Fue el 11 de febrero de 1923 cuando nació en la ciudad de Nueva York Rosalía Lourdes Elisa Palet Bonavia, Rosita Fornés, como sería conocida popularmente, una cantante y actriz de cine cubanoamericana que se destacó por su carrera multifacética en la industria del entretenimiento de Cuba.
Armada de una versatilidad inusual, se desempeñó con maestría en el cine, la radio, la televisión, el cabaret, la revista musical, la zarzuela, la opereta, el drama clásico y la comedia ligera. En esos escenarios desplegó su universo creativo y edificó un homenaje a la vida y al arte.
“He recorrido casi el mundo entero, al menos una gran parte y siempre voy como artista cubana (…) así me conocen en todos los países que he visitado”, manifestó quien naciera en los Estados Unidos y sintió un sentido de pertenencia hacia Cuba en todos los ámbitos.
Rosita siempre abrigó la prosperidad y los buenos augurios como un rasgo de su personalidad. “Salud es lo que pido, y pido para todo el mundo, para todos los que me quieren y para todos los que están a mi alrededor”, confirmaba la vedette más importante de América Latina.
Valorar su impronta nos remite a recordar el paso por el cine en México, sus intervenciones en la radio y el mundo del espectáculo en Cuba, aquella aparición con el platillo volador en los predios de la actual Ciudad Deportiva o sus incursiones en la canción lírica, por citar algunos ejemplos.
Premio Nacional de Teatro (2001), de Televisión (2003) y de Música (2005) fue nombrada como Artista de Mérito de la Radio y la Televisión cubanas y fue reconocida, entre otras distinciones, con el trofeo de La Avellaneda, el trofeo al Mérito, otorgado en México, y la réplica del machete de Máximo Gómez.
Su legado permanece imperturbable frente a lo que Gabriel García Márquez calificara como la ignominia sacramental del tiempo. Quienes compartieron escena con ella confirman su calidez y valía como ser humano. Era incapaz de sostener miradas de envidia o rencor y tenía una habilidad innata para comunicarse con el público y apoderarse de su atención.
Desde ese profesionalismo honesto y acucioso hasta el carácter electrizante donde confluían la vedette, actriz y compañera ideal, el arte de Rosita Fornés fue, es y será un ejemplo para cualquier creador. Por ello muchos la consideran como la más completa de las artistas cubanas.
“No hizo otra cosa en su vida que trabajar con profesionalismo magistral para entregarle al público su encanto y glamour, atributos implícitos en su personalidad”, expresó el escritor cubano Miguel Barnet.
Él la calificó como un pueblo vestido de luz. Quienes le rinden homanaje en el centenario de su nacimiento pueden dar cuenta de ello.
Rosita falleció en Miami, Estados Unidos el 10 de junio de 2020.

It was February 11, 1923, when Rosalía Lourdes Elisa Palet Bonavia, Rosita Fornés, as she would be popularly known, was born in New York City, a Cuban-American singer and film actress who stood out for her multifaceted career in the Cuban entertainment industry.
Armed with unusual versatility, she has performed with mastery in film, radio, television, cabaret, musical revue, zarzuela, operetta, classical drama, and light comedy. She displayed her creative universe in these scenarios and built a tribute to life and art.
“I have traveled almost the entire world, at least a large part of it, and I always go as a Cuban artist (…) that is how they know me in all the countries I have visited,” said the person who was born in the United States and felt a sense of belonging to Cuba in all areas.
Rosita always harbored prosperity and good omens as a trait of her personality. “Health is what I ask for, and I ask for everyone, for everyone who loves me and for everyone around me,” confirmed the most important star in Latin America.
Assessing his imprint reminds us of his time in the cinema in Mexico, his interventions on the radio and the world of entertainment in Cuba, that appearance with the flying saucer on the grounds of the current Ciudad Deportiva or his forays into lyrical song, cite a few examples.
National Award for Theater (2001), Television (2003), and Music (2005) was named as Merit Artist of Cuban Radio and Television. It was recognized, among other distinctions, with the La Avellaneda trophy, the trophy for Merit, awarded in Mexico, and the replica of Máximo Gómez’s machete.
Her legacy remains imperturbable in the face of what Gabriel García Márquez described as the sacramental ignominy of time. Those who shared the scene with her confirm her warmth and worth of her as a human being. She was incapable of sustaining glances of envy or spite and she had an innate ability to communicate with the public and command their attention.
From that honest and diligent professionalism to the electrifying character where the star, actress and ideal companion came together, the art of Rosita Fornés was, is and will be an example for any creator. For this reason, many consider her the most complete of Cuban artists.
“She did nothing else in her life than work with masterful professionalism to deliver her charm and glamor to the public, implicit attributes in her personality,” said Cuban writer Miguel Barnet.
He described it as a people clothed in light. Those who pay homage to her on the centenary of her birth can give an account of it.
Rosita passed away in Miami, United States on June 10, 2020.
