HISTORIA DE NUESTRO SON CUBANO
En esta isla de tanta sabrosura que cuenta con variados géneros musicales, sin duda, el son marca un antes y un después en la música cubana. El camino del son cubano comienza por el siglo XIX. De acuerdo a los conocedores de la historia musical, es un ritmo que nace de la mezcla de la música bantú africana y de la música española.

El son mezcla los sonidos de instrumentos de cuerdas como la guitarra y el tres cubano, con instrumentos de percusión como las maracas, el bongó, el bajo y las claves.
Este ritmo musical se tuvo que abrir paso dentro de los prejuicios de la época, pues era considerado la música de las clases obreras y de los afrocubanos. Para casi ningún cubano es extraña la frase «¿de dónde son los cantantes?», que solemos responder con «son de la loma y cantan en llano». Estos versos forman parte de uno de los sones cubanos más famosos y célebres del increíble Trío Matamoros formado por Miguel Matamoros, Siro Rodríguez y Rafael Cueto.

Tres santiagueros que por azar del destino se unieron y lograron llevar el son cubano a muchos rincones del mundo y consiguieron con su música y sus canciones un aporte indudable a la música y cultura popular cubana, así como consagrarse como uno de los mejores grupos de son cubano.
Entre sus particularidades estaba que la sonoridad de las dos voces e igual número de guitarras formaba un conjunto armónico que resultó diferente a las propuestas sonoras de otros grupos de la época. En las letras de las canciones del trío sentimos la cubanía, sobre todo esa ley de vida cubana: «reírnos de nuestros problemas» como se dice, nos reímos, pero echamos pa´lante.
El Trío Matamoros se convirtió en un fenómeno musical que aún perdura hasta nuestros días, pues es común oír tararear a alguien «la mujer de Antonio camina así» o «aunque tú me has dejado en el abandono». Ambos versos forman parte de sus canciones más famosas, la primera La mujer de Antonio y la otra Lágrimas Negras, que ha sido versionada por variados artistas de gran talla internacional. EL DUO LOS COMPADRES
Fue una agrupación originaria de Santiago de Cuba fundada por Lorenzo Hierrezuelo y Francisco Repilado. El primero era conocido como Compay Primo, por hacer la primera voz y el segundo Compay Segundo, ya que hacía la voz grave del dúo.
Su sonido se caracterizaba por la fina mezcla de voces y la manera particular de interpretación del son al estilo de los guajiros de Oriente. El dúo constituyó todo un fenómeno de popularidad dentro de los grupos de son cubano y llegando a presentarse tanto en Cuba como en República Dominicana, Panamá, Puerto Rico. Para el año 1953 Compay Segundo sería sustituido por Reynaldo Hierrezuelo, hermano de Lorenzo.
