Miami Sound Machine was formed in 1975 as the Miami Latin Boys, by keyboardist Emilio Estefan, Jr. Performing at a wedding shortly afterward, the group was joined by guest vocalists Gloria Fajardo and her cousin, Merci Navarro Murciano. The two singers impressed the band so much that they were invited to become members, and with their acceptance, the band was renamed ‘Miami Sound Machine.

After recording four all-Spanish albums released by CBS Discos, Miami Sound Machine broke through to a much larger audience with their first English album, ‘Eyes of Innocence’, in 1984. The album included the dance hit single “Dr. Beat.” Their next album, 1986’s Primitive Love, included the tune “Conga!,” which became the first single to be simultaneously included on Billboard’s pop, Latin, soul, and dance charts. Two other singles, “Bad Boy” and “Words Get in the Way,” joined “Conga!” in the pop Top Ten that year, while several singles approached number one during 1987-88, all of which — “1-2-3,” “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” “Anything for You,” “Can’t Stay Away From You” — featured emerging star and lead vocalist Gloria Estefan with top billing.
GLORIA ESTEFAN TRAGIC ACCIDENT
Miami Sound Machine and Estefan were at their commercial peak when a semi-truck slammed into the back of their stopped tour bus on March 20, 1990. Estefan’s back was so severely broken that her surgery required 400 stitches, and two titanium rods were placed along both sides of her spine. The setback inspired a new direction for Estefan and Miami Sound Machine. After a year-long hiatus, the group returned to the stage with a renewed enthusiasm for traditional Latin music.
Their comeback album, ‘Mi Tierra’, featuring original tunes based on Cuban music of the ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s, received a Grammy award as “best tropical Latin album of 1993.” Its success was followed by the Grammy-winning album, Abriendo Puertas, two years later.
The personnel of Miami Sound Machine shifted considerably during their time together; Murciano left in 1982 and original guitarist Wesley B. Wright and bassist Juan Marcos Avila left three years later. Estefan Jr. retired from active performing and serves as the group’s manager, producer, and songwriter.
PERSONAL LIFE
Estefan became romantically involved with the Miami Sound Machine’s lead singer Gloria Fajardo in 1976. They married on September 2, 1978, and have a son, Nayib (born September 2, 1980), and a daughter, Emily (born December 5, 1994). The family lives on Star Island.
Emily is a recording artist. Nayib is an aspiring filmmaker and owner of the Nite Owl Theater in Miami. On June 5, 2010, Nayib married Lara Diamante Coppola in the backyard of his parents’ house. On June 21, 2012, the first Estefan grandchild was born: grandson Sasha Argento Coppola Estefan. Gloria Estefan has said that “Sasha Argento,” which means “benefactor of mankind” in Arabic, was a possible name that she and Emilio thought about naming their son Nayib.
ESTEFAN’S SUCCESSFUL CAREER
After a successful career, in 1994, Estefan was awarded the El Premio Billboard award for his work in the Latin music industry. In the same year, he was given the Excellence Award at the 1994 Lo Nuestro Awards. At the Latin Grammy Awards of 2000, Estefan received the award for Producer of the Year for his work on the albums ‘Ciego de Amor’ by Charlie Zaa, ‘El Amor de Mi Tierra’ by Carlos Vives, and the song “Da la Vuelta” by Marc Anthony and was recognized as the first Person of the Year by the Latin Recording Academy.
In 2002, he was appointed to the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities by President George W. Bush. In 2005, Estefan received the BMI “Songwriter of the Year” award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Estefan has received honorary doctoral degrees from Barry University, the University of Miami, Florida International University, and the Berklee College of Music. He also received the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award by the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2009.
Estefan was inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014. In November 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Estefan and his wife Gloria with the nation’s highest civilian honor—the Presidential Medal of Freedom. They were also awarded Lo Nuestro Excellence Award in 2018 and the Gershwin Prize in 2019 from the Library of Congress.
