Él junto a Siro Rodríguez y Rafael Cueto integraron el más famoso de los tríos cubanos. Solamente en l928 grabaron diez discos con la famosa firma discográfica RCA Víctor. Es bueno recordar que los números que lo lanzaron a la fama fueron El que siembra su maíz y Olvido.
Nacido en Santiago de Cuba en l894, Miguel Matamoros falleció en 1971. De sus 77 años, dedicó más de cuatro décadas a deleitar no sólo a sus compatriotas, sino al mundo con sus imperecederas y hermosas creaciones.

De Miguel Matamoros, dijo el destacado musicólogo santiaguero José Julián Padilla Sánchez que “pudo expresar artísticamente un estilo cubano criollísimo, y a la vez tener una manera peculiar y personalísima de crear e interpretar su propia música”.
Y sobre el Trío, Padilla expresó: “La sonoridad característica del Trío Matamoros se debía a la voz y guitarra prima de su director que poseía una línea melódica instrumental con estilo punteado. Todo ello se enriquecía con la voz segunda de Siro de rico timbre Barítono y la guitarra de Cueto que se caracterizó por un rayado sumamente expresivo y un tumbao sui géneris, con lo cual se lograba una sugerente polirritmia”.
Miguel Matamoros aportó además, los “pasacalles guitarísticos” creados por él, que poseían un exuberante sabor criollo muy particular completado con la voz tercera de Cueto en los coros de los sones.
Al cumplirse 50 años de la desaparición física de Miguel Matamoros, aún el eco de las interpretaciones de Siro, Cueto y Miguel, su famoso trío, resuena en las más distantes plazas del planeta, para orgullo de los cubanos y de los amantes de nuestra música popular.
