Los Zafiros (The Sapphires) was a Cuban close-harmony vocal group working from 1961–1970. The group was part of the filín (feeling) movement, inspired by American doo-wop groups such as The Platters. Their music was a fusion of Cuban genres, such as the bolero, with doo-wop, ballads, R&B, calypso, Bossa Nova, and rock.
Los Zafiros were formed in Cayo Hueso, Havana in 1961, by Néstor Milí Bustillo, with the members: Leoncio Morúa (Kike); Miguel Cancio (Miguelito); Ignacio Elejalde, a counter-tenor, in the high register; Eduardo Elio Hernández (El Chino); Néstor Milí Bustillo, musical director and guitar.

Later, Manuel Galbán (guitar) became musical director, and at times Oscar Aguirre (guitar) substituted.
In 1987 another group formed as ‘Los Nuevos Zafiros’ that didn’t have the same popularity as the original Sapphires.

THE POPULAR GROUP DESINTEGRATED. WHERE ARE THEY?
The group was highly successful from the start, with high record sales and popular tours at home and abroad. However, some members of the group were self-destructive and undisciplined, with heavy drinking and other activities. Two died young: Ignacio died in 1981 at the age of 37 from a brain hemorrhage. Kike died in 1983 from cirrhosis of the liver. El Chino, beset by vision, speech, and drinking problems, lived alone in Cayo Hueso until his death on 8 August 1995 at age 56. Today only two members are alive, Manuel Galban and Miguel Cancio. Cancio lives in Miami.
Miguel, the only member of Los Zafiros to emigrate from Cuba, went to Miami in the early ’90s in order to be closer to his two children who’d left Cuba 11 years before. Cancio still proudly wears the sapphire ring that gave the group its name. Purchased from a drunken man outside CMQ Studios in 1957, it has become an indelible trademark of Los Zafiros and an important reminder of Cancio’s musical past.
Manuel Galbán and his wife still live in the same house in Havana as in the heyday. He is still active on the Cuban music scene through his work in the Buena Vista Social Club and as a recording artist for World Circuit records. In 2001, World Circuit arranged a special recording session for Galbán and Cancio at EGREM. Along with Orlando Lopez (Cachaito), Roberto Garcia, and Bernardo Garcia (Chori), Cancio and Galbán recorded two of their old songs. This session plays a central role in the film and marks the first time that Galbán and Cancio recorded together in over thirty years.
The song, “He Venido,” sung by, recently in 2011 took the spotlight as a featured musical theme in the AMC television series Breaking Bad. The central scene from Episode 306 contains footage filmed in a scrap hauler’s yard of the destruction by compacting of the Recreational Vehicle (RV) used by Walt and Jesse to cook their initial batches of meth. Wildly successful with their “cook,” the scene poignantly chronicles the demise of a central character, i.e. the RV, while filmed to the soulful and romantic lament of the 1961 hit by Los Zafiros, who ironically were also victims to premature demise from toxic feelings associated with the self-destructive forces of chemical dependency.

El grupo tuvo un gran éxito desde el principio, con un récord de ventas y giras populares en el país y en el extranjero. Sin embargo, algunos miembros del grupo eran autodestructivos e indisciplinados, bebían en exceso y realizaban otras actividades. Dos murieron jóvenes: Ignacio murió en 1981 a los 37 años de una hemorragia cerebral. Kike murió en 1983 de cirrosis hepática. El Chino, acosado por problemas de visión, habla y bebida, vivió solo en Cayo Hueso hasta su muerte el 8 de agosto de 1995 a la edad de 56 años. Hoy en día sólo viven dos miembros, Manuel Galban y Miguel Cancio. Cancio vive en Miami.
Miguel, el único miembro de Los Zafiros que emigró de Cuba, fue a Miami a principios de los 90 para estar más cerca de sus dos hijos que habían salido de Cuba 11 años antes. Cancio todavía luce con orgullo el anillo de zafiro que le dio su nombre al grupo. Comprado a un borracho en las afueras de CMQ Studios en 1957, se ha convertido en una marca indeleble de Los Zafiros y un recordatorio importante del pasado musical de Cancio.

Manuel Galbán y su esposa aún viven en la misma casa en La Habana que en el apogeo. Sigue activo en la escena musical cubana a través de su trabajo en el Buena Vista Social Club y como artista de grabación de World Circuit Records. En 2001, World Circuit organizó una sesión especial de grabación para Galbán y Cancio en EGREM. Junto a Orlando López (Cachaito), Roberto García y Bernardo García (Chori), Cancio y Galbán grabaron dos de sus viejas canciones. Esta sesión juega un papel central en la película y marca la primera vez que Galbán y Cancio graban juntos en más de treinta años.
La canción, “He Venido”, cantada por, recientemente en 2011 tomó el centro de atención como un tema musical destacado en la serie de televisión de AMC Breaking Bad.
