Osvaldo Farrés fue un destacado compositor cubano mejor conocido por haber escrito las canciones populares “Quizás, Quizás, Quizás”, “Acércate Más”, “En El Mar” y “Tres Palabras”.
Corria el año de 1947 y recordemos cuando la cantante mexicana Chela Campos pide al cubano Osvaldo Farrés que componga una canción para ella. Farrés se niega, vacila, no se siente suficientemente motivado. Pero la mexicana no se da por vencida. Insiste. Vamos, Maestro, si con tres palabras se hace una canción, le dice, y Farrés acepta el reto.
Compone la canción que Chela Campos le pide y la titula precisamente así: Tres palabras.
Ya para entonces Farrés había entrado en Hollywood por la puerta ancha cuando en 1940 su bolero Acércate más fue el tema de una película que interpretaron Esther Williams y Van Johnson.
En realidad, Osvaldo Farrés no leía música ni tocaba el piano. Conocía, al igual que Agustín Lara e Irving Berlín los rudimentos de la música, pero no podía llevar sus inspiraciones al papel pautado. Nacido en Quemado de Güines, en el centro de la Isla, Farrés era un magnífico dibujante y un publicista aventajado cuando descubrió que tenía el don de componer bellas melodías.
CARRERA ARTISTICA
Halló esa veta por casualidad. En 1937 preparaba con cinco muchachas, en un estudio de CMQ Radio, una promoción de la cerveza Polar cuando un locutor comentó: Ahí está Farrés con sus cinco hijas… En el acto, Farrés se comprometió a escribir una guaracha con ese título. Al cabo, no serían cinco hijas, sino cinco hijos: Pedro, Pablo, Chucho, Jacinto y José que no tardarían en ser conocidos en toda Cuba luego de que Miguelito Valdés montara la pieza con la orquesta Casino de la Playa.
«Jamás pensé en convertirme en un compositor. Ni la canción ni la música entraban en mis planes, y mucho menos imaginé que llegaría a vivir de ellas», dijo en una ocasión. Y logró hacerlo sin embargo pues no demoraría en convertirse en el compositor de moda en Cuba, un hombre capaz de trocar en éxito cuanto escribía.
LA MELODIA PARA ENAMORADOS
Toda una vida pasó a ser un himno para los enamorados. Tres palabras apareció en una cinta de Walt Disney. Quizás, quizás, quizás la cantó Sarita Montiel en la película Bésame. En verdad, la Montiel interpretó varias canciones de Farrés en seis de los filmes que protagonizó. Nat King Cole dejó también su versión de Quizás. No me vayas a engañar fue uno de los grandes éxitos de Antonio Machín. Obras de Osvaldo Farrés se utilizaron también en películas argentinas y mexicanas. Otra pieza suya, emblemática, es Madrecita, compuesta en 1954. Si Toda una vida fue, como ya dijimos, el himno de los enamorados, Madrecita se cantaba hasta la fatiga en el Día de las Madres. Farrés la compuso en homenaje a la suya. Pero la buena señora nunca pudo oírla porque era sorda como una tapia.

«I never thought about becoming a composer. Neither song nor music were part of my plans, much less did I imagine that he would make a living from them,” he once said. And he managed to do it nevertheless because he would not take long to become the fashionable composer in Cuba, a man capable of turning everything he wrote into success.
THE MELODY FOR LOVERS
A lifetime became an anthem for lovers. Three words appeared in a Walt Disney film. Maybe, maybe, maybe Sarita Montiel sang it in the movie Bésame. In fact, Montiel performed several songs by Farrés in six of the films in which she starred. Nat King Cole also left his version of Maybe. Don’t fool me was one of Antonio Machín’s greatest hits. Works by Osvaldo Farrés were also used in Argentine and Mexican films. Another emblematic piece of his is Madrecita, composed in 1954. If Una vida was, as we already said, the anthem of lovers, Madrecita was sung to the point of exhaustion on Mother’s Day. Farrés composed it in homage to his own.
