THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT CONDEMNS THE POLITICAL SITUATION AND VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN CUBA.
The European Parliament approved this Thursday by 386 votes in favor, 286 against, and 59 abstentions a harsh resolution condemning the political situation and Human Rights in Cuba.
The European Parliament, also known as Europarliament, Eurocamara, or European Chamber, is the parliamentary institution that in the European Union directly represents the citizens of the Union and that together with the European Commission and the Council of the European Union exercises the legislative function. Described as one of the most powerful legislative bodies in the world.
The text, debated on Wednesday, and objected to by the High Representative of European diplomacy Josep Borrell, is extremely critical of the repression on the island and ensures that the Dialogue Agreement signed between the Twenty-seven and Havana has been violated by the government Cuban.
The deputies who promoted the document also mention the popular slogan “Homeland and Life” and the repression against the San Isidro Movement and its supporters, Maykel Osorbo, Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, and Denis Solís González, persecuted and imprisoned, even for peacefully raising a poster in public.
The resolution regrets the growing number of political prisoners and convicts on the island, many due to pre-criminal social danger; calls for the repeal of recent Decrees 349 and 370 that “violate freedom of expression” and demands guarantees of a fair trial for activists and dissidents.
The text of the motion also condemns the conditions of slavery to which Cuban doctors are subjected in their missions abroad and calls for political reforms on the island that lead to fair and democratic elections.
The European Parliament also asked that Cuban civil society be adequately represented in future dialogues with the Cuban government.
At least a dozen deputies from the socialist caucus joined the resolution, whose triumph was celebrated on Twitter by the vice president of the European Parliament, the Czech Dita Charanzová, one of its main promoters.
RESPONSE TO THE HARD CONDEMNATION OF THE ISLAND GOVERNMENT
According to the Cuban government, MEPs are “obsessed” with destroying the revolution and “have a demonstrated link with organizations based in Miami financed by the US government.”
The official Cuban press had described the parliamentary initiative as a “maneuver” and a “farce” and celebrated that in the debate session on Wednesday “irrefutable arguments” in favor of the Castro government prevailed over the “calumnies and defamations of a small group” of MEPs whom he accused of “responding to Washington’s interests.” In a statement, the Cuban Foreign Ministry charged hard against the European People’s Party (EPP) and the liberals for promoting the debate.
In another, the Cuban National Assembly criticized MEPs for trying to pass a resolution “distorting reality” and “desperately trying to break the ties that unite Cuba and the European Union.”

El Parlamento Europeo aprobó este jueves por 386 votos a favor, 286 en contra y 59 abstenciones una dura resolución de condena a a la situación política y de Derechos Humanos en Cuba.
El Parlamento Europeo, también conocido como Europarlamento, Eurocámara, o Cámara Europea, es la institución parlamentaria que en la Unión Europea representa directamente a los ciudadanos de la Unión y que junto con la Comisión Europea y el Consejo de la Unión Europea ejerce la función legislativa. Descrito como uno de los cuerpos legislativos más poderosos del mundo.
El texto, debatido el miércoles, y objetado por el Alto Representante de la diplomacia europea Josep Borrell, es sumamente crítico con la represión en la isla, y asegura que el Acuerdo de Diálogo suscrito entre los Veintisiete y La Habana ha sido violado por el gobierno cubano.
Los diputados que promovieron el documento también mencionan el popular lema “Patria y Vida” y la represión contra el Movimiento San Isidro y sus simpatizantes, Maykel Osorbo, Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara y Denis Solís González, perseguidos y encarcelados, incluso por alzar de manera pacífica un cartel en público.
La resolución lamenta el creciente número presos y condenados políticos en la isla, muchos por peligrosidad social pre-delictiva; pide la derogación de los recientes Decretos 349 y 370 que “violan la libertad de expresión” y reclama garantías a un juicio justo para activistas y disidentes.
El texto de la moción también condena las condiciones de esclavitud a las que están sometidos los médicos cubanos en sus misiones en el exterior y pide reformas políticas en la isla que conduzcan a unas elecciones justas y democráticas.
La Eurocámara también pidió que la sociedad civil cubana esté representada adecuadamente en futuros diálogos con el gobierno cubano.
Al menos una docena de diputados de la bancada socialista se sumaron a la resolución, cuyo triunfo fue celebrado en Twitter por la vicepresidenta del Parlamento Europeo, la checa Dita Charanzová, una de sus principales impulsoras.
RESPUESTA A LA DURA CONDENA AL GOBIERNO DE LA ISLA
Según el Gobierno Cubano, los eurodiputados están “obsesionados” con destruir la revolución y “tienen un vínculo demostrado con organizaciones radicadas en Miami financiadas por el gobierno de EE.UU.”.
La prensa oficialista cubana había calificado de “maniobra” y “farsa” la iniciativa parlamentaria y celebrado que en la sesión de debate del miércoles “primaron los argumentos irrefutables” a favor del gobierno castrista sobre las “calumnias y difamaciones de un reducido grupo” de eurodiputados a los que acusó de “responder a los intereses de Washington”. En un comunicado, el Ministerio de Exteriores cubano cargó duramente contra el Partido Popular Europeo (PPE) y los liberales por promover el debate.
En otro, la Asamblea Nacional de Cuba criticó que los eurodiputados pretendieran aprobar una resolución “tergiversando la realidad” y “tratando desesperadamente de quebrar los vínculos que unen a Cuba y la Unión Europea”.
