THE PEDRAPLÉN DE CAIBARIEN TO THE CAYO SANTA MARÍA, CUBA: CONSIDERED THE LONGEST CALZADA IN THE WORLD.
Driving through what has been considered the longest road in the world is an incredible experience, going from Caibarién to Cayo Santa María, Cuba, in the north of the province of Villa Clara, about 48 kilometers, through which you will have the feeling of driving on the sea.
Considered the largest causeway in the world and through it is possible to directly access kilometers of beaches, including Playa Las Brujas, Playa Ensenachos, Playa Las Salinas, Playa Perla Blanca, Playa Santa María, and Playa Mégano. In the vicinity of El Pedraplén you will find exuberant vegetation while allowing access to small islets such as Cobos, Fragoso, Majá, Francés, Las Picúas and Español de Adentro.
From this, it is said that if the amount of trips that were necessary to be able to move the stones through about 48 kilometers of the sea is put together, it could well go around the world about 650 times. This Causeway was conceived with the objective of promoting tourist sites in Cuba for foreign visitors.
PREPARATION OF THE ENGINEERING WORK
To undertake such a project, 68 dump trucks were necessary; as well as front dozers, compressors, and loaders. However, a series of obstacles that occurred during the construction of the Pedraplén led to an extension of the planned time for its construction, which was 5 years, due to the drastic reduction of resources, specifically fuel, and was completed after 10 years.
It was carried out in a net time of 7 years of continuous work but with prolonged interruptions and other material factors that caused a delay of two years at a total cost of 34 million dollars.
The work is built in such a way as to avoid that the waves of 2 or 3 meters can exceed the stones, such as those caused by the hurricanes that hit the island in 2008 with winds of more than 220 kilometers per hour.
Its culmination was at 10 years old, but it was carried out in 7 years of continuous work. In order not to affect the flora and fauna of the area, it was avoided to place rocks in the mangroves and 45 pre-assembled concrete bridges were built, which were set up with in-situ concrete, combining them with prefabricated parts.
One of the elements that stand out in the work is the bridge over the Canal de Los Barcos, the largest in Cuba with 350 meters long crossing the sea.
Pedraplén Caibarién to Cayo Santa María obtained the “Puente de Alcántara International Award” in the VII Edition (1998-2000), which is awarded as recognition to the work that has, according to the jury, the greatest cultural importance, aesthetic, functional, and social, highlighting the technical quality and perfection during the execution of the project.
The Prize is awarded jointly with the work “Expansion of the Madrid Metro network” (Spain) and the Ibero-American Mention to “Pedraplén Caibarién to Cayo Santa María” (Cuba).

Considerada la calzada más grande del mundo y a través de ella es posible acceder directamente a kilómetros de playas entre las que se encuentran Playa Las Brujas, Playa Ensenachos, Playa Las Salinas, Playa Perla Blanca, Playa Santa María y Playa Mégano. En las cercanías de El Pedraplén encontrarás una vegetación exuberante al tiempo que permite el acceso a pequeños islotes como Cobos, Fragoso, Majá, Francés, Las Picúas y Español de Adentro.
De esta, se dice que si se junta la cantidad de viajes que se hicieron necesarios para poder trasladar la piedras a través de unos 48 kilómetros de mar, bien se podría dar la vuelta al mundo unas 650 veces. Esta Calzada se concibió con el objetivo de potenciar en Cuba sitios turísticos para los visitantes foráneos.
PREPARACION DE LA OBRA DE INGENIERIA
Para acometer tal proyecto se hicieron necesarios 68 camiones de volteo; así como topadores frontales, compresores y cargadores. No obstante, una serie de trabas ocurridas durante la construcción del Pedraplén trajo consigo que se alargara el tiempo planificado para su construcción que era de 5 años, por la reducción drástica de los recursos, específicamente el combustible, y se culminó al cabo de los 10.
Se realizó en un tiempo neto de 7 años de trabajos continuos pero con interrupciones prolongadas y otros factores materiales que ocasionaron un atraso de dos años con un costo total de 34 millones de dólares.
La obra se encuentra construida de tal manera que evita que las olas de 2 o 3 metros puedan sobrepasar las piedras, como las que se originan por los huracanes que azotaron la isla en el año 2008 con vientos de más de 220 kilómetros por hora.
Su culminación fue a los 10 años, pero se realizó en 7 años de trabajos continuos. Para que no se afectara la flora y la fauna de la zona, se evitó colocar rocas en los manglares y se construyeron 45 puentes de hormigón premontados, los cuales fueron puestos en pie con hormigón insitu, combinándose con partes prefabricadas.
Uno de los elementos que sobresale de la obra es el puente sobre el Canal de los Barcos, el mayor de Cuba con 350 metros de largo atravesando el mar.
El Pedraplén Caibarién al Cayo Santa María obtuvo el “Premio Internacional Puente de Alcántara” en la VII Edición (1998-2000), el cual se otorga a modo de reconocimiento a la obra que posea, de acuerdo al jurado, la mayor importancia cultural, estética, funcional y social, destacando la calidad técnica y la perfección durante la ejecución del proyecto.
El Premio se otorga compartido con la obra «Ampliación de la red del Metro de Madrid» (España) y la Mención Iberoamericana al «Pedraplén Caibarién a Cayo Santa María» (Cuba).
