HABLANDO DE LA SORPRENDENTE FLORA CUBANA Y EL DE OTRAS VARIEDADES. PHOTOS.

• -Hay más de 7000 especies de plantas en Cuba y que casi la mitad son endémicas (que solamente vive en un lugar determinado).
Cuba es el sitio del Caribe con mayor variedad de plantas y de endemismo como lo atestiguan todos los estudios.

• -Más de la tercera parte de nuestra flora endémica está en peligro de desaparición o han desaparecido desde la época de la conquista.
En los inicios del siglo XVI podía recorrerse la isla bajo los árboles, pero la tala indiscriminada, la deforestación por el ganado o por la introducción de cultivos han ido conduciendo a la perdida de especies, algunas para siempre.

• -En Cuba hay plantas carnívoras.
En nuestro país hay al menos 6 especies de plantas carnívoras del genero pinguicula, la más significativa, la p. Lignicola que es la única epifítica del mundo.

• -En nuestro país hay mas de 100 especies de palmas.
De estas 90 son endémicas, la más conocida es la palma real cuyo origen cubano esta en discusión.

• -Una de las especies de flores de mayor tamaño del mundo es oriunda de Cuba.
Se trata de la solandra grandiflora que puede medir 30 cms. en su corola.

• – La orquídea más pequeña del mundo sólo se encuentra en Cuba.
Es la pleurothallis shaferi cuya flor mide solo 2 mm.

• – La palma corcho originaria de Cuba es considerada una planta fósil y sólo se encuentra en Pinar del Río.
Solo existen alrededor de mil ejemplares y se considera de origen prehistórico.

• -Más de la mitad de las especies endémicas de nuestra flora se encuentran en las montañas de la antigua provincia de Oriente.
Las montañas de la Sierra Maestra y Sagua Baracoa forman el mayor sitio de endemismo del Caribe y allí se encuentra más de la mitad de nuestras plantas endémicas.

• -La mayoría de las plantas que más relacionamos con el paisaje cubano de nuestros recuerdos no son oriundas de Cuba.
En efecto, la caña de azúcar, el flamboyán, el mango, el plátano, los cafetales, el maíz y quizás la palma real no son oriundas de Cuba.

• -Una “comida típica cubana” apenas tiene componentes oriundos de Cuba.
Si tenemos en cuenta que la mayoría de los cultivos y animales de consumo son introducidos no tendríamos congrí o potajes, ni tostones, puerco asado o tamales, no habría cascos de guayaba con queso, no habría café y sólo nos quedaría la yuca hervida, pero sin mojo, y el tabaco para después.

• -La Mariposa, flor nacional (hedychium coronariun koenig) no es originaria de Cuba.
Es oriunda de las islas del Pacífico, Micronesia y Guam.

• -Most of the plants that we associate with the Cuban landscape of our memories are not native to Cuba.
Indeed, sugar cane, flamboyant, mango, banana, coffee plantations, corn, and perhaps the royal palm are not native to Cuba.

• -A “typical Cuban food” hardly has components native to Cuba.
If we take into account that most of the crops and animals for consumption are introduced, we would not have congrí or stews, nor tostones, roast pork or tamales, there would be no guava hulls with cheese, there would be no coffee and we would only have boiled yucca, but no mojo, and tobacco for later.

• -The Butterfly, a national flower (hedychium coronariun koenig) is not native to Cuba.
It is native to the Pacific Islands, Micronesia, and Guam.
