ROBERTO TORRES, SINGER, MUSICIAN AND COMPOSER. “EL CAMINANTE” OR “CABALLO VIEJO”.
One of the great representatives of our music is Roberto Torres, known for his popular performances, by the name of “El Caminante” or “Caballo Viejo”. Roberto is a prominent singer, songwriter, musician, arranger, and producer, born in the town of Güines, Cuba, in 1940.
Since his adolescence, he was inclined towards music and made his first appearances as part of the Universal Ensemble of Malena del Sur and the Swing Casino Orchestra.
Following the Castro triumph in Cuba in 1959, he traveled to Miami and then to New York, where he settled permanently. There he joined the famous Broadway Charanga of the brothers Rudy, Kelvin, and Eddy Zervigon, with which he recorded eight albums. Roberto was also part of the José Antonio Fajardo orchestra.

In 1969 he joined the Sonora Matancera, with which he spent three years as a showgirl, but never had the opportunity to appear as a soloist. Tours of Sonora took him to Colombia in 1970.
DEVELOPMENT OF HIS ARTISTIC CAREER.
In 1972 he recorded with Mike Martínez’s Latin Dimension Orchestra. A year later, he began his solo career, recording high-quality LPs for the next seven years, including El Castigador, “De Nuevo”, “Roberto Torres y Sus Caminantes”, “Está En Buenas Manos”, and ” El Duro Del Guaguancó “. Also in this period is the album “Juntos”, with the great Cuban trumpeter Alfredo “Chocolate” Armenteros. All the albums were recorded under the Salsoul label.
In the album “El Castigador” a song entitled “El Caminante” was included, with arrangements by Louie Ramírez. This theme from which arose the nickname with which the great music teacher is usually known.

R.T. canta “El Paralitico”
In 1979, Torres founded the SAR Records label with Sergio Bofill and Adriano García (the acronym is made up of the first letter of each founder’s name). This fact is very important in Roberto’s musical life because with this label he produced and recorded an impressive number of albums, to the taste of all Latin music lovers in the world: Roberto did choirs, played the harpsichord, maracas and the güiro, and made the mix in many of them. The first musical work recorded with this his new label was called El Rey Del Montuno, which only had three songs: “Cuento Mi Vida”, “El Carretero” and “Cienfuegos”, but which managed to sell 30 thousand copies in Africa.
Roberto honors the music of his country and the great representatives of its musical folklore. He made recordings in his voice of previously recorded Cuban songs and made musical productions in honor of characters such as Beny More, El Trió Matamoros, Abelardo Barroso, and even the great Boricua composer Rafael Hernández. He also revived rhythms such as the guajira, the guaracha, the son, and the montuno.

THE POPULAR SALSA VALLENATA
Another of his great musical achievements was obtained in 1980 when he created the Charanga Vallenata. Torres mixed the Colombian rhythm called vallenato with Cuban music in the charanga format, achieving great success and recording several albums with new versions of Colombian rhythm songs. With the participation of the Colombian Humberto Corredor, Torres, he created a rhythm that some call “vallenato in salsa rhythm” or “salsa vallenata”, thus becoming the number one diffuser of this rhythm in Latin America.
There is an extensive list of successful songs recorded in the excellent voice of our honoree: “Para que aprendas”, “El duro del guaguancó”, “Nostalgia guajira”, “Mi son cubano”, “El carretero”, “El paralítico”, “OLD HORSE”, “The prisoner”, “The very, very”, “Linda guajira”, “Add some sauce” and “The one who sows his corn”.

Uno de los grandes representantes de nuestra música es Roberto Torres, conocido por sus populares interpretaciónes, con el nombre de “El Caminante” o “Caballo Viejo”. Roberto es un prominente cantante, compositor, músico, arreglista y productor, nacido en el pueblo de Güines, Cuba, en 1940.
Desde su adolescencia se inclinó por la música, e hizo sus primeras apariciones como parte del Conjunto Universal de Malena del Sur y de la Orquesta Swing Casino.
A raiz del triunfo castrista en Cuba en 1959 viajó a Miami y luego a Nueva York, donde se radicó definitivamente. Allí se vinculo a la famosa Charanga Broadway de los hermanos Rudy, Kelvin y Eddy Zervigon, con la que grabó ocho álbumes. Roberto también hizo parte de la orquesta de José Antonio Fajardo.

En 1969 se vinculó a la Sonora Matancera, con la que estuvo tres años como corista, pero no tuvo la oportunidad de aparecer nunca como solista. Las giras de la Sonora lo llevaron a Colombia en 1970.

En el álbum “El Castigador” fue incluido un tema titulado “El Caminante”, con arreglos de Louie Ramírez Dicho tema del que surgió el apodo con el que se suele conocer al gran maestro musical.
En 1979, Torres fundó el sello SAR Records con Sergio Bofill y Adriano García (la sigla está compuesta por la primera letra del nombre de cada fundador). Este hecho es muy importante en la vida musical de Roberto, pues con este sello produjo y grabó una cantidad impresionante de álbumes, del gusto de todos los amantes de la música latina en el mundo: Roberto hizo coros, tocó las claves, las maracas y el güiro y realizó la mezcla en muchos de ellos. El primer trabajo musical grabado con este su nuevo sello se llamó El Rey Del Montuno, el cual solo contó con tres temas: “Cuento Mi Vida”, “El Carretero” y “Cienfuegos”, pero que logró vender 30 mil copias en África.
Como buen cubano, Roberto hace honor a la música de su país y a los grandes representantes de su folclor musical. Hizo grabaciones en su voz de temas cubanos grabados anteriormente, y realizó producciones musicales en honor a personajes como Beny More, El Trió Matamoros, Abelardo Barroso e incluso al gran compositor Boricua Rafael Hernández. LA POPULAR SALSA VALLENATA
Otro de sus grandes logros musicales lo obtuvo en el año 1980, cuando creó la Charanga Vallenata. Torres mezcló el ritmo colombiano llamado vallenato con la música cubana del formato de charanga, alcanzando gran éxito y grabando varios álbumes con nuevas versiones de temas del ritmo colombiano. Con la participación del colombiano Humberto Corredor, Torres, creó un ritmo que algunos denominan “vallenato en ritmo de salsa” o “salsa vallenata”, con lo que se convirtió en el difusor número uno de este ritmo en Latinoamérica.
Existe una lista extensa de canciones exitosas grabadas en la excelente voz de nuestro homenajeado: “Para que aprendas”, “El duro del guaguancó”, “Nostalgia guajira”, “Mi son cubano”, “El carretero”, “El paralítico”, “CABALLO VIEJO”, “El presidario”, “La muy, muy”, “Linda guajira”, “Échale salsita” y “El que siembra su maíz”.
Con cinco décadas en la música Roberto Torres ha realizado una contribución muy importante a nuestra cultura y es por lo que queremos hacerle un homenaje por su valioso aporte como músico, cantante y productor musical, pues se trata de uno de los exponentes más sobresalientes de nuestra música.
