POTOTO Y FILOMENO is the name of an anthological production in which the excellent Cuban comedians Leopoldo Fernández and Aníbal de Mar showed off their singing qualities and sketches, with a whole play on words and occurrences very similar to those that made La Tremenda Corte.
Back in the 1940s, when recorders had not yet reached the island of Cuba and radio programs were broadcast live, Pototo and Filomeno could be heard, who were characters embodied precisely by Leopoldo Fernández and Aníbal de Mar, who more later they gave life to Tres Patines and the Lord Judge respectively. His presentations later began in a television show in 1955 called “El Show de Pototo y Filomeno”. This show was created by producer Álvaro de Villa.
The writer Arturo Liendo Lazcano was the one who at the end of the 50s was in charge of writing the scripts for this humorous duo.
Together with the musical group “Orquesta Melodias del 40”, they made a recording in 1957, where they immortalized their parodies of fashionable themes and old melodies, with humorous lyrics, such as “Carta a mamita” and “Ahorita va llover”, in the style of lower-middle-class Cubans, they made people laugh as hard as they could.
With the album “Yo pico un pan”, whose title is a piece that is a parody and onomatopoeia of those controversies between peasant poets, they gave Pototo and Filomeno their popularity with the Cuban public. The album was released for radio and jukebox in 1957 and won a gold record for the great sales it obtained.

Leopoldo Fernández played Pototo masterfully within the canons of traditional Cuban theater and stamped his artistic stamp on this character. Pototo, unlike Tres Patines, was the so-called Cuban jodedor (the chatterbox, the guy who jokes with people) and, like Tres Patines, had the fact of using puns, changing words, but not the same, and the Judge becomes Filomeno, and the duality of Pototo and Filomeno is created in theater, on television, and in cinema, in films like ¡Olé Cuba! (from 1957) and in nightclubs such as the Sierra cabaret and the Montmartre cabaret.
It is said that the nickname “Pototo” was given to Leopoldo by Alvaro de Villa for a radio series.
Some of Pototo and Filomeno’s recorded performances have evidently had very little publicity outside of Cuba, if not at all in some cases, such as the case of a TV program called “Los Ricachos”, where Pototo and Filomeno assumed the personalities of Juan Ramón and Domitilo, in the company of a stellar cast. At that time the program was broadcast in Cuba by CMQ TV.
These humorous actors so applauded and admired used to sing as a resource to reaffirm their worth, and even more, that they do so at the height of fame, is a fact that alone explains the substantial, definitive communion that exists between humor and the rhythms of Cuba.
From time to time in the Cuban newspapers of the time, mention was made of the Pototo and Filomeno show as it was a very popular space among the radio audience.
IN A PRESS ARTICLE about Pototo and Filomeno, published in DIARIO DE LA MARINA, June 26, 1955…it said:

Every night at half-past nine the attention of the national radio audience is centralized on the frequencies of the CMQ Circuit to enjoy the hilarious program “Pototo y Filomeno”, the public’s favorite show that in each transmission adds a new link to its long chain of hits.
“Pototo y Filomeno”, whose characters are synonymous with joy and good humor, has the artistic interpretation of two favorite comic stars of listeners: Leopoldo Fernández and Aníbal de Mar, who together with Mimí Cal and other figures from the CMQ Table delight of the public with its sparkling adventures, always full of healthy humor.
The libretti of “Pototo y Filomeno” bear the valuable signature of an author who needs no other introduction than his name: Álvaro de Villa. And the award-winning writer involves “Pototo and Filomeno” in the most unlikely situations that always reserve moments of incomparable grace for radio listeners throughout the island.

Pototo y Filomeno es el nombre de una producción antológica en donde los excelentes humoristas cubanos Leopoldo Fernández y Aníbal de Mar hacian gala de sus cualidades de canto y sketchs, con todo un juego de palabras y ocurrencias muy similares a las que hicieron famoso a La Tremenda Corte.
Allá en los años cuarenta, cuando todavía no llegaban las grabadoras a la isla de Cuba y los programas de radio se hacían en vivo, se podía escuchar a Pototo y Filomeno, que eran personajes encarnados precisamente por Leopoldo Fernández y Aníbal de Mar, que más adelante dieron vida a Tres Patines y a el Señor Juez respectivamente. Sus presentaciones posteriormente dieron inicio en un show de televisión en el año 1955 llamado “El Show de Pototo y Filomeno”. Este show fue creado por el productor Álvaro de Villa.
El escritor Arturo Liendo Lazcano fue quien a finales de los años 50 se encargó de escribir los libretos de este dúo humorístico.
Junto con el grupo musical “Orquesta Melodias del 40”, hicieron una grabación en 1957, en donde inmortalizaron sus parodias de temas de moda y viejas melodías, las cuales con letras jocosas, como “Carta a mamita” y “Ahorita va llover”, al estilo de los cubanos de clase media baja, hacían reír a más no poder.
Con el disco “Yo pico un pan”, al cual da título una pieza que es parodia y onomatopeya de esas controversias entre poetas guajiros, le dieron a Pototo y Filomeno su popularidad ante el público cubano. El disco salió para la radio y vitrola en 1957, y se hizo ganador de un disco de oro por las grandes ventas que obtuvo.

Leopoldo Fernández interpretaba a Pototo de manera magistral dentro de los cánones del teatro tradicional cubano y le estampó su sello artístico en este personaje. Pototo a diferencia de Tres Patines, era el llamado jodedor cubano (el cotorreador, el tipo del cotorreo, el que bromea con la gente) y tenía al igual que Tres Patines el hecho de utilizar el retruécano, el cambio de las palabras, pero no era igual, y el señor Juez pasa a ser Filomeno, y se crea la dualidad de Pototo y Filomeno en teatro, en televisión y en cine, en películas como ¡Olé Cuba! (de 1957) y en centros nocturnos como el cabaret Sierra y el cabaret Montmatre.
Se comenta que el apodo “Pototo” le fue impuesto a Leopoldo por Alvaro de Villa para una serie radial.
Algunas de las actuaciones grabadas de Pototo y Filomeno evidentemente han tenido muy poca divulgación fuera de Cuba, si no es que ninguna en algunos casos, tal es el caso de un programa de TV llamado “Los Ricachos”, en donde Pototo y Filomeno asumían las personalidades de Juan Ramón y Domitilo, en compañía de un elenco estelar. En aquel entonces el programa fue transmitido en Cuba por CMQ TV.
Estos actores humoristas tan aplaudidos y admirados acudían al canto como recurso para reafirmar su valía, y aun más, que lo hagan en el apogeo de la fama, es un hecho que explica por sí solo la sustancial, definitiva comunión que existe entre el humor y los ritmos de Cuba.
De cuando en cuando en los periódicos cubanos de la época se hacía mención sobre el show de Pototo y Filomeno pues era un espacio muy popular entre la radioaudiencia.
