Rolando La Serie one of the most popular singers of all time in Cuba had a big, open voice, slightly hoarse and aggressive. Although some of his biggest hits were ballads, his up-tempo singing was a marvel of improvisation and sound. His attack and his enthusiasm earned him the nickname ”El Guapo de la Cancion,” which in Cuban slang translates as a valiant or bold singer.
Mr. La Serie born in Santa Clara in Cuba started out as a percussionist — he was one of the original members of Beny More’s group — whose singing was seen as a bit of an embarrassment. But in 1956 he had the opportunity to record a ballad by Mario Fernandez Porta called ”Mentiras Tuyas,” which he transformed with his distinctively hard sound. The composer of the song objected to Mr. La Serie’s interpretation, but the record sold 30,000 copies in the first few days after its release.
At the beginning of his professional life, he alternated his status as a musician with the trade of shoemaker. He performed sporadically as a percussionist in the Santa Clara Municipal Band. Right there, when he was 20 years old, he performed with the Arcaño orchestra and his Maravillas, replacing Miguelito Cuní.

In 1946 he traveled to Havana, and worked as a percussionist in the Hermanos Palau orchestra, and eventually collaborated with different groups. Sometime later, he became a timpanist and choir in Benny Moré’s Giant Band.
Ernesto Duarte Brito together with the Álvarez Guedes brothers, owners of the Gema record label, produced a bolero production that did not have the expected projection. The album was arranged by Duarte, with the characteristic sound of a Cuban jazz band.
Mentiras tuyas, recorded in 1957 and written by Mario Fernández Porta, was defining in the way he sang, with colloquial incursions and dialogues. Throughout his career, he recorded more than thirty albums.
LA SERIE LEAVES CUBA
With the advent of the Cuban Revolution, he emigrated first to Caracas, Venezuela, and then to Miami, where he continued his career, counting on a good part of his audience. He maintained a busy schedule, recording with the music’s biggest stars, even in exile from Cuba.
He recorded in New York with Tito Puente and his band in the 1960s for an album called ”Pachanga in New York” and with the great Puerto Rican band Cortijo y Su Combo, singing with Ismael Rivera. Along the way he continued to have hits, including ”Amalia Batista,” now a Latin standard. He added tangos to his repertory, and his frequent interjection ”De Pelicula!” (”From a movie!”) became his trademark.
In the 1970’s he moved to Florida, and in the 80’s he recorded with Johnny Pacheco on Fania Records. He began recording with Caiman Records, which produced the album ”Ay, Se Paso La Serie,” recorded in 1985 in a modern Cuban style.
In the ’60s and 70s, he performed regularly in Argentina, remembering his participation in the television series Al Estilo de Mancera, hosted by Pipo Mancera on channel 11 in Buenos Aires, in 1978.
He passed away in Coral Gables, Florida, on November 22, 1998, of heart complications.
He was survived by his wife, Gisela.

Rolando La Serie uno de los cantantes más populares de todos los tiempos en Cuba tenía una voz grande, abierta, ligeramente ronca y agresiva. Aunque algunos de sus mayores éxitos fueron las baladas, su canto rápido fue una maravilla de la improvisación y el sonido. Su estilo de ataque y su entusiasmo le valieron el apodo de “El Guapo de la Canción”, que en la jerga cubana se traduce como un cantante valiente o atrevido.
La Serie, nacido en Santa Clara en Cuba, fue al comienzo de su vida profesional alternó su condición de músico con el oficio de zapatero. Actuó esporádicamente como percusionista en la Banda Municipal de Santa Clara. Allí mismo, cuando tenía 20 años, actuó con la orquesta Arcaño y sus Maravillas, en sustitución de Miguelito Cuní.
En 1946 viajó a La Habana, trabajó como percusionista en la orquesta Hermanos Palau y eventualmente colaboró con diferentes agrupaciones. Algún tiempo después, se convirtió en timbal y en el coro en la Banda Gigante de Benny Moré.

Fue uno de los miembros originales del grupo de Beny More, cuyo canto fue visto como un poco embarazoso. Pero en 1956 tuvo la oportunidad de grabar una balada de Mario Fernández Porta llamada ”Mentiras Tuyas”, que transformó con su distintivo sonido duro. El compositor de la canción se opuso a la interpretación de La Serie, pero el disco vendió 30.000 copias en los primeros días después de su lanzamiento.
Ernesto Duarte Brito junto a los hermanos Álvarez Guedes, dueños del sello discográfico Gema, realizaron una producción de boleros que no tuvo la proyección esperada. El disco fue arreglado por Duarte, con el característico sonido de una banda de jazz cubana.
Mentiras tuyas, grabado en 1957 y escrito por Mario Fernández Porta, fue definitorio en su forma de cantar, con incursiones coloquiales y diálogos. A lo largo de su carrera, grabó más de treinta discos.
LA SERIE DEJA CUBA
Con el advenimiento de la Revolución Cubana, emigró primero a Caracas, Venezuela, y luego a Miami, donde continuó su carrera, contando con buena parte de su público. Mantuvo una apretada agenda, grabando con las mayores estrellas de la música, incluso en el exilio de Cuba.

En los años 60 y 70 actuó regularmente en Argentina, recordando su participación en la serie de televisión Al Estilo de Mancera, conducida por Pipo Mancera en el canal 11 de Buenos Aires, en 1978.
