“THE THREE VILLALOBOS” A CUBAN SERIES THAT SPREAD OUTSIDE OUR BORDERS. PHOTOS
The adventures “Los tres Villalobos”, original by Cuban author Armando Couto, were born at RHC, Cadena Azul in 1943 and were consolidated in CMQ Radio in the 1950s. From here they spread outside the borders through the Short Wave frequencies, long before numerous stations made their own versions and broadcast them in more than a dozen countries in the Region.
When in the forties and fifties of the last century the public enjoyed, from the radio waves, the episodes of three brothers who faced the injustices committed against the peasantry in the neocolonial era, no one thought that these adventures enjoyed for more than 20 years of such resounding success. It was broadcast Monday through Friday.
This program was selected as the “best program” in the Cuban Cinematographic and Radio Yearbook, 17th, 1957 Annual Edition, published in Havana and which lists the most outstanding programs of 1956 and the personalities honored with special diplomas, according to the selection of the ACRYT.
BEGINNING OF THE FAMOUS SERIES “LOS TRES VILLALOBOS”
The series began in Cuba at the beginning of the 1940s, in the golden age of radio broadcasting on the island, from which Felix B. Caignet’s “The right to be born” is remembered, which in its culminating moment paralyzed all activities from that country. At that time, the large consortiums commissioned their own radio series and so it was that the makers of Sabatés soap, which were a subsidiary of the transnational “Procter and Gamble”, asked the writer Armando Couto for a radio series that would initially be broadcast on the RHC station, Cadena Azul. Later, with the co-sponsorship of “Chocolates La Gloria” and “Elsa Soap” from the Sabatés factory, he moved to the emblematic CMQ Radio station.
The Series was narrated and acted with extreme professionalism and like any series, it had its moments of suspense that were always resolved in the next chapter. In addition to the Tres Villalobos, there were other characters such as Emilio Capetillo, Cecilia or Sakiri (who apparently was Malay as he regularly evoked the proverbs of the land from him). Later, and to create new situations, the author introduced other characters to the island’s guerrilla movement: General Castrillón, Captain Armenteros, and a dark Gaucho Nevara. The fighting was somewhat anachronistic, with battalions on horseback … but they all loved it.
His popularity was such that in a chapter the news of Rodolfo’s death spread and in the end the two brothers go to look for him and find a coffin and when opening it, Machito shouted: Rodolfo! and there the chapter ended. That afternoon the entire town spoke of nothing other than Rodolfo’s death and many with contrite faces spoke of the terrible loss of Rodolfo Villalobos as if he were a relative or a citizen of the town. Of course, this was only a resource to create expectations for his followers, and the next day it turned out that it had only been confusion and Rodolfo was alive. Many people breathed easy.
LAS “POSTALITAS CUBANAS” AND CINEMATOGRAPHIC PRODUCTIONS
An album of “postalitas” was published, which responded to four of the adventures of the famous brothers: “La Venganza de Los Villalobos”, “Slaves of the Jungle”, “El Terror del Llano” and “Camino de Acero”. Each of the four adventures of Los Tres Villalobos used about twenty-five postcards in the development of their drama. In total the album had a hundred postcards. Still today, these postcards are of interest to collectors and fans of the series.
These vignettes were also welcomed in Mexico from June 27, 1977, on behalf of Editorial América, printed in MEXICO by PUBLICACIONES CONTINENTALES. The series drawn by the team headed by Miguel F. Callejas and with arguments from the author himself remained on sale until the early eighties when it was converted from a weekly magazine.
With the enthusiasm generated by the success throughout Latin America, the Mexican cinema shot in 1955 the film “Los tres Villalobos”, with Joaquín Cordero in the role of Miguelón, Raúl Luzardo as Rodolfo and Freddy Fernández as Machito; and to adorn the film, the beautiful Evangelina Elizondo was included in the cast.
They also made two film co-productions with Cuba, shot in 1956: “The justice of the Villalobos and” Here are the Villalobos. ” In both films, the protagonists were: Ramón Gay (Rodolfo), Raúl Martínez (Miguelón) and Nobel Vega (Machito), supported by a cast of Mexican actors and actresses. As a curious fact, Jesús Alvariño participated in it. The two were filmed at the same time in the province of Camagüey. With very few resources and using many images taken from North American movies and series.

It was undoubtedly this adventure radio program that captured the attention of children and young people for a long time. There was a musical refrain that said: “three were three / the three Villalobos / three were three / and none of them were silly.” I imagine some remember it because it even lasted beyond that time.
The characters were: Miguelón, Rodolfo and Machito Villalobos. On the radio the protagonists were: Rolando Leyva (Miguelón), Ernesto Galindo (Rodolfo) and Jesús Alvariño (Machito).

Las aventuras “Los tres Villalobos”, original del autor cubano Armando Couto, nacieron en RHC, Cadena Azul en 1943 y se consolidaron en CMQ Radio en la década del 50.
Desde aquí se extendieron fuera de fronteras por las frecuencias de Onda Corta, mucho antes de que numerosas emisoras realizaran sus propias versiones y las difundieran en más de una decena de países en la Región.
Cuando en las décadas del cuarenta y cincuenta del pasado siglo el público disfrutaba, desde las ondas radiales, los episodios de tres hermanos que enfrentaban las injusticias cometidas contra el campesinado en la época neocolonial, nadie pensó que estas aventuras gozaran durante mas de 20 años de tan rotundo éxito. Se transmitía de lunes a viernes.

