DICHOS Y REFRANES CUBANOS: LOS 20 QUE MÁS DECIMOS LOS CUBANOS. PHOTOS

Los cubanos somos dicharacheros, tenemos una particular manera de interactuar que hace que en muchas ocasiones nos tomemos los contratiempos con buen semblante o al menos parezca que lo hacemos. Los cubanos, además, sabemos de todo, de todo aconsejamos, de todo hemos tenido vivencias y para todo tenemos una salida ingeniosa o inesperada.

A continuación dejamos algunos de los refranes que más se dicen en Cuba: auténtica radiografía de cómo somos, cómo pensamos y de cómo vivimos.

1)- A MAL TIEMPO BUENA CARA: una sonrisa desarma más que una protesta, un buen gesto y una cara amable son más efectivas que las súplicas o imposiciones. Con buena disposición se encuentran mejor las soluciones, se despejan las dudas y se halla el camino. Los cubanos lo saben y hacen de esta su mejor arma ante los muchos y diversos contratiempos que les reserva el día a día.

2)- NO HAY AL MAL QUE DURE CIEN AÑOS NI CUERPO QUE LO RESISTA: para algunos este refrán es un cómodo conformismo o llamada a la inacción; para otros, sabio comportamiento que da esperanzas ante las situaciones prolongadas cuya solución no se vislumbra (siempre que llueve escampa). Tristemente, la vida sí demuestra que los males pueden durar demasiado y los cuerpos tienen capacidades casi insospechadas para soportarlos.

3)- QUIEN TIENE UNA TIENDA QUE LA ATIENDA (y si no que la venda): se aplica tanto a las relaciones de pareja asimétricas, donde uno da más que el otro o en los negocios, como a los proyectos o negocios. Las personas, y las relaciones requieren tiempo para que fructifiquen y si no se les va a conceder el requerido, mejor cambiar y enfocar las energías hacia otros lugares.

4)- CUANDO EL RIO SUENA ES PORQUE PIEDRAS TRAE: siempre que hay un rumor extendido o replicado existe algún basamento que lo sustente.

5)- A QUIEN NACE PA’TAMAL DEL CIELO LE CAEN LAS HOJAS (cuando el mal es de c* no valen guayabas verdes): hay que reconocerlo; por mucha buena cara que uno ponga, por muy o poco justificado que esté el clishé de que los cubanos son alegres o tienen buen carácter hay personas -o al menos períodos en la vida- en que todo parece conjugarse y los astros alinearse para que solo acontezcan desgracias, fallos, imprevistos, eventos fatídicos.

6)- AL PAN PAN Y AL VINO VINO: las cosas deben decirse claras y directamente, sin rodeos, circunloquios ni desviaciones. Tristemente, en la práctica no siempre puede hacerse.

7)- CAMARÓN QUE SE DUERME SE LO LLEVA LA CORRIENTE: aunque muchos cubanos no hayan visto un camarón en sus mesas ni lo consuman con frecuencia pese a vivir en una Isla, este dicho se usa como llamado a la acción y al movimiento. El dicho cubano criolliza el latino carpe diem y alude a que el tiempo pasa y las oportunidades también.

8)- QUIEN TIENE PADRINO SE BAUTIZA: en Cuba el llamado tráfico de influencias, sociolismo u obtención de cosas, beneficios o ventajas por relaciones personales son el día a día de las interacciones entre las personas. Como los salarios no valen y los servicios son de mala calidad o no funcionan, las personas consiguen ‘resolver’ sus problemas y necesidades gracias a los favores o prebendas que les da conocer a alguien en puesto clave o con poder para decidir, conseguir o dar. Una versión de valor histórica y en desuso era tiburón se moja pero salpica.

9)- DONDE COMEN DOS COMEN TRES: reflejo de la hospitalidad del cubano que ‘echa agua a la sopa’ o pone un plato de más si aparece un visitante inesperado ‘casualmente’ a la hora de la comida.

10)- QUIEN TIENE AMIGO TIENE UN CENTRAL: aunque tener un central ya no es lo que era antes, la bonanza de la producción de azúcar de otras épocas se tomó como analogía para ponderar el peso y la importancia de un buen amigo. Un amigo cubano sirve hasta para un remiendo: te acompaña al hospital si tienes un familiar enfermo o pasa la noche en vela si hay un funeral, está pendiente de tus cosas y te escucha todas tus quejas hasta el cansancio, te dona sangre si hace falta para un ingreso hospitalario, te presta su ropa, su dinero. Un amigo cubano es casi la mayor riqueza con que la vida podrá premiarte aunque a veces el destino ponga miles de kilómetros de por medio.

11)- DE TAL PALO TAL ASTILLA (de casta le viene al galgo, hijo de gato caza ratón): refiere conductas similares y esperables entre personas con algún parentesco. El refrán hace justicia a la influencia de la genética y la educación en el seno familiar.

