Yoenlis Feliciano Hernández aprovecha una escala en Panamá para escapar de la delegación oficial que regresaba a Cuba. El único medallista de oro cubano del Mundial de Boxeo de Taskent no regresó a la Isla.
EL BOXEADOR Yoenlis Feliciano Hernández, el único cubano que logró alzarse con el oro en el Campeonato Mundial de Boxeo recién celebrado en Taskent, Uzbekistán, abandonó la delegación oficial que regresaba a la Isla durante una escala en Panamá.
Así lo reportó el periodista deportivo Francys Romero, quien recordó: “Ya van 11 abandonos de atletas cubanos (karate, remo, hockey, boxeo) en 2023”.
Hernández tiene solo 25 años y acababa de convertirse en doble campeón mundial en los 75 kg tras ganar sus cinco peleas y mantener la supremacía conseguida hace dos años en la cita de Belgrado. En la pelea final, el pasado sábado, derrotó por 5-0 al brasileño Wanderlei Pereira.
La Federación Cubana de Boxeo (FCB) confirmó la fuga en una nota publicada por el sitio oficial Cubadebate: “Durante el regreso a la patria, en una escala en Panamá, el doble campeón mundial declinó continuar viaje hacia La Habana, lo que implica su ruptura con la selección nacional y con los compromisos competitivos contraídos para esta y venideras temporadas”, indicó.
Como siempre hacen las entidades oficiales, remató diciendo: “Se trata de una indisciplina grave y en esos términos lo informamos a la afición, seguros de que otros sabrán ocupar su lugar en el buque insignia del deporte cubano”.
El sitio oficial Jit, que no había reportado la fuga del púgil al cierre de este reporte, le había dedicado el lunes último un artículo al flamante campeón, en el que citó declaraciones suyas en las que reconoció: “He crecido como atleta, incorporando más recursos y aprovechando la experiencia acumulada desde que llegué al equipo nacional”.
También el lunes, Miguel Díaz-Canel lo había felicitado en Twitter, en una publicación donde lo incluyó entre otros deportistas que tuvieron éxito en competencias el fin de semana.
En 2022 el deporte de la Isla, que administra el Gobierno, sufrió un éxodo que afectó a la mayoría de sus disciplinas, en especial el béisbol y el atletismo.
Atendiendo a esa situación y a la necesidad de asegurar ingresos en divisas, el estatal Instituto Nacional de Deportes, Educación Física y Recreación (INDER) autorizó por vez primera en décadas la presentación de varias de sus principales figuras amateur en el profesionalismo.
Sin embargo, la fuga de Hernández deja en evidencia que ni siquiera esa decisión detendrá el deseo de labrarse una carrera por su cuenta de los boxeadores.

THE BOXER Yoenlis Feliciano Hernández, the only Cuban who managed to win gold in the World Boxing Championship recently held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, left the official delegation that was returning to the Island during a stopover in Panama.
This was reported by sports journalist Francys Romero, who recalled: “There are already 11 dropouts by Cuban athletes (karate, rowing, hockey, boxing) in 2023.”
Hernández is only 25 years old and had just become a double world champion at 75 kg after winning all five of his fights and maintaining the supremacy achieved two years ago at the Belgrade event. In the final fight, last Saturday, he defeated Brazilian Wanderlei Pereira 5-0.
The Cuban Boxing Federation (FCB) confirmed the leak in a note published by the official Cubadebate site: “During his return to his homeland, on a stopover in Panama, the double world champion declined to continue his trip to Havana, which implies his break with the national team and with the competitive commitments made for this and future seasons,” he said.
As official entities always do, he concluded by saying: “It is a serious indiscipline and in those terms we inform the fans, sure that others will know how to take their place in the flagship of Cuban sports.”
The official Jit site, which had not reported the fighter’s escape at the close of this report, had dedicated an article to the brand new champion last Monday, in which it cited his statements in which he acknowledged: “I have grown as an athlete, incorporating more resources and taking advantage of the experience accumulated since I joined the national team”.
Also on Monday, Miguel Díaz-Canel had congratulated him on Twitter, in a post where he included him among other athletes who had success in competitions over the weekend.
In 2022 the sport on the Island, which is administered by the Government, suffered an exodus that affected most of its disciplines, especially baseball and athletics.
In response to this situation and the need to ensure foreign currency income, the state National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) authorized for the first time in decades the presentation of several of its main amateur figures in professionalism.
However, Hernández’s escape makes it clear that even that decision will not stop boxers’ desire to carve out a career for themselves.
