La entrada irregular de cubanos por la frontera sur de Estados Unidos alcanzó en marzo una cifra superior a las 32 mil personas, lo que pone a la administración Biden ante el dilema de lidiar con una avalancha migratoria de la magnitud del éxodo del Mariel de 1980.
Aunque el Departamento de Aduanas y Protección de Fronteras (CBP) no ha publicado aún las estadísticas oficiales sobre llegada de inmigrantes durante el pasado mes, el diario The Washington Post reveló que el volumen de cubanos superó los 32 mil, el doble de los 16,550 registrados por puntos fronterizos de México en febrero.
Una fuente de CBP dijo a CiberCuba que las cifras de marzo eran elevadas, pero eludió confirmar un número exacto argumentando que por política, la agencia no comenta sobre versiones extraoficiales e informaciones internas.
De cualquier manera, los estimados publicados por el diario estadounidense y los comportamientos parciales compilados por días recientes sobre entradas por la frontera mexicana sitúan el flujo de cubanos en un panorama de crisis migratoria, comparable con otros hitos históricos.
Si se suman las potenciales cifras de marzo a los datos de llegadas de cubanos por puntos fronterizos de México durante los cinco meses anteriores del año fiscal 2022, los números resultan realmente apabullantes:
* Más de 78,752 inmigrantes cubanos han entrado durante el primer semestre del presente año fiscal a Estados Unidos.
* Unos 72,800 entraron después de la apertura de las fronteras cubanas y el levantamiento de visados, decretado por el gobierno de Nicaragua, a partir del pasado 22 de noviembre.
* 107,000 arribaron tras el ascenso de Joe Biden a la Casa Blanca y el anuncio de una política migratoria más flexible que la impuesta por la administración de Donald Trump, sin contar otros puntos de llegada por tierra y mar.
* Más de 174,800 cubanos han arribado por esa franja fronteriza después de la eliminación de la política de pies secos/pies mojados, entre los años fiscales 2017 y primer semestre de 2022 (octubre de 2021 a marzo de 2022).
* De hecho, el panorama de la inmigración cubana en Estados Unidos alcanza actualmente niveles del éxodo del Mariel, en 1980 (125,000), y rebasa con amplitud las cifras de la crisis de los balseros de 1994 (35,000).
A los datos relativos a la frontera sur se añaden unos 700 cubanos que arribaron por otras zonas fronterizas del territorio de Estados Unidos durante el primer semestre del año fiscal (FY2022), que comenzó el pasado 1 de octubre, y más de 1,200 que intentaron llegar a territorio estadounidense por vía marítima, según los reportes combinados de la Guardia Costera y la Patrulla Fronteriza.
Pero puede haber aún sorpresas mayores cuando se conozcan los registros oficiales del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS). Se espera que las cifras de CBP sobre el procesamiento de inmigrantes de todas las nacionalidades en puntos fronterizos durante marzo estén listas dentro de unas dos semanas.

The irregular entry of Cubans through the southern border of the United States reached a figure of more than 32,000 people in March, which puts the Biden administration in the dilemma of dealing with a migratory avalanche of the magnitude of the 1980 Mariel exodus.
Although the Department of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has not yet published official statistics on the arrival of immigrants during the past month, The Washington Post newspaper revealed that the volume of Cubans exceeded 32,000, double the 16,550 registered through Mexican border points in February.

* Some 72,800 entered after the opening of the Cuban borders and the lifting of visas, decreed by the Nicaraguan government, as of November 22.
* 107,000 arrived after the rise of Joe Biden to the White House and the announcement of a more flexible immigration policy than that imposed by the Donald Trump administration, not counting other arrival points by land and sea.
* More than 174,800 Cubans have arrived through that border strip after the elimination of the wet foot/dry foot policy, between fiscal years 2017 and the first semester of 2022 (October 2021 to March 2022).
* In fact, the panorama of Cuban immigration in the United States currently reaches levels of the Mariel exodus in 1980 (125,000), and widely exceeds the figures of the 1994 rafters crisis (35,000).
Added to the data related to the southern border are some 700 Cubans who arrived through other border areas of the United States territory during the first half of the fiscal year (FY2022), which began on October 1, and more than 1,200 who tried to arrive to US territory by sea, according to combined reports from the Coast Guard and Border Patrol.
But there may be even bigger surprises when official records from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) become known. CBP figures on the processing of immigrants of all nationalities at border points during March are expected to be ready in about two weeks.
