La Presa Hanabanilla es una presa de terraplén en el río Hanabanilla cerca del pueblo de El Salto del Hanabanilla en la provincia de Villa Clara, Cuba.
El objetivo de la presa es proporcionar agua para riego y usos municipales y generar energía hidroeléctrica.
La presa contiene un embalse de 286.000.000 m3 (232.000 acres⋅ft) y la central eléctrica, ubicada cerca de su base, tiene una capacidad instalada de 43 MW.
Es la central hidroeléctrica más grande del país. Cerca del extremo sur del embalse se encuentra la presa Jibacoa, una presa auxiliar, que cierra un valle para crear el gran embalse existente.
Gracias al agua almacenada en una presa, Hanabanilla cuenta con la única central hidroeléctrica de Cuba. La obra se inició hacia 1952, a cargo de una empresa norteamericana. Su construcción duró aproximadamente un año. Hacia 1963 operaba con dos unidades de origen checo y a partir de 1966 ya contaba con tres unidades.
Ubicada a poco más de 13 km del municipio de Manicaragua, la central hidroeléctrica Robustiano León mantiene su funcionalidad desde hace más de seis décadas. Se alimenta de las aguas del Lago Hanabanilla, genera electricidad, regula la frecuencia secundaria del Sistema Electroenergético Nacional y el voltaje de la región central. Si es necesario, puede suministrar electricidad como sistema aislado a los municipios vecinos.
HANABANILLA Y SUS OTRAS BELLEZAS.
Sin embargo, antes de que existiera esta instalación, el lugar ya estaba bendecido con historias mágicas. En el macizo de Guamuhaya se habla, a modo de leyenda, de Atanasia, una mujer que vivía en una cueva con sus hijos, en los años 50 del siglo pasado.
Según el testimonio de Ángel Rodríguez Quintana, vecino del lugar, citado por la Agencia Cubana de Noticias, ese espacio que funcionó como vivienda, “siempre brilló por el orden y la limpieza y aunque no tenía divisiones que delimitaran las habitaciones, ella Había distribuido sus pocos muebles de tal manera que definía el uso de cada espacio, como si fuera una casa común”.
Además, este tipo de lago intramontano, único en su tipo en el país, es protagonista de la leyenda que da nombre al lugar. Como dicen, la palabra Hanabanilla significa ‘cesta de oro’ y así la llamaban una de las hijas del cacique Arimao, jefe de una de las tribus que allí habitaban cuando llegaron los españoles, súbdito muy fuerte y valiente, que pronto se convirtió en líder de la resistencia contra los íberos.
Su hija heredó su tenacidad y fuerza de carácter. Quizás por eso, muchos habitantes del lugar dicen que hasta su rostro se refleja en las aguas del lago en épocas de crecida.
Cuando pases por allí, hacia la “Canasta Dorada”, podrás ver el rostro de la leyenda.

The Hanabanilla Dam is an embankment dam on the Hanabanilla River near the village of El Salto del Hanabanilla in Villa Clara Province, Cuba.

It is the largest hydroelectric power station in the country. Near the southern end of the reservoir is Jibacoa Dam, an auxiliary dam, which closes off one valley to create the existing large reservoir.
Thanks to the water stored in a dam, Hanabanilla has the only hydroelectric plant in Cuba. The work began around 1952, in charge of a North American company.
