La reciente reactivación de la Ley Helms-Burton por parte del gobierno de Donald Trump ha sido calificada por el diario español El País como un golpe calculado contra Cuba y la Unión Europea.
“Estamos ante un caso de abuso político de la ley y un paso más en la guerra fría comercial que caracteriza su mandato (el de Trump)”, asegura el periódico español.
Según el editorial, la nueva medida del presidente republicano, que abre la puerta a demandas en cortes norteamericanas contra empresas extranjeras, es “un nuevo gesto de agresión comercial” que combina “el proteccionismo reaccionario con el nacionalismo económico más rancio”.
La activación del Título III de la citada ley podría afectar a Europa y sobre todo a España, que tiene en la Isla 270 empresas, con una mayor presencia de las del sector hotelero. Casi una veintena de hoteles españoles de las cadenas Iberostar, Meliá y H10 podrían verse envueltas en una maraña de pleitos judiciales que hagan peligrar su estabilidad en los negocios con Cuba.
El País recuerda que las nuevas sanciones estadounidenses se implantan justo cuando el Consejo de Ministros de la Unión Europea acaba de aceptar la apertura de negociaciones comerciales con Estados Unidos.
“Pero esta es la táctica preferida de Trump: golpear y presionar antes de iniciar una negociación”, sostiene el rotativo.
La Unión Europea ya ratificó que está “preparada” para proteger los intereses de las empresas y ciudadanos europeos que puedan verse perjudicados por la política de Estados Unidos contra Cuba, según una declaración del portavoz de la Comisión Europea, Alexander Winterstein.
Aunque no se conoce aún que actitud tomará el grupo, algunos, como el embajador español en Cuba, Juan Fernández Trigo, consideran que lo más probable es que lleve a Estados Unidos ante la Organización Mundial del Comercio.
