Matanzas es la capital de la provincia cubana de Matanzas . Conocido por sus poetas, la cultura y el folclore afrocubano, se encuentra en la costa norte de la isla de Cuba, en la Bahía de Matanzas (Bahía de Matanzas española), 90 kilómetros (56 millas) al este de la capital La Habana y 32 kilómetros (20 millas) al oeste de la ciudad turística de Varadero.
Matanzas es llamada la Ciudad de los Puentes, por los diecisiete puentes que cruzan los tres ríos que atraviesan la ciudad (Río Yumuri, San Juan y Canimar). Por ello se la denominó como la “Venecia de Cuba”. También fue llamada “La Atenas de Cuba” (“La Atenas de Cuba”) por sus poetas.
Matanzas es conocida como la cuna de las tradiciones musicales y bailables danzón y rumba. Será espinoso y la vez placentero establecer un justo equilibrio entre geografía, patrimonio inmueble y patrimonio intangible, si de veras se pretende llegar a las raíces y acercarse a esa esencia que para algunos, es una actitud conceptuada en la palabra matanceridad.
EL ORIGEN DE SU NOMBRE
El nombre Matanzas significa “masacre” y se refiere a una matanza putativa en 1510 en el puerto del mismo nombre, en la que 30 soldados españoles intentaron cruzar uno de los ríos para atacar un campamento aborigen en la otra orilla. Los soldados españoles no tenían botes, por lo que solicitaron la ayuda de pescadores nativos. Sin embargo, una vez que llegaron a la mitad del río, los pescadores volcaron los botes y, debido a la armadura de metal pesado de los soldados españoles, la mayoría de ellos se ahogaron. Solo sobrevivieron dos mujeres, una de las cuales se dice que es la bella María de Estrada, producto de ser capturada por un cacique. Se dice que De Estrada luego escapó del “poder del Cacique” y se casó con Pedro Sánchez Farfán en la ciudad de Trinidad. Según el historiador municipal Arnaldo Jiménez de la Cal, “[e]s el primer acto de rebelión de los indígenas en Cuba”.
GEOGRAFIA
La ciudad está ubicada en la costa norte de la isla de Cuba, a los tres lados de la Bahía de Matanzas. La bahía se adentra profundamente en la isla y tres ríos desembocan en la bahía dentro de los límites de la ciudad (Río Yumuri, San Juan y Canimar). Hacia el sureste, el paisaje se eleva hacia un cerro llamado Pan de Matanzas, separado de la costa atlántica por el valle de Yumuri y una cordillera costera.
La ciudad de Matanzas se divide en cuatro barrios: Versalles, Matanzas, Playa y Pueblo Nuevo. El municipio se divide en los barrios de Bachicha, Bailén, Barracones, Bellamar, Camarioca, Cárcel, Ceiba Mocha, Colón, Corral Nuevo, Guanábana, Ojo de Agua, Refugio, San Luis, San Severino, Simpson y Monserrate, Versalles y Yumurí.
MATANZAS, SUS MISTERIOS Y LEYENDAS
Matanzas ofrece atractivos y misterios; su singularidad de fundarse como ciudad y no villa, el origen de su nombre; los enigmas de su arqueología, el hecho de ofrecer esa mixtura entre poesía de alto vuelo e impresionante autenticidad de ritos africanos, como también de aparentar adormecida Atenas y mostrarse espartana.
Leyendas que entrelazan ríos, valles y cavernas; de rebeldes aborígenes y conquistadores despiadados; de amores imposibles y violentos; arman una urdimbre suficiente para desandar las calles como lo hizo Milanés, absorto en su amada Isa y rendirse, junto a él ante la cinta de plata del San Juan.
Pero el embrujo de esta urbe también ha sido fermento para que en la complicidad de la alcoba en exilio, un matrimonio lugareño dibujara y bordase la bandera de la estrella solitaria y también el escudo que hoy exhibe la nación.
Matanzas es esto y lo que resta por descubrirse, tal así que bardos de renombre como Byrne, Milanés o el mítico Seboruco; concierten en la prevalencia de una sustancia que ha de ser preservada.
No es casual que aunque algo distante de esos cantares en tiempo y motivado apenas por una insignificante lejanía a la ciudad, el poeta matancero Luis Lorente confesara: “Matanzas tiene algo que mata o enloquece. Yo no sé qué será: nadie lo sabe. Lugareño y viajero hablarán de misterio …

Matanzas is known as the cradle of danzón and rumba musical and dance traditions.
