Por la riqueza, variedad y excelente conservación de su flora y fauna, Pinar del Río es llamado “el jardín de Cuba”. La UNESCO ha declarado a la península de Guanahacabibes reserva de la biosfera de la Cordillera del Rosario, y al valle de Viñales patrimonio cultural de la humanidad. Es la tierra en la que se cultiva el mejor tabaco del mundo.
Pinar del Río está a sólo 174 km (108 millas) de La Habana. Aún en buen estado, una carretera une las dos ciudades. La arquitectura de su centro histórico es ecléctica, y sus casas bajas de colores suaves, cuyos porches parecen formar una galería interminable, tienen un gran encanto. Soroa, Cuba, el Jardín de Orquídeas de Soroa, mundialmente famoso, y las cascadas y los jardines se han visto afectados por huracanes consecutivos, pero han aumentado las colecciones de flores raras donadas por otros jardines y coleccionistas privados.
Las primeras orquídeas llegaron a Soroa en 1948. Fueron importadas por el fundador del orquideario de Soroa Cuba, Tomás Felipe Camacho. Soroa lleva el nombre de dos hermanos españoles, Lorenzo y Antonio Soroa Muñagorri, que llegaron a Cuba en 1856 con la esperanza de hacer fortuna como productores de café.
Los encantos naturales de Pinar del Río son particularmente destacables también en la Reserva de la Biosfera Sierra del Rosario y su asiento del Orquideario de Soroa, el más completo del país con 750 variedades.
Soroa eco-amigable se ha recuperado, el orquideario ha ganado campeonatos nacionales y extranjeros de Orquidearios por sus sinuosos caminos, pabellones cubiertos con finas mantas y asombrosas cascadas.
Soroa, que se encuentra a 70 kilómetros al oeste de la capital cubana, es un sitio de impresionante belleza natural, con una cascada de 22 metros. Una de las montañas que rodean a Soroa, conocidas como “mogotes” por sus cimas redondeadas, es un mirador que domina una zona de una belleza impresionante, llena de aves y plantas, muchas de las cuales son endémicas de la región.
La Entrada al Orquideario de Soroa o Jardín de las Orquídeas de Cuba Soroa es un lugar de visita obligada en Cuba para todos los amantes de la naturaleza. Se ubica entre las montañas de la Sierra del Rosario en Pinar del Río, en un pequeño valle de más de 200 metros de altura por donde discurre el río Manantiales. Este lugar fue elegido en el siglo pasado por su microclima y original vegetación, para crear un jardín botánico dedicado principalmente a las orquídeas tropicales, el Orquideario de Soroa, que es el más grande de Cuba y uno de los más importantes del mundo. Este es un sitio de investigación dedicado al estudio y conservación de las orquídeas cubanas, así como un espacio de exhibición de estas plantas. Otras bellezas del lugar rodean el Orquideario.
Al visitar la capital provincial de Pinar del Río, también se encuentra la casi desconocida Destilería “Guayabita del Pinar”, donde aún se elabora artesanalmente la bebida del mismo nombre, siguiendo una receta milenaria; el Palacio Guash y el Teatro Milanés uno de los recuerdos de mejores tiempos de la República de Cuba.
