Olga Guillot, cantante cubana conocida como la “reina del bolero”, nació el 9 de octubre de 1922, era natural de la ciudad cubana de Santiago.
Hija de artistas catalanes que se mudaron a Cuba, Olga Guillot y su familia se mudaron a La Habana, Cuba cuando era una niña pequeña. Cuando era adolescente, ella y su hermana, Ana Luisa, actuaron como el “Dúo Hermanitas Guillot”.
No fue hasta 1945 que se descubrió su talento como cantante de boleros, cuando Facundo Rivero, un hombre influyente en la escena musical cubana de la época, la escuchó cantar por primera vez y la ayudó a hacer su debut como cantante profesional en un famoso club nocturno de La Habana. Poco después, Guillot conoció a Miguelito Valdés, quien la llevó a la ciudad de Nueva York, donde Guillot pudo grabar su primer álbum con el sello Decca.
OLGA GUILLOT SE VA A MÉXICO
En 1948, Guillot viajó a México, donde se estableció como cantante y actriz internacional, apareciendo en varias películas y grabando su segundo álbum. En México, Guillot comenzó a gozar de gran popularidad por primera vez en su carrera.
En 1954, grabó su canción “Miénteme”, que se convirtió en un éxito en toda América Latina y le valió tres premios consecutivos en su país natal, Cuba, como mejor cantante femenina de Cuba.
1958 resultó ser un año importante para Guillot, ya que realizó una gira por Europa por primera vez, actuando en Italia, Francia, España y Alemania. Cantó junto a la legendaria Édith Piaf en un concierto celebrado en Cannes.
Olga Guillot mantuvo una casa en Cuba mientras viajaba por el mundo, junto con su casa en México. Pero Guillot se opuso al régimen de Fidel Castro y en 1961 decidió abandonar Cuba para siempre y establecerse en Venezuela. Poco tiempo después, abandonó Venezuela y México fue su único país de residencia permanente.
Mientras tanto, siguió de gira por todo el mundo, cantando en lugares como Israel, Japón y Hong Kong. En 1963, Guillot recibió la Palma de Oro como “mejor cantante de boleros de América Latina”. Recibió el premio en Hollywood, California. Guillot cantó en 1964 en el famoso Carnegie Hall de Nueva York, convirtiéndose en la primera artista latina en cantar allí.
Guillot continuó de gira durante los siguientes cuarenta años, lanzando más de cincuenta álbumes y ganando numerosos premios por sus logros en el mundo de la música. Era muy buena amiga de Celia Cruz, a quien a menudo se refería como “(su) hermana”. Cuando Cruz murió de cáncer, Guillot quedó muy afligida por la pérdida de su amiga íntima y compatriota. Ella era la madrina del icónico cantante José José. Guillot vivió principalmente en México y tenía otra casa en Miami Beach, Florida.
SU MUERTE
El 12 de julio de 2010, falleció a los 87 años de edad a causa de un infarto en la ciudad de Miami Beach. Le sobrevive una hija, Olga Maria Touzet-Guillot, fruto de su relación con el pianista y compositor René Touzet.

Olga Guillot a Cuban singer who was known as the ‘queen of bolero’ was born on October 9, 1922 she was a native of the Cuban city of Santiago.
Daughter of Catalan artists who moved to Cuba, Olga Guillot and her family moved to Havana, Cuba when she was a small child. As a teenager, she and her sister, Ana Luisa, performed as the “Duo Hermanitas Guillot”.
It wasn’t until 1945 that her talent as a bolero singer was discovered, when Facundo Rivero, an influential man in the Cuban music scene of the era, heard her sing for the first time and helped her make her professional singing debut at a famous Havana night club. Soon after, Guillot met Miguelito Valdés, who took her to New York City, where Guillot was able to record her first album with the Decca label.
OLGA GUILLOT GO TO MEXICO
Guillot traveled to Mexico in 1948. There, she established herself as an international singer and actress, appearing in various films and making her second album. In Mexico, Guillot began to enjoy much popularity for the first time in her career.
In 1954, she recorded her song “Miénteme” (“Lie to Me”) which became a hit across Latin America and earned her three consecutive awards back home in Cuba as Cuba’s best female singer.
1958 proved to be an important year for Guillot, as she toured Europe for the first time, performing in Italy, France, Spain and Germany. She sang alongside the legendary Édith Piaf at a concert held in Cannes.
Olga Guillot kept a house in Cuba as she travelled around the world, along with her house in Mexico. But Guillot opposed Fidel Castro’s regime, and in 1961 she decided to leave Cuba for good and establish herself in Venezuela. Not long after that, she left Venezuela, making Mexico her only permanent country of residence.
Meanwhile, she kept touring around the world, singing in places such as Israel, Japan and Hong Kong. In 1963, Guillot was given the Golden Palm award as “best bolero singer of Latin America”. She received the award in Hollywood, California. Guillot sang in 1964 at New York’s famed Carnegie Hall, becoming the first Latin artist to sing there.
Guillot continued touring for the next forty years, releasing over fifty albums and winning numerous awards for her achievements in the music world. She was very good friends with Celia Cruz, whom she often referred to as “(her) sister”. When Cruz died from cancer, Guillot was very bereaved over the loss of her close friend and compatriot. She was the godmother of the iconic singer José José. Guillot lived mainly in Mexico and had another home on Miami Beach, Florida.
HER DEATH
On July 12, 2010, she died of an infarction at the age of 87 in the city of Miami Beach. She is survived by one daughter, Olga Maria Touzet-Guillot, born from her relationship with pianist and composer, René Touzet.
