LA ADMINISTRACIÓN de Joe Biden está preocupada por el deterioro de los derechos humanos en Cuba, dijo Juan González, director para el Hemisferio Occidental del Consejo de Seguridad Nacional de Estados Unidos, a la cadena CNN. Washington continúa revisando su política hacia La Habana como hizo con Corea del Norte, afirmó por su parte el secretario de Estado, Antony Blinken.
“Hemos visto un deterioro en la situación de los derechos humanos en Cuba. Eso ha sido una gran preocupación del presidente. La situación de los derechos humanos en Cuba no ha mejorado desde 2015 y hoy la situación en el hemisferio y en el mundo es muy diferente en cuanto a los retos que estamos tratando de combatir”, dijo González.
El funcionario añadió que Biden tiene un “fuerte argumento humanitario” para quitar los límites a las remesas y a los viajes de los cubanoamericanos y otros ciudadanos a Cuba, así como, para restaurar el servicio consular en La Habana. “Es nuestro interés unilateral hacerlo y el presidente pidió hacer una revisión total de la política hacia Cuba”, dijo.
“Los mejores embajadores son los cubanoamericanos y esos vínculos directos entre el pueblo americano y el pueblo cubano son lo necesario hacia el cambio. Tenemos que tener conversaciones serias, pero tendremos que hablar con los cubanos en algún momento y apenas terminemos esa decisión, tomaremos decisiones al respecto”, agregó.
SEIS MESES DE GOBIERNO BIDEN EN EEUU
Por su parte, el secretario de Estado, Antony Blinken, dijo en una entrevista con la cadena pública italiana RAI que Biden lleva poco tiempo en la Casa Blanca. “Solo hay ciertas cosas que se pueden hacer en seis meses”, señaló tras enumerar una parte de la agenda internacional del presidente de EEUU.
“Una de las cosas que estamos analizando con mucha atención en este momento es la política hacia Cuba. Está en revisión. Como una cuestión de principio básico, cualquier política que sigamos tendrá la democracia y los derechos humanos en su centro. Queremos asegurarnos de que estamos haciendo todo lo posible para empoderar al pueblo cubano para que decida su propio futuro”, afirmó Blinken.
La periodista italiana Lucia Duraccio dijo a Blinken que “los derechos humanos también son importantes en lo que respecta a Cuba, pero ustedes hablan con Arabia Saudita, con Turquía. ¿Quizás el diálogo es necesario para mejorar las condiciones de la gente, del pueblo cubano?”
Blinken respondió que “nunca nos hemos resistido al diálogo en ninguna parte. La pregunta es: ¿Cuál es la política general? Y eso es lo que estamos revisando. Lo hemos hecho en varias áreas. Pasamos algunos meses revisando nuestra política hacia Corea del Norte, por ejemplo, y anunciamos esa política hace apenas unas semanas. Estamos haciendo lo mismo con Cuba”.
Según Blinken, la agenda de Biden tenía otras prioridades en el ámbito internacional antes que las relaciones entre EEUU y Cuba, por ejemplo, “revitalizar nuestras relaciones con nuestros socios y aliados, volviendo a participar en instituciones multilaterales, volviendo a unirse al Acuerdo Climático de París, volviendo a comprometerse con la Organización Mundial de la Salud y convocando una cumbre de líderes sobre el clima”, dijo.
El Gobierno de Cuba lleva meses intentando que Joe Biden retome el camino de Barack Obama con La Habana, el llamado “deshielo”. Sin embargo, desde Washington dejaron claro que “Biden no es Obama en la política hacia Cuba”.
