There’s a new girl on the block and she’s got the talent, skills, and looks to be a strong contender for the Latina queen of hip-hop in 2011. Danay Suárez was discovered barely two years ago by British DJ and world-music eminence Gilles Peterson while recording his compilation Havana Cultura in Cuba, for which many other local rappers participated. But Danay really stood out, not only could she rap with perfect flow and compelling, conscious lyrics, but she could also sing (jazz, soul, reggae, blues, you name it).
Danay, 24, was born in Havana’s Cerro district. When her parents separated she moved with her mother to Santa Fe on the outskirts of the city. “In our building in Cerro we had to run up the stairs before bits of the roof would fall on us,” she recalls.
Now Danay lives with a younger brother and their mother, whose ceramic art decorates the patio outside. Her aunt Isabelle is responsible for the sculpture that sits on top of the house — an enormous toilet bowl gaily painted with a floral motif, which can be seen from miles around.
One day, Danay gathered together a lot of her demo recordings and went to see Cuban fusion superstar X Alfonso. “He was the only person In Cuba who I thought would understand what I wanted to do,” she explains. “I didn’t think twice. I just went to his house and said, ‘You don’t know me, here’s my music, listen to it. If you need a backup singer, give me a call.’ A few days later he asked me to work with him, and I haven’t stopped.”
What lies ahead for her? “Of course I’d love to have a jazz group,” she says. “I’d love to have a studio with professional engineers behind the mixing board. But until that happens, I’ll continue making my music in the street, rapping, even if I’m not signed by a big record company. The most important thing is for people to hear my music, which is not only about my life but also maybe about the lives of millions of Cubans. That’s what I’m doing.”

Hay una chica nueva en el bloque y ella tiene el talento, las habilidades, y que parece ser un fuerte contendiente para la reina latina del hip-hop en 2011. Danay Suárez fue descubierto apenas hace dos años por el británico DJ y el mundo de la música eminencia Gilles Peterson durante la grabación de su compilación Havana Cultura en Cuba, por lo que muchos otros raperos locales participaron. Pero Danay realmente se destacó, no sólo pudo rap con un perfecto flujo y letras convincentes, conscientes, pero también podía cantar (jazz, soul, reggae, blues, lo que sea).
Danay, de 24 años, nació en el Cerro de La Habana distrito. Cuando sus padres se separaron se mudó con su madre a Santa Fe, en las afueras de la ciudad. “En nuestro edificio en Cerro tuvimos que subir las escaleras antes de bits del techo cayera sobre nosotros”, recuerda.
Ahora vive Danay con un hermano menor y su madre, cuyo arte cerámica decora el patio exterior. Su tía Isabelle es responsable de la escultura que se encuentra en la parte superior de la casa – una taza enorme alegremente pintado con motivos florales, que puede verse desde kilómetros a la redonda.
Un día, Danay reunido una gran cantidad de grabaciones de sus demos y fue a ver a la superestrella de fusión cubano X Alfonso. “Él era la única persona en Cuba que pensé que entender lo que quería hacer”, explica. “No lo pensé dos veces. Acabo de ir a su casa y le dijo: “Tú no me conoces, aquí está mi música, escucharla. Si usted necesita un corista, dame una llamada. “Unos días después me pidió que trabajara con él, y no he parado.”
Lo que viene para ella? “Por supuesto que me encantaría tener un grupo de jazz”, dice ella. “Me encantaría tener un estudio con ingenieros profesionales detrás de la mesa de mezclas. Pero hasta que eso ocurra, voy a seguir haciendo mi música en la calle, rap, incluso si no estoy firmado por una compañía discográfica grande. Lo más importante es que la gente escuche mi música, que no es sólo acerca de mi vida, pero tal vez también sobre la vida de millones de cubanos. Eso es lo que estoy haciendo. ”