12)- AL QUE DIOS SE LO DIO SAN PEDRO SE LO BENDIGA: condensación popular que repele envidias o malas valoraciones de las dichas ajenas. Si alguien es afortunado, tiene suerte o éxitos en la vida, bravo por él.

13)- DIOS LE DA BARBA A QUIEN NO TIENE QUIJADA(quijá): en ocasiones las personas tienen oportunidades, ventajas y beneficios que ni merecen ni saben aprovechar (en los 90 dio origen a un chiste que en voz baja y con picardía repicaba en los hogares cubanos).

14)- PERRO QUE LADRA NO MUERDE: la fanfarronería suele ser vacua. No siempre los comportamientos más escandalosos y llamativos se corresponden con las personas más activas. No siempre que alguien vocifera un rasgo es porque lo posee. Similar es el uso que se da de no es oro todo lo que brilla, que alerta que las apariencias engañan y que tras el primer velo en ocasiones subyacen características no tan visibles ni esperadas.

15)- EL QUE NO LLORA NO MÁMA: si se desea algo hay que pedirlo o exigirlo con todas las energías y recursos de que se disponga. Sentados, callados o esperando nunca se ha obtenido nada porque del cielo solo cae agua y los pajaritos son más chiquitos y van al río.

16)- A DIOS ROGANDO Y CON EL MAZO DANDO: hay quienes promulgan una cosa pero realizan otra, quienes exigen conductas que no practican. Este refrán se emplea mucho en Cuba para quienes en ocasiones desde la comodidad que les otorga el poder abogan por comportamientos en otros que no reservan para sí: los oportunistas, los acomodados, los vivebien piden austeridad y viven en la opulencia, piden sacrificio y viven en el derroche.

17)- A QUIEN MADRUGA DIOS LO AYUDA: el éxito es para los trabajadores, los que se empeñan, los que no pierden el tiempo ni malgastan las horas de sus días.

18)- LA AVARICIA ROMPE EL SACO: la búsqueda del éxito, el confort y el progreso son el motor de las personas y las sociedades pero, en ocasiones, se pierde el rumbo, se equivocan las prioridades y lo que en inicio pudo ser un buen camino o actitud termina torciéndose y acarreando más problemas que beneficios. El límite entre el deseo y la codicia no siempre suele ser claro para todos (el que mucho abarca poco aprieta).

19)- DONDE MANDA CAPITAN NO MANDA MARINERO: las jerarquías se imponen aunque en ocasiones no les asista la razón y todos, en alguno o muchos contextos de nuestras vidas, tenemos que acatar lo que diga un superior o jefe aunque estemos en completo o parcial desacuerdo.

20)- EL QUE NO TIENE DE CONGO, TIENE DE CARABALI: El que mejor y más cabalmente nos define como nación y como cultura. Cuba es un país mestizo en sus credos, gustos y fisonomía de sus personas. En la Isla no solo puede verse la mezcla en la apariencia de las personas y sus muy diferentes formas de ser, sino en la propia cultura e idiosincrasia: en los hogares junto con el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús convive un coco de elegúa y las personas bailan el regetón más pegado que disfrutan la más clásica de las sinfonías, ajiaco y mixtura, eso es Cuba y eso los cubanos.

CUBAN SAYINGS (DICHOS) AND PROVERBS: THE 20 CUBANS SAY MOST. PHOTOS

We Cubans are talkative, we have a particular way of interacting that often makes us take setbacks with a good demeanor, or at least it seems that we do. Cubans also know everything, we advise everything, we have had experiences of everything and for everything, we have an ingenious or unexpected way out.

Here are some of the sayings that are most often said in Cuba: an authentic x-ray of how we are, how we think, and how we live.

1) – IN BAD WEATHER GOOD FACE: a smile disarms more than a protest, a good gesture and a friendly face are more effective than pleas or impositions. With a good disposition, solutions are better found, doubts are cleared and the way is found. Cubans know this and make this their best weapon in the face of the many and diverse setbacks that day-to-day has in store for them.

2) – THERE IS NO EVIL THAT LASTS A HUNDRED YEARS OR BODY THAT RESISTS IT: for some this saying is a comfortable conformism or call to inaction; for others, wise behavior that gives hope to prolonged situations whose solution is not in sight (whenever it rains, it clears). Sadly, life does show that evils can last too long and bodies have almost unsuspected capacities to bear them.

3) – WHO HAS A STORE THAT SERVES IT (and if not that sells it): it applies both to asymmetric relationships, where one gives more than the other or in business, as well as to projects or businesses. People and relationships require time to bear fruit and if the required time is not granted, it is better to change and focus energies elsewhere.

4) – WHEN THE RIVER SOUNDS IT IS BECAUSE IT BRINGS STONES: whenever there is a widespread or replicated rumor there is some basis that supports it.

