Desde el primero de octubre pasado los guardacostas estadounidenses interceptaron en el mar a 6,202 cubanos, una cifra que superó el total de migrantes cubanos detenidos durante el año fiscal 2022 y es la mayor desde la crisis de los balseros de 1994.
LA GUARDIA COSTERA DE ESTADOS UNIDOS (USCG) detuvo en el mar a 6,202 balseros cubanos en los últimos seis meses, una cifra que superó el total de migrantes de la isla interceptados durante el año fiscal 2022.
Según un comunicado de la entidad federal difundido este domingo, desde el primero de octubre pasado -inicio del año fiscal 2023- fueron capturados en aguas del Estrecho de Florida 20 balseros más que los 6,182 detenidos en los 12 meses correspondientes al periodo anterior.
La cifra marca además la mayor cantidad de cubanos interceptados en el Estrecho de Florida desde la crisis de los balseros de 1994, cuando los guardacostas estadounidenses rescataron a unas 35 mil personas.
Asimismo, la USCG repatrió este domingo a otros 64 migrantes cubanos irregulares que intentaron llegar a Florida por la vía marítima y fueron detenidos en zonas cercanas a los cayos.
La cifra de balseros cubanos interceptados en altamar por la USCG en el último semestre es superior también a las de los años fiscales 2021 a 2016.
LA CRISIS MIGRATORIA CUBANA
El dato evidencia que aún está latente la crisis migratoria cubana y que la vía marítima sigue siendo una de las opciones más recurrentes, a pesar de las medidas de contención desplegadas por las autoridades federales y locales de EE.UU. para detener el flujo migratorio de cubanos.
El último martes, la USCG informó que había interceptado en seis meses a más de 6,100 cubanos, un número que ya rozaba a los detenidos en el mar durante el año fiscal 2022. Cinco días después ya los interceptados superan los de ese año.
Los cubanos regresados a la isla este domingo viajaron en el guardacostas Isaac Mayo, apunta la nota de la USCG. Parte de esos balseros fue detenido el martes último, aproximadamente a las 10 p.m., a unas 32 millas al sur de Key West.
Otro grupo fue interceptado el miércoles, al mediodía, a unas 26 millas al sur de Cayo Hueso. Ese mismo día, pero cerca de las tres de la tarde, la USCG detuvo otra embarcación con migrantes a unas 72 millas al sur de Key West.
“Nuestros socios de la Fuerza de Tarea de Seguridad Nacional-Sudeste están patrullando nuestras fronteras marítimas y las 24 horas del día, los siete días de la semana, por tierra, aire y mar para salvar vidas y evitar cruces ilegales”, alerta en el citado comunicado John Beal, del Distrito Siete de la USCG.
“Cualquiera que intente ingresar ilegalmente a los Estados Unidos por mar será rescatado y repatriado y aquellos que desembarquen serán detenidos y procesados para su expulsión”, puntualizó el oficial.

THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD (USCG) detained 6,202 Cuban rafters at sea in the last six months, a figure that exceeded the total number of migrants from the island intercepted during the fiscal year 2022.
According to a statement from the federal entity released this Sunday, since last October 1 -beginning of the fiscal year 2023- 20 more rafters were captured in the waters of the Florida Straits than the 6,182 detained in the 12 months corresponding to the previous period.
The figure also marks the highest number of Cubans intercepted in the Florida Straits since the rafters crisis of 1994 when the US Coast Guard rescued some 35,000 people.
Likewise, the USCG repatriated this Sunday another 64 irregular Cuban migrants who tried to reach Florida by sea and were detained in areas near the keys.
The number of Cuban rafters intercepted on the high seas by the USCG in the last semester is also higher than those of fiscal years 2021 to 2016.
THE CUBAN MIGRATION CRISIS
The data shows that the Cuban migration crisis is still latent and that the sea route continues to be one of the most recurrent options, despite the containment measures deployed by the US federal and local authorities to stop the migratory flow of Cubans.
Last Tuesday, the USCG reported that it had intercepted more than 6,100 Cubans in six months, a number that was already close to those detained at sea during fiscal year 2022. Five days later, those intercepted exceeded those of that year.
The Cubans who returned to the island this Sunday traveled on the Isaac Mayo coast guard, the USCG note points out. Part of those rafters was arrested last Tuesday, at approximately 10 p.m., some 32 miles south of Key West.
Another group was intercepted at noon Wednesday about 26 miles south of Key West. That same day, but around 3:00 p.m., the USCG stopped another migrant boat about 72 miles south of Key West.
“Our partners from the Homeland Security Task Force-Southeast are patrolling our maritime borders and 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by land, air, and sea to save lives and prevent illegal crossings,” alerted the cited statement John Beal, of the Seventh District of the USCG.
“Anyone attempting to enter the United States illegally by sea will be rescued and repatriated and those who go ashore will be detained and processed for removal,” the officer said.
