Orquesta Riverside, también conocida en sus inicios como La Havana Riverside, es considerada como una de las Agrupaciones musicales mas famosas de todos los tiempos y fue fundada en La Habana en 1938, bajo el formato de jazz band por el compositor, violinista y director de orquesta Enrique González Mántici.
Llegó a tener gran popularidad en la Isla durante las décadas de 1940 y 1950 en las que se presentó en los principales circuitos comerciales de la Isla y realizó varias giras internacionales.
En las décadas de 1970 y 1980 del pasado siglo, animó interrumpidamente fiestas bailables en La Habana y fuera de la capital cubana e hizo giras a Colombia, Venezuela y Finlandia. Durante esa etapa mantuvo su habitual y frecuente presencia en la radio y la televisión. Tanto así, que ha sido considerada la orquesta cubana con más largo tiempo de permanencia y difusión ininterrumpida en los programas de medios de comunicación de la Isla.

HISTORIA DE “LA RIVERSIDE”…
La orquesta se fundó en el mes de agosto de 1938 cuando un grupo de jóvenes músicos cubanos se agruparon en el formato de una jazz band bajo la batuta del compositor, violinista y director Enrique González Mántici. El nombre escogido para la agrupación fue Havana Riverside.
A partir de ese año la popularidad de esta agrupación musical creció y se hizo presente en los medios de difusión y centros bailables y de entretenimiento existentes. La orquesta Riverside llegó a ser una de las más aclamadas de Cuba durante las décadas de 1940 y 1950 y realizó giras por Centro y Sudamérica con gran éxito, acompañando a figuras nacionales y extranjeras del canto.
Rápidamente surgió el interés de las disqueras por grabar sus éxitos. Firmas con renombre en la época como Puchito y Panart llevaron al acetato los éxitos de la orquesta, lo que contribuyó a aumentar su popularidad.
En la parte vocal varios cantantes a lo largo de la historia tuvieron mucho éxito en la orquesta, aunque la voz más relevante de todas fue la de Tito Gómez, quien por más de 30 años lideró esta cuerda.
Decenas de buenos músicos durante años desfilaron por su nomina. En cuanto a sus directores, después del fundador Enrique González Mantici, la Riverside fue liderada por Antonio Sosa, y en 1947 pasó a estar bajo la batuta del saxofonista Pedro Vila, quien supo en su etapa llevarla a planos más estelares. Posteriormente pasó a ser dirigida sucesivamente por Argelio González, el gran pianista y compositor Adolfo Guzmán y por Nelson Arocha Enseñat, pianista que imprimió su sello de gran arreglista. De manera ocasional la orquesta fue conducida varias veces por destacados músicos cubanos o extranjeros como Agustín Lara. En diferentes momentos la orquesta estuvo integrada por:
– Saxofones: René Ravelo, Gregorio Brenes, José Simpsonn, Raúl Nacianceno Mijares, Miguel Antuña Benítez y Roberto Arocha Morales
– Trompetas: Marcos Urbay, Enrique Osorio, José Martínez Daussac, Mario del Monte Cossío, Armando Galán Alfonso
– Trombones: Emilio Temprano y Roberto Morell del Campo
– Batería: Edgar Díaz, Sergio Núñez Molina y Rolando Piloto Álvarez
– Contrabajos: Orlando López (Cachito) y Roberto Martínez Capote
– Bongós: Baudilio Carbonell.
– Piano: Pedro Jústiz (Peruchín)
– Tumbadora: Pedro Soroa y Ángel Fernández de la Osa
– Guitarra: Carlos Montero Bello
– Cantantes: Alberto Ruiz, Tito Gómez y Orlando Montero Maldonado.

La Orquesta tuvo una presencia habitual entre las agrupaciones que animaban el cabaret Tropicana y el Parisienne del Hotel Nacional y el Caribe del Hotel Habana Libre.
RESURGIMIENTO
En el año 1993 por la dífícil situación económica del país la posibilidad de trabajo y contrato se vio disminuida y hubo una dispersión de muchos de sus músicos. Algunos marcharon a emprender otros proyectos personales, dentro y fuera del país y la orquesta Riverside se desintegró.
Raúl Nacianceno Miyares, quien fuera uno de sus puntales saxofonistas decidió rescatar la orquesta y tras años de arduo trabajo de rescate del repertorio y organización musical, emprendió la paciente tarea de ir transcribiendo a partir de grabaciones, pieza por pieza e instrumento por instrumento, respetando la tradición. Con ese trabajo listo presentó el poyecto al Ministerio de Cultura quien apoyó inmediatamente la idea y la orquesta se reconstituyó.
En la actualidad la Riverside la conforman jóvenes graduados las academias musicales cubanas bajo la dirección del Raúl Nacianceno. Los temas y arreglos son los mismos de antes y así se busca que permanezcan. Los temas de la orquesta se caracterizan por el respeto a los diferentes sectores sociales, especialmente la mujer, en contraposición con otras tendencias musicales contemporáneas que la denigran.

RESURGENCE
