Compositor y pianista cubano, asentado en México desde la década del cuarenta, la historia del Maestro Tarraza es también la historia de los inicios y auge del bolero como forma musical en América Latina.

Nace el 6 de octubre de 1917 en Caibarién antigua provincia de Las Villas. Fallece el 23 de mayo de 2001 En su ciudad natal estudió trompeta y después piano. A principios de la década del 40 se trasladó para La Habana, y aquí trabajó como pianista en varios clubes nocturnos; además, fue director de la orquesta Piedra, que acompañaba a los que se presentaban en la Corte Suprema del Arte, que se trasmitía por el Circuito CMQ.

Hacia 1943 marcha a México, donde se une como pianista acompañante a la cantante mexicana María Antonia Peregrino (Toña la Negra), con la que recorre otros países de América Latina y España, y desde este último país regresó a Cuba.

En 1945 volvió a México, entre 1952 y 1957, integró un dúo de piano con Felo Bergaza, con el que viajó por casi todo el mundo, hasta que en 1958 se instaló definitivamente en México. Fue pianista acompañante de María Victoria y Amparo Montes.
