Se trata de una serie de cavernas llenas de encantos naturales, que atraen la curiosidad y el interés de los aficionados a la espeleología, y a cualquiera. Cerca de la ciudad de Matanzas, sobre una meseta marina que rodea la ciudad por el sur. Junto con Pan de Matanzas, El Valle del Yumurí y la Playa de Varadero, las Cuevas de Bellamar son uno de los símbolos de esta provincia.
Algunos investigadores plantearon que la cueva formaba parte de la Bahía de Matanzas pero, a consecuencia de los movimientos de las capas del suelo, esta zona emergió formando terrazas marinas que se advierten en los suelos de la ciudad de Matanzas y sus alrededores.
El sistema cavernario que rodea a la ciudad de Matanzas está formado por cuevas que asumen diferentes características, van desde kilómetros hasta pequeños huecos angostos inaccesibles al hombre. Comenzó a formarse hace unos 300 mil años.
Estos accidentes geográficos en distintas épocas sirvieron de refugio, primero al hombre primitivo y luego a los mambises, quienes se esconden de la lluvia, del frío o acechan en el interior del enemigo. En ese sentido las cintas matanceras han jugado un papel importante en la historiografía local.
MISTERIOS DE LAS CUEVAS DE BELLAMAR
Desciendes por las escaleras de mampostería desgastadas por el agua y el clima y parece no tener fin. Ciento cincuenta y nueve peldaños más abajo, tras sentir un calor considerable, aunque la temperatura media anual es de 26 grados centígrados, te recibe el manto de Colón, una estalactita de 12 metros de altura y más de 30 siglos de vida.
En el Templo Gótico, un salón de corte de 80 metros de largo y 25 de ancho le da la bienvenida al lugar, mostrando algunas de sus formaciones rocosas más impresionantes: el huerto de las zanahorias, la ermita de los doce apóstoles y Mamerta Doña.
Pero la cueva se extiende hacia el este y el oeste, con una extensión que supera las 780 hectáreas, con 23 km de túneles, e incluso cámaras totalmente inundadas. Otras de sus cavidades son la Galería de los dos lagos, la de los enanos, la norte y el Salón de las esponjas, al este del Salón Gótico. Las cuevas de Bellamar, ubicadas en lo alto de una colina a unos cinco kilómetros del centro histórico de la ciudad, son famosas en el mundo por sus formaciones especiales, desechos marinos, estimados en más de 25 millones de años, su flora característica y sus leyendas.
Como un pacto de amor eterno descienden del techo de la cueva estalactitas y estalagmitas que se dirigen a toda prisa para encontrarse desde el suelo, formando columnas. Estas caprichosas formaciones han tapizado la cueva, junto con la helictita, todo ello revestido de una superficie de Cristal, de aspecto transparente y brillante. Fue descubierto, por casualidad, en febrero de 1861, al sur de la Bahía de Matanzas.
El baño de la Americana encierra una singular leyenda sobre un veraneante americano que se perdió en ese sitio cuando decidió refrescar su cuerpo en las frías y cristalinas aguas. Sin embargo, el hecho no ha sido confirmado, y desde entonces miles de personas han seguido bañándose.
Diseñado por la naturaleza y bautizado por el hombre, túnel del amor, la capilla de los doce apóstoles, la Garganta del Diablo, el paso de la lluvia, el Salón de las Nieves y el templo son a San Pedro. Angostas galerías horizontales conforman los 9 niveles de la caverna matancera estudiada hasta el momento.
El carso, de aproximadamente 25 mil años de antigüedad, está compuesto en su mayor parte por rocas calizas y margas, con un alto contenido de arcilla. Para los conocedores de la espeleología, las cuevas de Bellamar están consideradas como un potencial laboratorio para el estudio de la cristalografía subterránea, encontrándose en sus galerías una amplia representación de formas cristalinas de singular belleza.
FAUNA DE LA REGIÓN
La antigüedad de sus formaciones permitió que sirvieran de refugio a la fauna cuaternaria de la región, hecho confirmado por el hallazgo en las excavaciones de restos de animales prehistóricos. Declarado monumento nacional, figura en la lista indicativa de propuestas para optar por salir de la categoría de patrimonio mundial, por la mágica fascinación que atrae a los turistas locales y foranos.
Las cuevas de Bellamar es una formación geomicrobiológica legendaria que se incluye entre las exclusivas naturales de la provincia de Matanzas. Mezcla de historia, leyendas y valores indiscutibles, permanece incólume cual fiel testigo de siglos. Un paraíso subterráneo que destaca la autenticidad de sus formaciones cristalinas que desafían a la imaginación ya la naturaleza misma.
Muchas salas de cuevas están reservadas solo para trabajos científicos porque su acceso se vuelve extremadamente difícil y requiere el uso de equipos especializados en la actividad. Hay dos cavernas difíciles de nombre El Jíbaro y el Jarro.
