Impassive in the face of the health crisis and the collapse of international tourism, the Cuban military consortium Gaviota is already preparing to open a new hotel with a shopping center in Havana with the participation of the large chain of Indian origin, based in Portugal, MGM Muthu Hotels. According to the corporate general director of the brand in Cuba, Rafael López, the Gran Muthu Habana is the main project, located on 3rd and 70th streets in Havana, but it will not be the only one.
MGM Group of Companies (abbreviation M. G. Muthu Group) is a diversified conglomerate group of companies based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, with interests in logistics, distilleries, hospitality, theme parks, and commerce.
MGM Muthu Hotels is one of the leading leisure groups in Europe with Resorts in Algarve, Malaga, Almería, Tenerife, and the United Kingdom, with new additions in India and Singapore, as well as the most recent acquisition of the Hôtel des Ambassadeurs in Lourdes, France and recently expanded to Cuba.
Cuba is the first and only tourist destination where the chain has been present in the Caribbean for almost three years. On the island, this firm adds hotels in the Jardines del Rey Archipelago, Ciego de Ávila — Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo; Grand Muthu Imperial; and Grand Muthu Rainbow Hotel—; Varadero —Hotel Muthu Playa Varadero—; and Havana —Grand Muthu Plaza and Grand Muthu Habana and now with its new Grand Muthu Almirante Beach in the Guardalavaca resort, Holguin.
The official Cuban press announced that this new hotel will be inaugurated on July 1. The five-star hotel, which will be managed by the state-owned Grupo Cubanacan, has a capacity of 514 rooms and is just one part of the company’s expansion on the island.
“With this new facility we add the seventh property in Cuba, demonstrating our commitment to the destination,” Rafael López, general director of Muthu Hotels MGM Cuba, told the specialized publication Hosteltur in March.
Gran Muthu Almirante Beach will operate under the All-inclusive modality, focusing on leisure, sun, and beach tourism, although it will also offer facilities for the celebration of weddings and other events.
Among the projects under development of Muthu Hotels is another tourist center in Holguín, to be located in the Yuraguanal area, with around 480 rooms, as well as a large hotel at the intersection of 3rd and 70th, in Playa, Havana, adjacent to the National Aquarium.
This latest facility, which is being built in conjunction with Grupo Gaviota, belonging to the business conglomerate of the military GAESA, will include a shopping center within its various services, reported the state Cuban News Agency.
The MGM Muthu Hotels chain, which is around a decade old, has around 54 hotels around the world, including facilities in France, England, Spain, and Scotland.
The construction of new hotels has not stopped in Cuba even in the midst of the worst moments of the Covid-19 pandemic. This, while the Government insists that it lacks the financial resources to buy food and medicine, among other basic necessities that are scarce on the island.

La prensa oficial cubana anunció que el próximo 1 de julio quedará este nuevo hotel inaugurado. El hotel, de categoría cinco estrellas y que será administrado con el estatal Grupo Cubanacan, tiene una capacidad de 514 habitaciones y es apenas una parte de la expansión de la empresa en la Isla.
“Con esta nueva instalación sumamos la séptima propiedad en Cuba, demostrando nuestra apuesta por el destino”, dijo en marzo a la publicación especializada Hosteltur el director general de Muthu Hotels MGM Cuba, Rafael López.
Gran Muthu Almirante Beach operará bajo la modalidad Todo incluido, enfocándose en turismo de ocio, sol y playa, aunque también ofrecerá facilidades para la celebración de bodas y otros eventos.
Entre los proyectos en desarrollo de Muthu Hotels está otro centro turístico en Holguín, a ubicarse en la zona de Yuraguanal, con alrededor de 480 habitaciones, así como un hotel de grandes dimensiones en la intersección de 3ra y 70, en Playa, La Habana, aledaño al Acuario Nacional.
Esta última instalación, que se construye de conjunto con el Grupo Gaviota, perteneciente al conglomerado empresarial de los militares GAESA, incluirá un centro comercial dentro de sus variados servicios, reportó la estatal Agencia Cubana de Noticias.
La cadena MGM Muthu Hotels, con alrededor de una década de fundada, cuenta con alrededor de 54 hoteles en todo el mundo, que incluyen instalaciones en Francia, Inglaterra, España y Escocia.
La construcción de nuevos hoteles no se ha detenido en Cuba ni siquiera en medio de los peores momentos de la pandemia del Covid-19. Ello, mientras el Gobierno insiste en que carece de los recursos financieros para hacer compras de alimentos y medicamentos, entre otros productos de primera necesidad que escasean en la Isla.
