The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine has been around for over four decades, but the ‘Yellow Submarine’ we are dealing with here is a Cuban bar located on 17 Street & 6th in the Vedado neighborhood of Havana.
The Bar, El Submarino Amarillo (The Yellow Submarine) is a tribute to the song by the innovative British group that, 40 years after the band dissolved, still has many fans in Cuba and the world. The submarine theme is continued throughout the club, from the prevailing colors of yellow and blue to the many details like hatches and tubular shapes typical of subs.
The hair and accents were wrong, but the audience just cares about one thing: the house band was singing the Beatles, here, in the Cuban bar, where such an act might have led to arrests in the mid-1960s and punishments in 1970, 1980, and 1990s.

The décor is pop art, and many of the walls are decorated with verses from Beatle’s songs, including “Help, Strawberry Fields Forever,” and “While My Guitar Weeps.” Photographs from the early days of the Beatles, and album covers are also on display in the Yellow Submarine.

The bar is located across the street from the park with the sculpture of John Lennon by Cuban artist Villa Soberon. The bar was opened in 2011 in the space that once housed the Club Atelier, and was designed by Elizabeth Rojas Monzon, Maikel Sanchez Cal, and Rafael Mateu Dorado. The theme of the bar was chosen by mutual consent, with the hope that the song’s inspirational theme of friendship and joy would inspire the bar’s guests.
The Cuba “Yellow Submarine” bar usually showcases Cuban artists who interpret Beatle’s songs, as well as other bands from the ’60s and ’70s like Queen, Deep Purple, and The Rolling Stones.
Many Cubans still recall having to sneak a listen to whatever Beatles album they could find in the wake of the Cuban missile crisis and the American trade embargo. Festivals like Woodstock and even smaller rock concerts hardly ever occurred — all of which help explain the appeal of the Yellow Submarine.
Today’s Cuba, after all, is still a country of limited media. Just a few channels can be found on television. The Internet runs on dial-up. And while music is seemingly everywhere, including clubs and bars, most of it falls within a narrow spectrum between Trova ballads and rump-shaking reggaetón.

A few months ago, on a recent Saturday, the line of dozens of fans snaking to the corner looked like it was heading to college graduation. Only two groups seemed to be represented: baby boomers (wearing nice dresses and slacks) and twenty-something hipsters (in jeans and tight T-shirts). In a few cases, they had arrived together — mothers and daughters included — and each generation had its own reason for coming.
Older fans said the Yellow Submarine let them enjoy a moment that they should have experienced decades ago. “You don’t understand,” Marisa Valdes, 60, said as she danced with her husband, after taking pictures with wood cutouts of John, Paul, George, and Ringo. “This music, it used to be banned!”
