FUE uno de los personajes mas populares y conocidos de mi Vieja Habana “Olga La Tamalera” era en realidad Olga Moré Jimenez, la protagonista y personaje central de una popular canción que interpretaran la famosa orquesta Aragón de Cienfuegos y el inolvidable músico cubano José Antonio Fajardo.
Ella, “La Tamalera” Olga nació en Cruces, en la antigua provincia de las Villas, el 23 de mayo de 1922 y siendo una mujer adulta vino a vivir en la calle Figuras número 180 entre Manrique y Tenerife, barrio de Los Sitios, donde logra echar raíces con su familia hasta que en 1949 la vida le jugó una mala pasada, perdió a su esposo y se quedó como la única responsable de tres hijos y una madre anciana.
Olga, sola, debía pagar un alquiler alto por el cuarto donde vivían y además darles de comer. Por esta razón decidió ser una de las primeras mujeres, negra por demás, en vender tamales en hojas en La Habana.
OLGA SE VUELVE “LA TAMALERA”…
Olga emprendió a vender tamales en 1949, se escuchaban sus ingeniosos pregones para atraer a los clientes en la esquina habanera de Prado y Neptuno, pero la calidad de sus tamales conquistó a músicos como Félix Reina y Fajardo, quienes compusieron el chachachá “Olga la tamalera”. Seguidamente la orquesta Aragón popularizó también a esa simple mujer.

No pregonaba ni tocaba de puerta en puerta como la mayoría de los vendedores callejeros de Cuba, al principio, se sienta en la bullanguera esquina de Prado y Neptuno, con un multicolor pañuelo en la cabeza, así mismo logra muy buenas ventas en las matinés de las sociedades de baile y recreo próximas al lugar como la Rosalía de Castro y el Centro Gallego.
Más tarde, por su exquisita calidad, Olga More adquirió su popularidad en La Habana, se dedica a trabajar por encargo desde su casa sin que disminuya su clientela. Por su puerta desfilaban en busca de sus ricos tamales caseros, toda clase de personas, hasta le encargaban con anticipación para celebrar bodas, cumpleaños y todo tipo de festejos.
Los tamales de Olga estaban elaborados de modo muy peculiar, ella nunca develó el secreto de su preparación. Siempre los confeccionaba a partir del mismo ritual: luego de rayar el maíz se ponía a cocinar en la gran cazuela que utilizaba para preparar la harina y era entonces cuando prefería estar a solas con los ingredientes y sus mañas, actitud que le dio cierto misticismo a sus tamales. Al final Olga lograba unos tamales en hojas exquisitos, muy diferentes de los que expendían en las fondas y cantinas a domicilio.
Otro lugar frecuentado por Olga fueron los salones de bailes populares, donde alternaba la venta, con algún que otro pasillo, de acuerdo a las canciones de moda en aquella época y precisamente fue alli donde conoció al flautista pinareño José Antonio Fajardo. Él era director de la Orquesta Fajardo y sus Estrellas, que ante el inconfundible sabor del manjar y la fama alcanzada por Olga, tuvo la gentileza de dedicarle una canción que tituló “Los tamalitos de Olga”, que derivó furor en la década del 50.
EL PREGÓN SE EXTIENDE…
Su fama se extendió por toda la isla y por el mundo cuando la orquesta Aragón en la década de los 50, incorporó a su repertorio la canción que Fajardo le habia dedicado a Olga Moré, que en su parte melódica decía:
Olga la tamalera
cocina que se pasó
se los vende con pimienta
y el que los prueba se come dos…
Me gustan los tamalitos
los tamalitos que vende Olga
Pican, no pican
los tamalitos que vende Olga, Olga…
El pregón, devino éxito internacional, de la mano de Rafael Lay y su agrupación (La Aragón), gracias a sus giras por América Latina y más tarde en los Estados Unidos y parte de Europa, y no resulta difícil creer que en varios países se tarareara el estribillo.
La canción, que además rinde culto a uno de los platos más sabrosos de la cocina cubana y de los pueblos mesoamericanos, grabada además por el proyecto ‘Estrellas de Areíto’, el cuarteto de saxofones ‘Magic Sax Quartet’ y el venezolano Oscar D´León, acumula la fabulosa cifra de 160 versiones.
El Ejemplo de Olga, fue de una verdadera cubania al levantarse ante la adversidad, no sólo ella le permitió que solucionara su situación en su momento, sino que sin proponérselo le dio sabor a La Habana, y sobre todo a la Isla.

He was the director of the Orquesta Fajardo y sus Estrellas, which before the unmistakable flavor of the delicacy and the fame achieved by Olga, was kind enough to dedicate a song to her entitled “Los tamalitos de Olga”, which caused a furor in the 1950s.
