Junto a cantantes tan reconocidos como Vicente Feliú, Silvio Rodríguez y Pablo Milanés una voz y una guitarra se alzaron en la figura de Noel Nicola, autor de canciones imprescindibles de la música cubana.
Noel Jorge Nicola Reyes, apodado “el tranquilo de la Nueva Trova” y conocido artisticamente como Noel Nicola, nació en Santa Clara, el 7 de octubre de 1946 en el seno de una familia de músicos. Su padre era profesor de la Escuela Cubana de Guitarra y su madre una destacada violinista. Por tanto, sus primeros contactos con la música fueron “en familia”.
Aprendió como muchos trovadores y cantautores de su época de forma autodidacta y acompañaba sus textos con la guitarra. Su talento para hacer poesía, melodías y música eran totalmente innatos.
Como hemos arriba mencionado, Noel se inició musicalmente de la mano de su padre, el celebérrimo guitarrista Isaac Nicola Romero y su señora madre doña Eva Reyes, quien fuera violinista y cantante de la Sinfónica Nacional. A los 13 años de edad ya Noel componía canciones y se presentaba en festivales de varias agrupaciones musicales.
Posteriormente en el complemento de sus estudios se convirtió en discípulo de maestros como Sergio Vitier, Federico Smith, Argeliers León, Juan Elósegui y Leo Brouwer cuando hace parte de los talleres del Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC.
En la década de los sesenta vino con sus primeras canciones, y con ellas los primeros pasos de su trayectoria profesional dirigiendo e integrando el Combo Los Kendy y después el Grupo Seis TK que combinaba en su repertorio música cubana con las sonoridades que dejaba el cole tazo de la nueva ola y el rock & roll. En aquel entonces tenía un repertorio conformado fundamentalmente por canciones de Charles Aznavour, Los Beatles, Fausto Popetti, y cantantes de la música tradicional cubana.
Noel trabajó como auxiliar investigativo del Instituto de Etnología y Folklore de la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba, y en el albor del Movimiento de la Nueva Trova representó a Cuba en importantes Festivales de la canción, recorriendo países de Latinoamérica y Rusia junto a otros soldados de la nueva trova como Santiago Feliú, Donato Poveda y Silvio Rodríguez.
También se debe señalar que Noel Nicola musicalizó poemas del peruano César Vallejo, y en su obra abundaba el gesto satírico contra la burocracia, el interés personal, la cursilería, la hipocresía, etc. Algunas de sus obras son, los boleros “Sueño o momento”, “Tú eres mi música”, “Si quieres recordarme” y “Huyendo del amor”; las congas “Payasos payaseando” y “Ya verán”; la canción “¡Cuba va!” y “Es más, te perdono”; la guajira “Comenzó el día”; los sones “Se fue a bolina”, “Radiografía de una apariencia” y el “Son oscuro”. A su muerte, ostentaba reconocimientos como la Medalla “Alejo Carpentier” y la Órden “Félix Varela”.
A él pertenecen canciones clásicas del repertorio cubano tales como: “Ya están las semillas”, “Con las letras, la luz”, “Soy y no soy el mismo”, “Lejanías”, “Detrás de la guitarra “, ” Así como soy”, “Problema político sexual”, “Cuba sí”, en coautoría con Silvio Rodriguez y Pablo Milanés, uno de los fundadores de la llamada Nueva Trova Cubana. También tuvo un trabajo interesante al musicalizar poemas de José Martí y César Vallejo.
En la televisión, las canciones tema de ‹‹El eco de las piedras››, ‹‹Pasión y prejuicio››, todas las canciones ‹‹Hermanos (1989)›› y ‹‹Los Papaloteros (1991)›› contaron con composición e interpretación de Noel Nicola. En esa última, además de su aporte musical, participó como actor ”invisible”, es decir, aparecía y desaparecía instantáneamente.
En el verano de 2005, el 7 de julio, la musica cubana perdió a Noel Nicola que falleció en la ciudad de La Habana, víctima de cáncer pulmonar.
