Los Zafiros, el cuarteto de armonía vocal que revolucionó el panorama musical cubano nació en 1961 en el barrio habanero de Cayo Hueso, y se inspiró en los grupos norteamericanos The Platters, The Mills Brothers and The Modernaries.
Leoncio Morua “Kike”, Miguel Cancio “Miguelito”, Ignacio Elejalde y Eduardo Elio Hernández “El Chino” formaron la afamada agrupacion que en agosto de 1965 les llega su más importante éxito, con el Music Hall de Cuba.

Toda la creatividad musical de THE ZAFIROS fue una fusión de géneros cubanos, como el bolero, con doo-wop, baladas, R&B, calipso, bossa nova y rock and roll primitivo. Los Zafiros, formados el barrio de Cayo Hueso, La Habana en 1961, por Miguel Ángel Cancio Soria, con los siguientes integrantes:

Miguel Cancio (Miguelito) (Fundador y primer Director)
Ignacio Elejalde, contratenor, está en el registro alto.
Eduardo Elio Hernández (El Chino)
Oscar Aguirre (de Fontana) (primera guitarra y compositor).
posteriormente Manuel Galbán (guitarra) pasó a ser director musical, y en ocasiones fue sustituido por Oscar Aguirre (guitarra).
CARRERA ARTÍSTICA
El grupo tuvo un gran éxito desde el principio, con altas ventas récord y giras populares en el país y en el extranjero.
Bajo la dirección musical y el acompañamiento a la guitarra de Manuel Galván (1931-2011) se presentan en el Olimpia de París y actúan en Checoslovaquia, Polonia Alemania y la Unión Soviética en una gira de cuatro meses.

Sin embargo, algunos miembros del grupo eran autodestructivos e indisciplinados, bebían mucho y realizaban otras actividades. Dos murieron jóvenes: Ignacio murió en 1981 a la edad de 37 años de una hemorragia cerebral. Kike murió en 1983 de cirrosis hepática. El Chino, acosado por problemas de la vista, el habla y la bebida, vivió solo en Cayo Hueso hasta su muerte el 8 de agosto de 1995 a los 56 años. En 2001, World Circuit organizó una sesión de grabación especial para Galbán y Cancio en la EGREM. Esta sesión juega un papel central en la película y marca la primera vez que Galbán y Cancio graban juntos en más de treinta años.
En 1987 se formó un grupo revival conocido como ‘Los Nuevos Zafiros’, pero nunca alcanzaron la fama que tuvieron los originales.

La canción, “He Venido”, cantada por ellos, en 2011 cobró protagonismo como tema musical de la serie de televisión Breaking Bad. La escena central del Episodio 306 contiene material filmado en el patio de una pieza del transportador de destrucción por la compactación del vehículo recreativo (RV) utilizado por Walt y Jesse para cocinar sus lotes iniciales de metanfetamina. A pesar de los años y de las trágicas circunstancias de su desintegración, la trayectoria de los “mulatos cantores”, artífices de un capitulo estelar en la historia de los cuartetos en Cuba, sigue en la memoria musical de los cubanos.

ARTISTIC CAREER