5) – TO WHO IS BORN PA’TAMAL FROM HEAVEN, THE LEAVES FALL (when the evil is c * green guavas are not worth it): we must admit it; no matter how good a face one may put, no matter how or little justified the clishé that Cubans are happy or have a good character, there are people – or at least periods in life – in which everything seems to combine and the stars align so that only misfortunes, failures, unforeseen events, fatal events occur.

6) – TO THE BREAD BREAD AND TO THE WINE WINE: things must be said clearly and directly, without detours, circumlocations, or deviations. Sadly, in practice, it can’t always be done.

7) – SHRIMP THAT SLEEP IS TAKEN BY THE CURRENT: Although many Cubans have not seen a shrimp on their tables or consume it frequently despite living on an island, this saying is used as a call to action and movement. The Cuban saying creolizes the Latin carpe diem and alludes to the fact that time passes and opportunities as well.

8) – WHO HAS A SPONSOR IS BAPTIZED: in Cuba the so-called influence peddling, sociolism or obtaining things, benefits, or advantages through personal relationships are the day-to-day interactions between people. As the salaries are not worth it and the services are of poor quality or do not work, people manage to ‘solve’ their problems and needs thanks to the favors or perks that someone in a key position or with the power to decide, obtain or give them gives. A disused and historically valuable version was shark gets wet but splashes.

9) – WHERE DO TWO EAT THREE: A reflection of the hospitality of the Cuban who ‘throws water into the soup’ or puts an extra plate if an unexpected visitor appears ‘by chance’ at lunchtime

10) – WHOEVER HAS A FRIEND HAS A CENTRAL: although having a central is not what it used to be, the boom in sugar production of other times was taken as an analogy to weigh the weight and importance of a good friend. A Cuban friend is even useful for a patch: he accompanies you to the hospital if you have a sick family member or stays up all night if there is a funeral, he is aware of your things and listens to all your complaints ad nauseam, he donates blood if necessary for hospital admission, he lends you his clothes, his money. A Cuban friend is almost the greatest wealth with which life can reward you, although sometimes fate puts thousands of kilometers in between.

11) – DE TAL PALO TAL CHIP (caste comes to the greyhound, son of cat hunting mouse): refers to similar and expected behaviors between people with some relationship. The saying does justice to the influence of genetics and education within the family.

12) – TO WHOM GOD GAVE IT SAINT PETER BLESS HIM: popular condensation that repels envy or bad evaluations of the happiness of others. If someone is lucky, has luck or successes in life, bravo for him.

13) – GOD GIVES A BEARD TO THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE A JAW (quijá): sometimes people have opportunities, advantages and benefits that they neither deserve nor know how to take advantage of (in the 90s it gave rise to a joke that quietly and mischievously rang in Cuban homes).

14) – DOG THAT BARKS DOES NOT BITE: bragging is usually empty. Not always the most outrageous and striking behaviors correspond to the most active people. It is not always that someone shouts a trait because they own it. Similar is the use made of all that glitters is not gold, which warns that appearances can be deceiving and that sometimes characteristics not so visible or expected underlie behind the first veil.

15) – THE ONE WHO DOES NOT CRY, DOES NOT MOM: if you want something you have to ask for it or demand it with all the energy and resources available. Sitting, quiet, or waiting, nothing has ever been obtained because only waterfalls from the sky and the birds are smaller and go to the river.

16) – TO GOD PRAYING AND GIVING WITH THE GAVEL: there are those who promulgate one thing but do another, those who demand behaviors that they do not practice. This saying is widely used in Cuba for those who sometimes, from the comfort that power grants them, advocate behaviors in others that they do not reserve for themselves: the opportunists, the well-off, the well-off, ask for austerity and live in opulence, ask for sacrifice and live in waste.

17) – TO WHOM GOD HELPS YOU EARLY: success is for the workers, those who commit themselves, those who do not waste time or waste the hours of their days.

18) – GREED BREAKS THE SACK: the search for success, comfort, and progress are the engine of people and societies but, sometimes, the course is lost, priorities are mistaken and what in the beginning could be a good path or attitude ends up twisting and bringing more problems than benefits. The boundary between desire and greed is not always clear to everyone (the one that covers a lot does not squeeze much).

19) – WHERE THE CAPTAIN SAYS, DOESN’T SEND A SAILOR: hierarchies are imposed although sometimes reason does not assist them and everyone, in one or many contexts of our lives, has to abide by what a superior or boss says even if we are in full or partial disagreement.

20) – THE ONE THAT DOES NOT HAVE OF CONGO, HAS OF CARABALI: The one that best and most fully defines us as a nation and as a culture. Cuba is a mestizo country in its creeds, tastes, and physiognomy of its people. On the Island, you can not only see the mixture in the appearance of the people and their very different ways of being but in the culture and idiosyncrasy itself: in the homes together with the Sacred Heart of Jesus a coco de elegúa coexists and people dance the most attached regetón enjoyed by the most classic of symphonies, ajiaco and mixtura, that is Cuba and that is Cubans.
