Las raíces africanas de nuestra legendaria cantante Celia Cruz se remontan hasta la comunidad de Balanta, en Guinea Bissau, una de las mayores etnias que también ha dotado de una lengua a ese país, revelación que hizo la empresa African Ancestry, dedicada a la búsqueda ancestral a través de su ADN utilizando el de su sobrina Celia Cody.

En 1974, la inolvidable cantante cubana y Fania All Stars viajaron a la actual República Democrática del Congo. Ya. y como ensayo y preludio de lo que iba acontecer en este sueños hecho realidad de nuestra gran “Guarachera de Cuba” desde el avión armó la rumba que hizo vibrar al público con nuestra inolvidable ‘Guantanamera’.

CELIA Y EL VIAJE A SUS RAÍCES

El concierto de Fania All Stars en África tiene un apartado especial tanto para los fanáticos salseros como para sus propios protagonistas, quienes lo han dejado saber en conversaciones, entrevistas e incluso libros. Pero son los registros de video la mejor muestra de lo que vivió la agrupación durante aquella histórica visita.

El vuelo privado hacia el Zaire, hoy la actual República Democrática del Congo, iba repleto de artistas no solo de Fania All Stars, sino de las máximas estrellas del sello Motown, entre ellos el cantante de soul, funk y rock, James Brown, las Pointers Sisters, los Spinners, B.B. King, entre otros.

En tierra africana los esperaban los mejores artistas de ese continente para una serie de conciertos organizados como parte del evento ‘Zaire 74’, organizado por ese país y que además de presentar el encuentro de box entre Muhammad Alí y George Foreman, estaba destinado a promover la solidaridad racial y cultural.

RUMBA EN EL AVION

El vuelo partió de Nueva York hacia Kinshasa, capital del Zaire, y como era de esperarse fue muy largo. Hasta que llegó un momento en que todos se miraban las caras. Celia Cruz no sabía qué más hacer así que para salir del aburrimiento empezó a bromear y a cantar con Johnny Pacheco, director de Fania All Stars.

«Johnny sacó su flauta y yo me puse a cantar y a marcar el tiempo con un zapato. Los americanos se asombraron de nuestra energía«, recuerda. De pronto, Pupi Legarreta sacó su violín, alguien improvisó un güiro con un peine y una lata de cerveza, Ismael Miranda se puso a bailar y Nicky Marrero acompañó con las palmas. El avión era una rumba a más de 30 mil pies de altura que hasta el sonidista se puso a bailar.

Cuando llegaron a Kinshasa, los artistas fueron recibidos con limusinas y filas de gente por toda la ruta. Era un indicio de que iba a ser un gran espectáculo.

Llegado el día del concierto había una gran expectativa de los artistas para conocer la reacción de ese público que les había dado tantas muestras de cariño desde su llegada. El estadio Tata Raphael de Kinshasa, estaba pero repleto de gente. Se calcula que más de 80 mil personas.

Segun la misma Celia «Era un mar de negros gozando y bailando. Pacheco me dijo: ‘Celia, tú cántales Guantanamera, y vas a ver que te la vas a comer con ellos.’ Primero les canté Químbara, pero cuando entoné ‘Guantanamera, guajira guantanamera’, esa gente sí que se encendió. Aplaudieron, bailaron, cantaron y gozaron sabroso. La verdad es que a mí me sorprendió mucho saber que la Guantanamera había llegado hasta el África. ¡Qué cosa, mi madre!», cuenta Celia en su libro «Celia, mi vida», escrito en colaboración con la periodista Ana Cristina Reymundo.

Las imágenes de ese espectáculo en el que el propio Héctor Lavoe fue cargado por el público luego de cantar ‘Mi gente’, no solo fueron rescatadas en el DVD del concierto de Fania en Africa, bajo la dirección del cineasta León Gast, sino también en el documental que se hizo sobre esa visita con imágenes inéditas de aquella visita.

«Debo decir que, en general, en Zaire nos trataron muy bien. Hasta nos iban a organizar un safari para ver a los animales y todo, pero Pedro y yo teníamos un compromiso en Venezuela y por eso tuvimos que regresar. Además, le dije a Pedro: Mira, si quiero ver animales mejor me voy al zoológico del Bronx, porque no quiero andar brincando el jeep por ahí para ver si, de suerte, nos sale un león bien furioso. Nos montamos en el avión. Pero este fue un viaje inolvidable para nuestra gran artista Celia Cruz y que siempre recordó con cariño.
