Amaury Gutiérrez Brufau was born in Santa Clara, Cuba on September 9, 1963, he is a popular singer and composer.

His interest in music came to him since he was studying in high school, and his opportunity came when he responded to a call from the School of Art Instructors, an institution where he obtained a scholarship. Amaury Gutiérrez has a solid musical education from the Conservatory where he specialized in Choral Conducting, although he also studied piano and guitar.

Later, Amaury Gutiérrez moved to Havana and worked with the trumpeter Arturo Sandoval who was impressed by the Cappella work that the young composer was developing at that time. Shortly after, the group Afrocuba, a group that used to accompany Silvio Rodríguez, decides to hire a new singer and recruits Amaury. When he was in Cuba, he himself put music, without commercial pretensions but rather with a desire for personal gratification, to José Martí’s verses. With that group, he works two years.

After this experience, Amaury joins a multidisciplinary artistic group with which he tours various places, among which is Mexico, a country wherein in 1993 he settled permanently.

In the beginning, he was singing with different groups until he decided to do what he always wanted: to compose and sing his own songs. This inclination puts him in contact with other young Cuban singer-songwriters based in Mexico: Francisco Céspedes and David Torrens, with whom he has shared the stage since then, and with whom he later recorded duets for his self-titled debut album.

His first album Amaury Gutiérrez (1999) was nominated for a Latin Grammy and sold more than 600 thousand copies. He received the breakthrough artist award of the year by Premio Onda in Spain in 2000.

ARTISTIC CAREER

In his compositions, Amaury Gutiérrez places special emphasis on the vocal aspect, not only because of his academic past but also because of the particular feeling that he gives to his performances. His influences as a singer come from sources as diverse as Pablo Milanés, Andy Montañez, Djaván, Caetano Veloso, Rubén Blades, Stevie Wonder, Al Jarreau, and even Paul McCartney. In the creative process of composition, Amaury confesses that he has an easier time composing the music first and then developing the text, having the guitar as the main instrument. Amaury Gutiérrez’s creativity is nourished by various sources, one of them is literature, with authors such as Juan Rulfo, José Martí, Gabriel García Márquez, Nicolás Guillén.

Gutierrez defines his style as “Cuban Pop”, a mixture of various musical genres including the old and the Nueva Trova, a few twists of contemporary music, the authorial sense of the golden age of bolero, and even Mexican music.

In 2007, Amaury participated in the Mexican reality show TV Azteca, known as “Golden Disc”, led by José Luis Rodríguez “El Puma” and María Inés. Competition among several artists from different decades of music turned out to be winning the singer Beatriz Adriana.

In 2009 Gutierrez celebrated with a spectacular concert the 20th anniversary of his artistic career with production by Jossel Calveiro, Reinaldo “Pachy” Lopez, and Fernando “Teo “Calveiro, and where he was joined by guests such as Luis Enrique, Gema Corredera among others.

In 2011 he received a Latin Grammy.

In 2012 he participated as co-coach of the team Andrés Cepeda in the first edition of the talent show “The Voice Colombia”, giving his professional opinion of the contestants on that computer, where the winner will have a recording contract with Universal Studios-Los Angeles.

Activism
He has supported the dissident movement Yo No Coopero Con La Dictadura (Do Not Cooperate with the Dictatorship).

Amaury Gutiérrez Brufau nació en Santa Clara, Cuba el 9 de septiembre de 1963, es un popular cantante y compositor.

Su interés por la música le llegó desde que estaba estudiando en el bachillerato, y su oportunidad llegó cuando respondió a una llamada de la Escuela de Instructores de Arte, institución donde obtuvo una beca. Amaury Gutiérrez tiene una sólida formación musical en el Conservatorio donde se especializó en Dirección Coral, aunque también estudió piano y guitarra.

Posteriormente, Amaury Gutiérrez se trasladó a La Habana y trabajó con el trompetista Arturo Sandoval quien quedó impresionado por la obra de Cappella que el joven compositor estaba desarrollando en ese momento. Poco después, el grupo Afrocuba, grupo que acompañaba a Silvio Rodríguez, decide contratar un nuevo cantante y recluta a Amaury. Cuando estuvo en Cuba, él mismo puso música, sin pretensiones comerciales sino con ganas de gratificación personal, a los versos de José Martí. Con ese grupo, trabaja dos años.

Luego de esta experiencia, Amaury se une a un grupo artístico multidisciplinario con el que recorre diversos lugares, entre los que se encuentra México, país en el que en 1993 se instaló definitivamente.
