Alexis Sirkia es el quinto de los 14 hijos de un empresario joyero de origen finlandés que se estableció durante eños en Andorra.
LA FAMILIA QUE SUFRAGA la presencia de los médicos cubanos en Andorra no quiere hacer publicidad de su donación, según fuentes de la prensa local. Lo que se publicita ya no es caridad, es negocio, afirman fuentes del entorno de Alexis Sirkia, un empresario dedicado al negocio de blockchain y las criptomonedas y el hombre detrás de la financiación de la brigada.
Según Altaveu, Sirkia contactó con el Gobierno andorrano para ofrecerle cubrir los gastos del convenio médico con Cuba siempre que fueran asumibles. El contenido e importe del acuerdo se desconoce, a pesar de que 14ymedio lo ha solicitado al Ministerio de Sanidad del Principado. Después de que el empresario aceptó el presupuesto, técnicos financieros de la administración tuvieron que evaluar la propuesta para dictaminar que cumplía la ley y no implicaba blanqueo de dinero.
El donante es uno de los 14 hijos de Arnold Sirkia, un empresario finlandés que hizo su fortuna con la adquisición de piedras preciosas en Tailandia, donde ahora vive Alexis. La familia se estableció durante varios años en Andorra, donde tenía una joyería en la principal vía comercial de la capital, la avenida Meritxell y también abrió otros establecimientos similares en Málaga, Marbella y Hawai.
Estos lazos con el Principado europeo son los que han empujado, aparentemente, a Alexis Sirkia a hacer la donación, aunque no hay explicación pública a que se ciña exclusivamente a la cooperación cubana.

Aunque los hijos del patriarca viven repartidos por varios países del mundo, todos mantienen vínculos con Andorra, de hecho una de las hijas, Rita, fue candidata en 2015 por el Partido Socialdemócrata (actualmente en la oposición) por la parroquia de Encamp. Estos lazos con el Principado europeo son los que han empujado, aparentemente, a Alexis Sirkia a hacer la donación, aunque no hay explicación pública a que se ciña exclusivamente a la cooperación cubana y no al fondo solidario al que empresas, asociaciones y personas individuales han aportado ya casi dos millones de euros para enfrentar la crisis del covid-19, que ha hecho estragos en el pequeño Principado (menos de 80.000 habitantes) con 717 contagiados, 37 muertos y 248 curados.
Además de la fortuna heredada, Alexis Sirkia tiene sus propios negocios. Es cofundador de la firma GSR, que ofrece servicios de creación de mercados por intercambio de criptomonedas y de yellow.com, que ofrece asesoramiento e inversiones para implantar proyectos de blockchain.
39 sanitarios cubanos trabajan en Andorra desde hace pocos días. Aunque llegaron al país el 23 de marzo, tuvieron que pasar una cuarentena al dar positivo en covid-19 uno de los médicos. Todos ellos están alojados en un hotel de la ciudad de Escaldes-Engordany (anexa a Andorra La Vieja) y desempeñan sus labores en El Cedre, un centro sociosanitario habilitado como refuerzo para enfermos más leves de coronavirus, permaneciendo los graves en el hospital de Nostra Senyora de Meritxell, donde trabajan sanitarios andorranos.
El único importe conocido de los gastos ocasionados por la brigada cubana es el vuelo de ida y vuelta entre La Habana y Madrid, concedido a la aerolínea española Iberia, por un importe de 19.811,60 euros, tal y como publicó el Boletín Oficial del Principado de Andorra (BOPA) el pasado 15 de abril.
