Cuban artists have once again made news, as the 2018 Latin Grammy nominees will be announced this Thursday, whose awards will be held on November 15 in Las Vegas. Resident musicians inside and outside Cuba will be contenders in several categories, although none classified in the most significant and media sections, such as Album, Recording and Song of the Year, reported the Grammy Awards Academy.

The so-called Tropical Music monopolized the largest number of Cuban aspirants to the golden gramophone. Omara Portuondo and the Septeto Santiaguero depart a priori with good options in the category of Best Traditional Tropical Album.

The diva of the Buena Vista Social Club will have on the album Omara always, of the Egrem -and already recognized with a Special Award Cubadisco 2018-, its presumed trump card, while the Septet will seek its second Latin Grammy with A mí qué. Tribute to the Cuban classics (Los Canarios Music), in which he shares the limelight with the Dominican José Alberto “El Canario”.

However, they will have important competitors in the Panamanian Rubén Blades (Medoro Madera-Rubén Blades Productions), the Mexicans of La Sonora Santanera (The party continues-Sony Music) and the Venezuelan Maria Rivas (Motives-Angel Falls Artists Inc.).

Another section with two aspirants of the Island is the Best tropical fusion album. In him they will look for the prize Aymée Nuviola, with the album Like ring to the finger (Top Stop Music), and the cantautor Diego Gutiérrez with Palante the mambo! (Egrem), both also nominated to Cubadisco. His rivals will be the Dominican Manny Cruz (Supernatural-Penluis Music), the Puerto Rican Sheila King (Supernova-Sheila King Publishing) and the Colombian Safara (Cucucuprá, cuprá-Star Arsis Entertainment Group).

For his part, Alexander Abreu and Habana D’Primera seek to consecrate Cantor del Pueblo (Páfata Productions) as the Best Salsa Album, against records by Puerto Rican Charlie Aponte, Víctor Manuelle and Pete Perignon, and the Dominican group Chiquito Team Band .

Meanwhile, Jorge Luis Piloto, famed Cuban composer based in the United States, aspires twice to the Best Tropical Song with “Me enamoro más de ti”, performed by Peruvian Tony Succar and Puerto Rican Jean Rodríguez -also co-authors of the theme- and with “Enamórate bailando”, in which Gilberto Santa Rosa and Septeto Acarey join, made up of musicians from Cuba and Peru and led by Cuban bassist Reynier Pérez.
 
This time there will be born on the Island in the different categories of Urban Music, but in Alternative Music, for which best album Telmary contends with Fuerza Arará, from Colibrí Productions. The Cuban will face the resistance of productions of Aterciopelados, of Colombia, the Argentine Dante Spinetta, the Spaniards of Vetusta Morla and the Mexican band Zoé.

The drummer Dafnis Prieto, with an important musical and teaching career in the United States, competes with his Big Band (Back to the Sunset-Dafnison Music) for the Best Latin / Jazz Jazz album in front of jazz bands from Argentina, Brazil and Puerto Rico.

Meanwhile, the award-winning guitarist and composer Yalil Guerra – winner of a Latin Grammy in 2012 – aspires to the best work / contemporary classical composition for “String Quartet No. 3 (In Memoriam Ludvvig Van Beethoven)”, performed by La Catrina String Quartet in his compact soul with brio.

The note of distinction for Cuban music will be the award of the Musical Excellence Award of the Latin Academy to pianist Chucho Valdés at the Four Seasons hotel in Las Vegas on November 13, two days before the 19th edition of the Latin Grammy.

The award is given to artists “who have made unprecedented contributions of extraordinary artistic significance to Latin music and the Latino community” and along with the Cuban will be received by the Brazilian Erasmo Carlos, the Spanish Dyango, the Puerto Rican Andy Montañez, the Mexicans Yuri and José María Napoleón and the Dominican Wilfrido Vargas.

Los artistas cubanos han vuelto a ser noticia, al darse a conocer este jueves los nominados a los Latin Grammy 2018, cuya premiación será el 15 de noviembre en Las Vegas. Músicos residentes dentro y fuera de Cuba serán contendientes en varias categorías, aunque ninguno clasificó en los apartados más significativos y mediáticos, como Álbum, Grabación y Canción de Año, informó la Academia de los Premios Grammy.

La llamada Música Tropical acaparó el mayor número de aspirantes cubanos al gramófono dorado. Omara Portuondo y el Septeto Santiaguero parten a priori con buenas opciones en la categoría de Mejor álbum tropical tradicional.

La diva del Buena Vista Social Club tendrá en el disco Omara siempre, de la Egrem –y ya reconocido con un Premio Especial Cubadisco 2018–, su presumible carta de triunfo, mientras el Septeto buscará su segundo Latin Grammy con A mí qué. Tributo a los clásicos cubanos (Los Canarios Music), en el que comparte protagonismo con el dominicano José Alberto “El Canario”.

La cubana enfrentará la resistencia de producciones de Aterciopelados, de Colombia, el argentino Dante Spinetta, los españoles de Vetusta Morla y la banda mexicana Zoé.
