The “Ibeyi” Musical Duo formed by the Cuban Afro-French twin sisters Lisa-Kaindé Diaz and Naomi Diaz has achieved little-known success in a musical ensemble of the performing musical genre of the Yoruba culture. The duo sing in English, French, Spanish, and ‘Yoruba’, a language spoken by their ancestors before being brought to Cuba as slaves in the 1700s. In Yoruba, Ibeyi (Ìbejì) means “twins”.
THE MUSICAL DUO “IBEYI”, in its music, has elements of Yoruba, French, and Afro-Cuban, and fuses jazz with rhythms, samples with traditional instruments. Lisa, the main singer, plays the piano; Naomi plays the traditional Peruvian / Cuban percussion instruments Cajón and Bata Drum.
The twins (born December 13, 1994, in Paris) lived in Havana for the first two years of their lives, then moved to Paris, where they were educated. They visited Cuba annually during the holidays but grew up mainly in Paris, where they currently reside.
His father was the famous Cuban percussionist Anga Díaz, who has received a Grammy Award for his work with the Latin jazz band Irakere, and was also a member of the Buena Vista Social Club ensemble, playing with Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, and Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz. alias Compay Segundo. Upon her death in 2006, Naomi, then 11 years old, learned to play her signature instrument, the cajon. Together, the sisters studied Yoruba folk songs. Her mother is Franco-Venezuelan singer Maya Dagnino, who serves as her manager and encouraged Lisa-Kainde’s songwriting.
“IBEYI” ARTISTIC CAREER
In 2013, they signed with the record label, Recordings XL. Label owner Richard Russell is the only other contributor to the self-titled debut album, released in 2015. Released when they were 20 years old, the album pays tribute to the late father of his and the song. Yanira immortalizes the duo’s older sister, who died in 2013. The song ends with a synthesizer that sounds like a life support monitor.
In 2014, they received attention for the video for the second single from their album, “River.” The twins appear in the foreground at all times, taking turns having their heads submerged while the other sings.
Since the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album in February 2015, Ibeyi has wowed audiences around the world with her unique blend of modern pop, hip-hop, and electronica influenced by traditional Yorùbá sounds.
In 2016, the twins appeared in Beyoncé’s short film Lemonade album as members of Beyonce’s agricultural utopia that provides a safe space for black women. In May 2016, Ibeyi returned to Havana for live performances at the Crucero CHANEL 2016 collection in Cuba and the international music festival MUSICABANA.
His 2017 album Ash was nominated for the IMPALA European Album of the Year Award.
Due to the Pandemic, their presentations have decreased between 2020 and 2021 even when they remain artistically active.
“IBEYI”. ITS INFLUENCES
Like their father Anga Díaz, the duo claims Frank Ocean, James Blake, and Rey Krule among their influences. In live shows, they have covered rapper Jay Electronica’s Best In Tune With Infinity and others.
His recordings also show a strong and spiritual connection to his Yoruba roots, as do the name and themes. They also pay tribute to Santeria, a syncretism practiced by many Afro-Cubans.

El Duo Musical “Ibeyi” formado por las hermanas gemelas cubano afro-francés Lisa-Kaindé Diaz y Naomi Diaz han alcanzado un exito poco conocido en un conjunto musical del género musical intrpretativo de la cultura Yoruba. El dúo canta en inglés, francés, Español y ‘Yoruba’, un idioma hablado por sus antepasados antes de ser llevados a Cuba como esclavos en el 1700. En yoruba, Ibeyi (Ìbejì) significa “gemelos”.
EL DUO MUSICAL “IBEYI”, en su música, tiene elementos de yoruba, francés y Afrocubano, y fusiona jazz con ritmos, samples con instrumentos tradicionales., Lisa, la cantante principal, toca el piano; Naomi toca los instrumentos de percusión tradicionales peruanos/cubanos cajón y Tambor batá.