LOS TRES VILLALOBOS, UNA ADAPTACION DE LA TV CUBANA.
Este programa fue seleccionado como “mejor programa” en el Anuario Cinematográfico y Radial Cubano, 17 a, Edición Anual 1957, publicado en La Habana y que relaciona los programas más destacados de 1956 y las personalidades homenajeadas con diplomas especiales, según la selección de la A. C. R. Y. T.
COMIENZO DE LA SERIE FAMOSA “LOS TRES VILLALOBOS”
La serie se inició en Cuba a inicios de los años cuarenta, en la época dorada de la radiodifusión en la isla, de donde se recuerda “El derecho de nacer”, de Felix B. Caignet, que en su momento culminante paralizó todas las actividades de ese país. En esos tiempos, los grandes consorcios se encargaban sus propias radioseries y así fue que los fabricantes del jabón Sabatés, que eran una subsidiaria de la transnacional “Procter and Gamble”, le solicitaron al escritor Armando Couto una serie radial que inicialmente se trasmitiría en la emisora RHC, Cadena Azul. Posteriormente con el copatrocinio del “Chocolates La Gloria” y el “Jabón Elsa” de la fábrica Sabatés, se trasladó a la emblemática emisora CMQ Radio.
La Serie era narrada y actuada con extremo profesionalismo y al igual que toda serie, tenía sus momentos de suspenso que siempre se resolvían en el siguiente capítulo. Además de los Tres Villalobos, estaban otros personajes como Emilio Capetillo, Cecilia o Sakiri (que al parecer era malayo pues regularmente evocaba los proverbios de su tierra). Mas tarde y para crear nuevas situaciones, el autor introdujo otros personajes al movimiento guerrillero de la isla :el General Castrillón, el Capitán Armenteros y un tenebroso Gaucho Nevara. La lucha era un tanto anacrónica, con batallones a caballo… pero a todos encantaba.
Era tal su popularidad que en un capitulo se corrió la noticia de la muerte de Rodolfo y al final los dos hermanos van a buscarlo y encuentran un ataúd y al abrirlo Machito gritaba: ¡Rodolfo! y ahí terminó el capítulo. Esa tarde todo el pueblo no habló de otra cosa que de la muerte de Rodolfo y muchos con el rostro compungido hablaban de la terrible pérdida de Rodolfo Villalobos, como si se tratara de un familiar o un paisano del pueblo. Por supuesto que esto solo fue un recurso para crear expectativas a sus seguidores y al día siguiente resultó que solo había sido una confusión y Rodolfo estaba vivo.
Mucha gente respiró tranquila.
“POSTALITAS CUBANAS” Y PRODUCCIONES CINEMATOGRAFICAS
Se editó un álbum de “postalitas”, que respondía a cuatro de las aventuras de los famosos hermanos: “La Venganza de los Villalobos”, “Esclavos de la Selva”, “El Terror del Llano” y “Camino de Acero”. Cada una de las cuatro aventuras de Los Tres Villalobos empleaba unas veinticinco postalitas en el desarrollo de su drama. En total el álbum tenía cien postalitas. Todavía hoy, estas postalitas son de interés de coleccionistas y fanáticos de la serie.
En México también se les dio la bienvenida a estas viñetas a partir del 27 de junio de 1977 por cuenta de la Editorial América, impresas en MÉXICO por PUBLICACIONES CONTINENTALES. La serie dibujada por el equipo encabezado por Miguel F. Callejas y con argumentos del propio autor se mantuvo en venta hasta principios de los años ochenta cuando se convirtió de una revista de aparición semanal.
Con el entusiasmo generado por el éxito en toda América Latina, el cine mexicano rodó en 1955 la película “Los tres Villalobos”, con Joaquín Cordero en el papel de Miguelón, Raúl Luzardo como Rodolfo y Freddy Fernández como Machito; y para adornar el film se incluyó en el reparto a la guapa Evangelina Elizondo.
También realizaron dos coproducciones cinematográficas con Cuba, rodadas en 1956 : “La justicia de los Villalobos y “Aquí están los Villalobos”. En ambas películas los protagonistas fueron: Ramón Gay (Rodolfo), Raúl Martínez (Miguelón) y Nobel Vega (Machito), secundados por un elenco de actores y actrices mexicanos. Como dato curioso participó en ella Jesús Alvariño. Las dos se filmaron a un mismo tiempo en la provincia de Camagüey. Con muy pocos recursos y utilizando muchas imágenes sacadas de películas y series norteamericanas.

Fue sin dudas este programa radial de aventuras el que acaparó la atención de los niños y jóvenes durante mucho tiempo. Había un estribillo musical que decía: “tres eran tres/ los tres Villalobos/ tres eran tres/ y ninguno era bobo”. Me imagino algunos lo recuerden, porque incluso perduró mas allá de esa época.
Los personajes eran: Miguelón, Rodolfo y Machito Villalobos. En la radio los protagonistas fueron: Rolando Leyva (Miguelón), Ernesto Galindo (Rodolfo) y Jesús Alvariño (Machito).
