Music runs through our veins. Cuba is rhythm, flavor, the strength of the drum, and the cradle of great Cuban singers.
That is why there are many who come to this country to know from the inside the authenticity and the genuineness of our son, mambo, cha-cha, habanera, danzón, conga, salsa, and even the popular reggaeton.
And since Cubans are cultural miscegenation, our music is the result of that mixed flavor: a “pulsating folklore”, as our Alejo Carpentier says.

WHERE OUR MUSICIANS COME FROM
Our music emanates from the land, from the most intrinsic eastern bateyes to the most urban solar habaneros. And as a key part are our musicians who come from there, “from below.”
Cafes, bars, squares, downloads at friends’ houses, all had the presence of singers. So, yes, our musicians are “from the hill and sing on the plain”, they are from here and there, they are from where the earth is warmer and they take their music anywhere in the world.
They knew how to adapt European, African, North American rhythms, etc., to their own style. But Cuban music reinvents itself while drinking from tradition. And in that same fusion lies the authenticity of Cuban rhythms.
These pages are not enough to mention all the Cuban singers. It is estimated that there are currently more than 12,000 professional musicians. And that figure does not include fans. It seems uncertain that an island produced so many artists …
1. BENNY MORÉ (1919-1963): THE BARBARIAN OF RHYTHM
The icon, one of the coolest Cuban voices, the king of nightlife: our Benny. He is, without a doubt, one of the best Cuban singers. In it we find a unique mix that ranges from peasant guateque to Afro music.
At the same time, Benny is a synthesis of cabaret, download, show, of that contagious music that encourages you to “enjoy.” A peasant who came to conquer Havana with only a guitar and knowledge of the street school. A great one, like his famous Giant Band, that’s Benny.
He was a “musician, poet, and madman”, as we say in Cuba to refer to those versatile artists of the stature of Benny. He ranged from composition, conducting, and arrangements to singing.
Not in vain did they take his life and musical career to the cinema with El Benny. This has been one of the most awarded Cuban films in national and international festivals and a candidate for the 2007 Oscar.
We even have Benny’s emblematic corner, the small Ali Bar cabaret. Located in the San Miguel del Padrón municipality, it witnessed nights of delight with the barbarian with the hat and cane.

2. SINDO GARAY (1867-1968): THE PHARAOH OF CUBA
Antonio Gumersindo Garay, our Sindo Garay, is one of those Cuban singers who deserves mention in this brief compendium of great musicians of our land. Always with a guitar in his hands, that faithful image of a troubadour is also that of Sindo. They say that he held his guitar until his last days.
A century of life he witnessed the composition of almost 600 songs. Singer of the Cuban landscape, of our land and our women, in his lyrics we find one of the best musical representations of our Cuba.
At the same time, renowned artists of the stature of Federico García Lorca, Silvio Rodríguez, and Ernesto Lecuona recognized the artistic value of this exponent of our music.

3. MIGUEL MATAMOROS (1894-1971): ONE OF THE CUBAN MUSIC GLORIES
Oriental sounds and troubadour lyrics, a perfect fusion that comes from the voice of Miguel Matamoros. He was the founder of the legendary Trío Matamoros, also composed of Rafael Cueto and Siro Rodríguez.
Together they raised the bolero-son and son montuno and achieved great popularity not only on the island, but also internationally.
Icons of Cuban song writing such as Lágrimas Negras and Mamá, son de la Loma are due to the mythical and genuine Trío Matamoros. And it is that the “son Matamorino” has left its mark as a symbol of the Cuban, of the most indigenous of our land.
Hardly a Cuban of the time, and of later generations as well, has not hummed his well-known songs. That has left us Matamoros, an undeniable legacy of music that does not respond to fashions, that was heard in the 30s and that lasted for decades.
It is impossible to talk about Cuban singers without mentioning Miguel Matamoros. Other of his main songs were:

