NIQUERO, CUBA: WHERE THE WESTERNMOST POINT OF CUBA’S ORIENTAL PROVINCES IS LOCATED.
Niquero is a municipality and town in the Granma Province of Cuba. It is located in the coastal region of the province, bordering the Gulf of Guacanayabo. Cape Cruz (Cabo Cruz), the westernmost point of the province is located in this municipality.
Located on the coast of the province of Granma, Niquero is a city relevant because of its history and nature, as well as due to the archeological findings in the area.
The roads have improved in the last decades and nowadays the area is well communicated, mostly if we bear in mind that in the past its access was only via the sea. The trails were so badly preserved that the inhabitants only moved by horse.
There, you’ll find numerous spots of interest related both to the present and ancient history of the place, Desembarco del Granma National Monument, Alegría de Pío, and the Obelisk erected to honor the Mambí (Cuban fighters) collapsed on October 15th, 1897.
Moreover, you can visit the renowned Niquero Carnival, being celebrated since 1950, and developed with a parade with numerous carriages accompanying coloring troupes, with live music during all the night, and the presence of orchestras from all the parts of the country. During this celebration, several parts of the city get ready for the sales of food, drinks, and toys, so it is a good spot to taste the typical regional cuisine. The Niquero Carnival is a cheerful way to discover more about the inhabitants of the city, joining them in their traditions and recreational activities.

The municipality is divided into the barrios of Belic, Guanito, Jagua, La Marea, El Plátano, Sevilla Abajo, Cabo Cruz, Hondón, Marea de Belic, Alegría de Pío, Estacadero, La Ricardo, etc. Niquero is also the southernmost municipality in all of Cuba.

TRANSPORT
The town is crossed by the state highway “Circuito Sur de Oriente” (CSO). Cape Cruz has a lighthouse named Faro Vargas.
CULTURE
Cultura has been developed in a relevant way in the town, where you’ll find a library, the house of culture with several cultural activities and a museum. The visit to the Casa del Farero en Cabo Cruz, declared Municipal Monument, is a nice stroll.
In Niquero is located an important Chess Academy to which relevant chess players like Carlos Figueredo Pérez, Deisis Rodríguez Rosell and Sandra Rodríguez Rosell among others have belonged. It opened its current headquarters in 2005, where frequently national tournaments take place.

Niquero es un municipio y localidad de la provincia de Granma de Cuba. Se ubica en la región costera de la provincia, bordeando el Golfo de Guacanayabo. En este municipio se ubica Cabo Cruz (Cabo Cruz), el punto más occidental de la provincia.

Además, se puede visitar el reconocido Carnaval de Niquero, que se celebra desde 1950, y que se desarrolla con un desfile con numerosos carruajes que acompañan a las comparsas de colores, con música en vivo durante toda la noche y la presencia de orquestas de todos los puntos del país. Durante esta celebración, varios puntos de la ciudad se preparan para la venta de alimentos, bebidas y juguetes, por lo que es un buen lugar para degustar la cocina típica regional. El Carnaval de Niquero es una forma alegre de conocer más a los habitantes de la ciudad, uniéndolos en sus tradiciones y actividades recreativas.
