José “Pepe” Sánchez fue un músico, cantante y compositor cubano. Es conocido como el padre de la trova y el creador del bolero cubano.
Pepe Sánchez nació en Santiago de Cuba el 19 de marzo de 1856. No tuvo formación musical académica alguna, ya que todo su conocimiento en materia musical era puramente intuitivo, pero enseñó admirablemente la ejecución de la guitarra, instrumento que tocaba con mucha maestría y cantaba muy bien, con voz de barítono. José Sánchez era sastre de profesión y demostraba poseer talento extraordinario para sus ocupaciones: la música y la sastrería.
Sánchez de sastre, fue luego copropietario de una mina de cobre, y representante en Santiago de Cuba de una fábrica de telas en Kingston, Jamaica. Se movía en círculos de clase alta y media en Santiago a pesar de ser mulato; su trabajo como empresario y músico le trajo reconocimiento y aceptación.

A finales del Siglo XIX, el género trovadoresco se afianzaba cada vez más en el gusto popular, y tras la evolución que tiene lugar en el mundo sonoro de la época, integrado por aires europeos mezclados con ritmos africanos, había surgido la canción criolla, oriunda de la región oriental de la isla; en la ciudad de Santiago de Cuba.

Los cantadores o cantores les otorgaron su sello particular, creando un movimiento musical con características muy bien definidas al que se le llamó académicamente neorromanticismo popular cubano. Estos trovadores o troveros, que así también se les llamaba, crearon lo que hoy conocemos como trova tradicional cuya cubanía estaba en sus letras y en determinada cadencia que al tomar fuerza, le otorgaron a nuestro cancionero su identidad nacional.
En esa época, Pepe Sánchez, acompañado de su guitarra, entonaba sus canciones en serenatas, tan en moda en aquellos años en su ciudad natal; también en las reuniones que se hacían regularmente en las casas de los creadores-cantores incluyendo la suya, reuniones a las que se les llamó peñas. En estas peñas, que tenían lugar después de concluir las labores cotidianas, como obreros o artesanos, estos creadores, cantantes y guitarristas se acoplaban indistintamente formando dúos, tríos o cuartetos, creando o interpretando las canciones, compartiendo en fraterna emulación musical.
En este ambiente surge el primer bolero de que se tiene conocimiento y una referencia precisa en Cuba, específicamente allí en Santiago, compuesto por Pepe Sánchez, el maestro como también le llaman, y se titula Tristeza, pieza que estructuralmente comprendía dos períodos musicales de 16 compases cada uno, separados por un pasaje instrumental que se ejecutaba melódicamente en la guitarra, al que le llamaban pasacalle.
Pepe Sánchez está considerado como el pionero en la definición de los rasgos del bolero. Entonces no había una forma precisa en cuanto a la estructuración tonal en la que se componía la canción; podía ser en cuanto al modo mayor o menor o combinando ambas modalidades.
Por su talento, ejercicio y vocación, Pepe Sánchez fue a su vez, maestro de importantes figuras del quehacer musical cubano, especialmente de Sindo Garay, a quien conoció de niño y puso en las manos su primera guitarra y promotor de cuanto evento artístico musical se ofrecía en la ciudad santiaguera, fue además un patriota amigo de muchos mambises y de Guillermón Moncada, a quien le compuso un bolero.
Fue director y fundador del famoso Quinteto de Trovadores Santiagueros, integrado por Pepe Figarola (primera voz), Bernabé Ferrer y Luis Felipe Portés (segundas voces), Emiliano Blez (guitarrista acompañante) y Pepe Sánchez (primera guitarra).
De sus obras musicales destacan, “Me entristeces, mujer” (popularmente conocida con el nombre de “Tristeza”), “Pobre artista”, “Rosa I”,”Rosa II”,”Rosa III”, “Elvira”, “Cuando la expresión de tu canto”, “Cuba, mi patria querida”, “Caridad”, “Adán y Eva”, “Esperanza”, “Redondilla, “Ángeles”, “Naturaleza”, “Himno a Maceo”, etc.

La canción “Me entristeces, mujer” (compuesta en el año 1883) está formalmente conceptuada como la cuna del bolero latinoamericano. En este sentido, parece ser que el título original de dicha pieza era el de “Tristeza”, pero debido a que a la hora de su registro ya existía otra composición inscrita con el mismo nombre, finalmente se decidió por titularla así.

MUERTE DE PEPE SÁNCHEZ
Pepe tenía algo de experiencia en el teatro bufo, pero no tenía formación formal en música. Con notable talento natural, componía números en su cabeza y nunca los anotaba. Como resultado, la mayoría de estos números ahora se han perdido para siempre, aunque sobreviven unas dos docenas porque amigos y discípulos los escribieron. Su primer bolero, Tristezas, aún hoy se recuerda. También creó jingles publicitarios antes de que naciera la radio. Fue modelo y maestro de los grandes trovadores que lo sucedieron: Sindo Garay, Rosendo Ruiz, Manuel Corona y Alberto Villalón.
