“Ahora es una oportunidad para escuchar al pueblo cubano y hacer un cambio positivo”, dijo, tras felicitar al pueblo de Cuba por mostrar pacíficamente la fuerza de su voluntad y el poder de su voz.
“Después de la protesta del 11 de julio, el gobierno ha intentado constantemente silenciar, incluso a través de la opresión violenta, de detenciones injustas de cientos de manifestantes, de la detención de periodistas, de activistas, censura en Internet y otras tácticas que rechazamos”, recordó.

Las declaraciones del portavoz del Departamento de Estado ocurren poco después que el gobierno de La Habana lanzara acusaciones sobre los organizadores de la marcha del 15N y sus presuntos vínculos con entidades gubernamentales estadounidenses.

Tras la negativa de las autoridades locales a conceder permiso a las manifestaciones pacíficas del 15N, Estados Unidos no solo condenó la actitud del oficialismo, sino que defendió el derecho constitucional a la libertad de expresión de los cubanos.
