La muy popular frase “Vivir como Carmelina”, nació en la ciudad matancera de Cárdenas, en el extremo occidental cubano, y se atribuye a la nieta mimada de José Arechabala Aldama, natural de Vizcaya, España, propietario de un poderoso emporio industrial y acreedor de una de las fortunas más grandes de la isla. El refrán conocido en toda Cuba, está relacionadas con la vida holgada y opulenta de la joven, que organizaba grandiosas fiesta y disfrutaba a sus anchas con un mundo de riquezas a sus pies, gracias al prospero negocio de su abuelo, dedicado desde 1878 a la producción de aguardiente y ron.

Los Arechabala, disponían además de una terminal marítima de embarque con una funcional red de transporte ferroviario, cabotaje y astilleros, así como refinería de azúcar y plantas de petróleo, mieles y siropes y como el negocio daba hasta para hacer dulces, también tenían una fábrica de confituras.

Asi no digo yo si la consentida Carmelina y todo el conglomerado familiar, gosaban la papeleta, al decir de los cardenenses, consultados al respecto, que aseguran que la muchacha era algo así como una princesa envuelta en trajes de seda, en ir venir por las calles; de la casa señorial a otra solariega en las afueras de la ciudad.

Ella era el símbolo de la abundancia y su forma de vida, el sueño del ciudadano común de las décadas del 40 y el 50, pobre y desposeído, pero no todos coinciden en presentar a Carmelina como una mujer banal y frívola, presta a los placeres terrenales y ajena a las penurias y calamidades de los pobres.

En el balneario de Varadero un sobrino nieto de Javier Marques Arechabala, asegura que el origen de la frase “nada tiene que ver Carmela con el origen del refrán”, suelta como un jarro de agua fría una fuente autorizada. “No, yo le digo que no”, niega categóricamente una vieja amiga de Carmelina que prefiere el anonimato. “Ponle el cuño, ella no es la del refrán.” Aunque esta señora insiste en mantener su nombre en la sombra, saca a la luz las cualidades de la joven Arechabala con una nitidez asombrosa y envidiable. La recuerda amable, dulce, bonita… y muy generosa.

Lo cierto es que la voz “Vivir como Carmelina”, con identidad y origen cuestionables, forma parte del rico refranero popular cubano, indisolublemente ligado a nuestras costumbres, tradiciones y herencia cultural.