DE DONDE VIENEN NUESTROS MUSICOS
Nuestra música emana de la tierra, desde los más intrínsecos bateyes orientales hasta los más urbanos solares habaneros. Y como parte clave se encuentran nuestros músicos que vienen desde allí, «desde abajo».
Los cafés, bares, plazas, descargas en casa de amigos, todos contaban con la presencia de los cantantes. Entonces, sí, nuestros músicos son «de la loma y cantan en el llano», son de aquí y de allá, son de donde la tierra es más caliente y llevan su música hasta cualquier lugar del mundo.
Ellos supieron adaptar los ritmos europeos, africanos, norteamericanos, etc., a un estilo propio. Pero la música cubana se reinventa a la par que bebe de la tradición. Y en esa misma fusión radica la autenticidad de los ritmos cubanos.
No alcanzan estas páginas para mencionar todos los cantantes cubanos. Se estima que actualmente existen más de 12 000 músicos profesionales. Y en esa cifra no se incluyen los aficionados. Pareciera incierto que una isla produjera tantos artistas…
1. BENNY MORÉ (1919-1963): EL BARBARO DEL RITMO
El ícono, una de las más geniales voces cubanas, el rey de la vida nocturna: nuestro Benny. Es, sin duda, uno de los mejores cantantes cubanos. En él encontramos una mezcla única que va desde el guateque campesino hasta la música afro.
Al mismo tiempo, Benny es síntesis de cabaret, descarga, espectáculo, de esa música contagiosa que te incita «a gozar». Un guajiro que llegó a conquistar La Habana con solo una guitarra y conocimientos de la escuela de la calle. Un grande, como su conocida Banda Gigante, ese es Benny.
Fue «músico, poeta y loco», como decimos en Cuba para referirnos a esos artistas polifacéticos de la talla del Benny. Abarcó desde la composición, dirección de orquesta y arreglos hasta el canto.
No en vano llevaron al cine su vida y carrera musical con El Benny. Esta ha sido una de las películas cubanas más galardonadas en festivales nacionales e internacionales y candidata al Oscar 2007.
Incluso contamos con el rincón emblemático del Benny, el pequeño cabaret Ali Bar. Ubicado en el municipio San Miguel del Padrón, fue testigo de noches de deleite con el bárbaro de sombrero y bastón.

Antonio Gumersindo Garay, nuestro Sindo Garay, es uno de esos cantantes cubanos de merecida mención en este breve compendio de grandes músicos de nuestra tierra. Siempre con una guitarra en sus manos, esa fiel imagen de un trovador, es también la de Sindo. Cuentan que sostuvo su guitarra hasta sus últimos días.
Un siglo de vida fue testigo de la composición de casi 600 canciones. Cantante del paisaje cubano, de nuestra tierra y nuestras mujeres, en sus letras encontramos una de las mejores representaciones musicales de nuestra cubanía.
Al mismo tiempo, reconocidos artistas de la talla de Federico García Lorca, Silvio Rodríguez y Ernesto Lecuona reconocieron el valor artístico de este exponente de nuestra música.

Sones orientales y lírica trovadoresca, fusión perfecta que llega de la voz de Miguel Matamoros. Fue el fundador del legendario Trío Matamoros, integrado, además, por Rafael Cueto y Siro Rodríguez.
Juntos pusieron en alto el bolero-son y el son montuno y alcanzaron gran popularidad no solo en la Isla, sino también a nivel internacional.
Íconos de la cancionística cubana como Lágrimas Negras y Mamá, son de la Loma se le deben al mítico y genuino Trío Matamoros. Y es que el «son matamorino» ha dejado su impronta como símbolo de lo cubano, de lo más autóctono de nuestra tierra.
Difícilmente un cubano de la época, y de generaciones posteriores también, no haya tarareado sus conocidísimas canciones. Eso nos ha dejado Matamoros, un legado innegable de música que no responde a modas, que se escuchó en los años 30 y que duró por décadas.
