La música corre por nuestras venas. Cuba es ritmo, sabrosura, fortaleza del tambor y cuna de grandes cantantes cubanos.
Por eso son muchos los que acercan a este país para conocer desde adentro la autenticidad y lo genuino de nuestro son, mambo, chachachá, habanera, danzón, conga, salsa e, incluso, el popular reguetón.
Y como los cubanos somos mestizaje cultural, nuestra música es el resultado de ese sabor mezclado: un «folclore palpitante», al decir de nuestro Alejo Carpentier.
«Los mejores cantantes cubanos», ¡qué atrevida frase! Hemos tenido tantos, tantos músicos a lo largo de la historia… Con esta modesta selección de las mujeres cantantes de Cuba podrás recordar y conocer un poco sobre nuestras reinas musicales.
1- RITA MONTANER “LA UNICA”
Rita fue una de las mejores cantantes cubanas y también de las más completas artistas. Incursionó, además, en el teatro, el cine, la televisión y la radio. Se convirtió en la primera cantante femenina que se escuchó en la radio de Cuba.
Reconocida por muchos como una leyenda de la música tanto por su voz como por su maestría en el piano. Nuestra Rita desprendía cubanía en todas sus actuaciones.
Los tambores de su Guanabacoa natal y sus estudios de música clásica la formaron como una auténtica y genuina cubana. Al decir de Nicolás Guillén: «Su arte expresa hasta el hondón humano lo verdaderamente nuestro […], pues solo ella y nadie más ha hecho del solar habanero, de la calle cubana, una categoría universal».

Su talento y versatilidad transcendió las fronteras de esta isla. Escenarios de México, Estados Unidos, España, Argentina, Venezuela y Francia acogieron a esa criolla, la «Rita de Cuba».

2. CELIA CRUZ “LA REINA DE LA SALSA”
Una sola palabra basta para identificar rápidamente a Celia y esa es: ¡azúcar! Así como su grito, sabor cubano y fuerza de mujer latina era lo que desprendía Celia Cruz.
Su estilo único, extravagante, atrevido, sus movimientos de caderas, sus pelucas y su voz poderosa la coronan como una de las mejores cantantes cubanas de salsa. Pero Celia fue una cantante muy versátil, desde son, son montuno, guaguancó, guaracha, rumba, bolero hasta salsa, pareciera que podía interpretar casi cualquier ritmo con un estilo único.
Aunque Celia ya era Celia cuando llegó a Estados Unidos, fue en este país donde despegó con mayor potencia su carrera artística. De allí son frutos el sabroso guaguancó afrocubano Quimbara y los exitazos La vida es un carnaval y Nadie se salva de la rumba.

Fue protagonista de numerosos reconocimientos y homenajes, desde premios Grammy, un lugar en el Salón de la Fama de la Música Latina Internacional, una estrella en el Paseo de la Fama de Hollywood hasta un libro biográfico y una telenovela en su honor. Es considerada, además, una de las exponentes más influyentes de la música contemporánea.

3. ELENA BURKE “LA REINA DEL FEELING”
La Señora Sentimiento, como también se le conoció a nuestra Elena, fue la máxima representación femenina del Movimiento Feeling en Cuba a partir de los años 50. Una defensora del amor y exponente innegable de nuestra cancionística.
No hay cubano que oiga el nombre Elena Burke e inmediatamente piense en canción sentimental.

Antes de comenzar su carrera como solista integró el conjunto Las Mulatas del Fuego, el trio Las Cancioneras y los cuartetos Facundo Rivero, Orlando de la Rosa y Las dʼ Aida. Sus canciones se escuchaban desde la televisión hasta clubes nocturnos.
Su voz de amplio registro y versatilidad, sus interpretaciones a capella, su estilismo musical y la personalidad de su canto la convierten en una de las mejores vocalistas cubanas.

Nuestra música emana de la tierra, desde los más intrínsecos bateyes orientales hasta los más urbanos solares habaneros. Y como parte clave se encuentran nuestros músicos que vienen desde allí, «desde abajo».
Los cafés, bares, plazas, descargas en casa de amigos, todos contaban con la presencia de los cantantes. Entonces, sí, nuestros músicos son «de la loma y cantan en el llano», son de aquí y de allá, son de donde la tierra es más caliente y llevan su música hasta cualquier lugar del mundo.
Ellos supieron adaptar los ritmos europeos, africanos, norteamericanos, etc., a un estilo propio. Pero la música cubana se reinventa a la par que bebe de la tradición. Y en esa misma fusión radica la autenticidad de los ritmos cubanos.

2. CELIA CRUZ “LA REINA DE LA SALSA”

Her unique style, extravagant, daring, her hips movements, her wigs, and her powerful voice crown her as one of the best Cuban salsa singers. But Celia was a very versatile singer, from son, son montuno, guaguancó, guaracha, rumba, bolero to salsa, it seems that she could interpret almost any rhythm with a unique style.

Senora Sentimiento, as our Elena was also known, was the highest female representation of the Feeling Movement in Cuba from the 1950s on. She was a defender of love and an undeniable exponent of our songwriting.
There is no Cuban who hears the name Elena Burke and immediately thinks of a sentimental song.
