Ibeyi es un dúo musical franco-cubano compuesto por las hermanas gemelas Lisa-Kaindé Díaz y Naomi Diaz. El dúo canta en inglés y yoruba, una lengua nigeriana que sus antepasados hablaron antes de ser traídos a Cuba por los españoles para ser esclavizados en el siglo XVIII. Aunque Lisa es la voz principal, Naomi toca instrumentos de percusión peruanos/cubanos tradicionales cajón y tambor Batá , Mientras que Lisa también toca el piano.
En el idioma yoruba, Ibeyi (Ìbejì) se traduce como “gemelas”.
Su música tiene elementos de yoruba, francés y afro-cubano, y fusiona jazz con ritmos, muestras con instrumentos tradicionales.
Las gemelas nacieron en París pero vivieron en La Habana los dos primeros años de su vida. Luego se trasladaron a París para continuar su educación. Visitaban Cuba todos los años en vacaciones, pero fueron criados principalmente en París, donde actualmente residen.
Su padre fue el famoso percusionista cubano Anga Díaz, que recibió un Grammy por su trabajo con el grupo de jazz latino Irakere y también fue miembro del Buena Vista Social Club participando con Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González y Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz alias Compay Segundo . A su muerte en 2006, Naomi, entonces de 11 años, aprendió a tocar su instrumento de firma, el cajón.
Juntas, las hermanas estudiaron canciones folklóricas de Yoruba. Su madre es la cantante franco-venezolana, Maya Dagnino, quien sirve como su manager y alentó la composición de Lisa-Kainde. En 2013, firmaron con la discográfica XL Recordings.
Hasta el presente triunfantes en sus meteórica carrera musical.
INFLUENCIAS
Además de su padre Anga Díaz, el dúo cuenta con influencias de Frank Ocean, James Blake y King Krule. En sus presentaciones en vivo, han interpretado Better in Tune with the Infinite del rapero Jay Electronica y otras canciones.
Sus grabaciones también muestran una fuerte conexión espiritual con sus raíces yorubas, al igual que el nombre y los temas. También rinden homenaje a la santería, un sincretismo practicado por muchos afrocubanos y muchos cubanos en general.

Ibeyi is a French-Cuban musical duo consisting of twin sisters Lisa-Kaindé Diaz and Naomi Diaz. The duo sings in English and Yoruba, – a Nigerian language their ancestors spoke before being brought to Cuba by the Spanish to be made slaves in the 1700s – though Lisa’s is the lead voice, Naomi plays traditional Peruvian/Cuban percussion instruments cajón and Batá drum, while Lisa also plays piano.
In the Yoruba language, Ibeyi (Ìbejì) translates as “twins”.
Their music has elements of Yoruba, French and Afro-Cuban, and fuses jazz with beats, samples with traditional instruments.
The twins were born in Paris but lived in Havana the first two years of their lives. Then, they moved to Paris to pursue their education.
They often visited Cuba yearly on holiday, but were primarily raised in Paris, where they currently reside.
Their father was the famed Cuban percussionist, Anga Díaz, who has received a Grammy for his work with the Latin jazz band Irakere and was also a member of Buena Vista Social Club played with Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González and Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz aka Compay Segundo. On his death in 2006, Naomi, then aged 11, learned to play his signature instrument the cajón.
Together, the sisters studied Yoruba folk songs. Their mother is French-Venezuelan singer, Maya Dagnino, who serves as their manager and encouraged Lisa-Kainde’s songwriting. In 2013, they signed to the record label, XL Recordings.

INFLUENCES
As well as their father Anga Díaz, the duo claims Frank Ocean, James Blake, and King Krule among their influences. In live shows, they have covered rapper Jay Electronica’s Better in Tune with the Infinite and others.
Their recordings also show a strong and spiritual connection to their Yoruba roots, as do the name and themes. They also pay tribute to Santería, a syncretism practiced by many Afro-Cubans, and many Cubans in general.
