Polémico, contradictorio, controvertido, el tema del arbitraje es inseparable aliado de la mayoría de las discusiones beisboleras en cualquier lugar del planeta donde se practique este deporte.
Tarea nada fácil la de los árbitros, encargados de impartir justicia en el terreno, esos hombres que cuando actúan con acierto nadie los aplaude, nadie los aclama y poco se habla de ellos, pero cuando se equivocan reciben la rechifla y en ocasiones hasta el insulto de la mayoría de los fanáticos y se convierten en los mal mirados del juego de pelota.
Pero esta vez no haré más consideraciones al respecto, solo comentarles que dos compatriotas nuestros ponen bien el alto el nombre de Cuba como “ampayas” en el mejor béisbol del mundo, me refiero al villaclareño Lázaro Díaz y el habanero Ángel Hernández.
Gracias a la colaboración del buen amigo Pablo López Gómez, uno de los árbitros cubanos con gran futuro en los Estados Unidos, no porque lo diga yo, sino por referencias alentadoras acerca de su trabajo, supe que Lázaro es uno de los tres latinos que están fijos en las Mayores, además de Ángel y el mexicano Alfonso Márquez.
Según Pablo, quien también trabajó en estas funciones en las series nacionales de la Isla, Lázaro lo ha ayudado muchísimo en esta difícil labor con consejos y orientaciones que han sido para él de gran ayuda.
“Que no se extrañe nadie si en la mismísima Serie Mundial que discuten Gigantes de San Francisco y Tigres de Detroit aparezca Lázaro en uno de estos grupos”, agregó Pablo.
Por su parte, Angel Hernández, quien reside en la ciudad floridana de West Palm Beach, tuvo participación activa en el reciente duelo entre los Tigres de Detroit y los Yanquis de Nueva York por la discusión de la supremacía de la Liga Americana.
En una entrevista que se le hiciera a Lázaro tiempo atrás, este afirmó que la disciplina juega un gran rol en el desempeño de un umpire porque la afición algunas veces grita, dice cosas y por ello hay que tener la cabeza bien asentada, pues de no ser así eso podría llevar al árbitro a reacciones diferentes.
Sobre su etapa como jugador, cuando actuó en Ligas Menores con la organización de los Mellizos de Minessota, dijo que eso le favoreció, pues en estos momentos a la hora de impartir justicia sobre el terreno, conoce cómo puede reaccionar un pelotero, más a sabiendas de que él fue “bien malcriado” cuando era atleta.
Según Lázaro, se considera un juego bueno para el “ampaya” aquel en el que ellos no son mencionados cuando este concluye, pues como mismo apunté en el inicio de este trabajo, nadie los congratula cuando hacen su trabajo en excelente forma.
Tanto para Lázaro, como para Ángel y el mexicano Márquez, nuestro reconicimiento y admiración en estas funciones. Exitos para estos tres hombres…, para todos los árbitros en general, porque sin ellos se haría imposible jugar a la pelota.
