The Malecón is a wide esplanade, causeway, and boardwalk that stretches 8 km (5 miles) along the coast in Havana, Cuba, from the mouth of the port of Havana in Old Havana, to the along the north, on the side of the Centro Habana neighborhood and the Vedado neighborhood, ending at the mouth of the Almendares River.
For Cubans, the Malecon in Havana is one of the most significant places in Havana, an attraction that for many years has been a favorite meeting place for Cubans. Practically anyone has traveled to Cuba, they have surely been on the famous Malecón Habanero.
Being an important part of our history, we decided today to bring you six aspects that you probably did not know about El Malecón.
1. AT FIRST IT WAS NOT CALLED MALECON
The first name of the road was “Avenida del Puerto”. It was also called “Avenida Golfo”. This was for the year 1819, when the “expansion of the outer walls” began, to meet the expansion needs of the city. This was a coastal area that connected the entrance to the Bay of Havana with the Torreón de San Lázaro. By then it was a place of reefs, where Havana families went to take sea baths.
2. PRIORITY FOR COMMERCIAL USE
Francisco de Albear, one of the best Cuban engineers during the 19th century, had a complex work in mind, it was not a simple walk, although recreational use was important. A wide avenue with a height of four meters above sea level, separated from the shore and erected on a long succession of 250 vaults, would provide a channel for the expansion needs of Havana.
On one side of the resulting gallery, you could follow the railway line. Warehouses would be located there to serve the active port. It could also function as a military defense line. But the government did not provide the necessary funds and the Albear project was not carried out.
3. AVOID FLOODING
The meteorological systems of the northern Caribbean have always affected Havana. At the beginning of the last century, along the deteriorating highway of the capital’s coast, buildings were constantly affected by storms and even today the sectors to the north of the city are frequently flooded during the winter season. The Malecón had been made to help solve this problem.
4. THE NORTH AMERICANS BEGAN THEIR CONSTRUCTION
Civil engineers from the Navy and the US Army were the ones who jointly built the first two sections of the Malecón in Havana. The first section, from Paseo del Prado to Calle Crespo, was built between 1901 and 1902. The second section reaches the Monument to Maine and was completed in 1921.
5. THE MALECON OF HAVANA IS SURROUNDED BY ARCHITECTURAL TREASURES
Throughout the length of the Malecón promenade, you can see beautiful buildings built at the beginning of the 20th century. In addition, monuments have been built in the area dedicated to exalting the memory of the heroes of the Cuban Wars of Independence, such as Calixto García or the Bronze Titan, Antonio Maceo.
6. SOMETHING MORE THAN A PLACE OF ENTERTAINMENT
Before the COVID epidemic that has attacked Cuba with great force, and during the day, groups of fishermen could be seen in the place trying to make a living. Also, young people dive into the sea. At night the Malecón was full of life. It is a place where lovers met and teenagers spent time, listening to music. Many people sat on its walls or walked at all hours along the promenade. Unfortunately in recent years, due to the popularity of the place and the number of tourists it attracted, it had also become a place where prostitution moved, which in Cuba is practiced by the so-called “jineteras”.

El Malecón es una amplia explanada, calzada y malecón que se extiende a lo largo de 8 km (5 millas) a lo largo de la costa en La Habana, Cuba, desde la desembocadura del puerto de La Habana en La Habana Vieja, a lo largo del norte, del lado del barrio Centro Habana y del barrio Vedado, terminando en la desembocadura del río Almendares.
Para los cubanos el Malecon habanero es uno de los lugares más significativos de La Habana, un atractivo que por muchos años ha sido sitio de encuentro preferido por cubanos. Prácticamente cualquiera haya viajado a Cuba, de seguro ha estado en el famoso Malecón Habanero.
Siendo una parte importante de nuestra historia decidimos hoy traerte seis aspectos que probablemente no conocías sobre El Malecón.
1. AL PRINCIPIO NO SE LLAMABA MALECON
El primer nombre de la vía fue «Avenida del Puerto». También se le llamó «Avenida Golfo». Esto fue para el año de 1819, cuando se dio inicio al “ensanche de extramuros”, para solventar las necesidades de expansión de la ciudad. Este era espacio costero que conectaba la entrada de la Bahía de La Habana con el Torreón de San Lázaro. Para entonces se trataba de un lugar de arrecifes, a donde las familias habaneras se dirigían para a tomar baños de mar.
2. PRIORIDAD PARA EL USO COMERCIAL
Francisco de Albear, uno de los mejores ingenieros cubanos durante el siglo XIX, tenía en mente una obra compleja, no se trataba de un simple paseo, aunque el uso recreativo era importante. Una amplia avenida con una altura de cuatro metros sobre el nivel del mar, separada de la orilla y erigida sobre una larga sucesión de 250 bóvedas, daría cauce a las necesidades de ampliación de La Habana.
A un lado de la galería resultante podría seguir la línea de ferrocarril. Allí se ubicarían almacenes, para dar servicio al activo puerto. También podría funcionar como línea defensiva militar. Pero el gobierno no aportó los fondos necesarios y el proyecto de Albear no se ejecutó.
3. EVITAR LAS INUNDACIONES
Los sistemas meteorológicos del norte del Caribe siempre han afectado a La Habana. A principios del siglo pasado, a lo largo de la deteriorada carretera de la costa capitalina, los edificios era constantemente afectados por las tormentas y aun hoy los sectores al norte de la ciudad se inundan frecuentemente durante la temporada de invierno. El Malecón se habia hecho para ayudar a solventar este problema.
4. LOS NORTEAMERICANOS COMENZARON SU CONSTRUCCION
Los ingenieros civiles de la Marina de Guerra y el ejército estadounidense fueron los que construyeron conjuntamente los dos primeros tramos del Malecón de La Habana. El primer tramo, desde el Paseo del Prado hasta la Calle Crespo, se construyó entre 1901 y 1902. El segundo tramo llega hasta el Monumento al Maine y se terminó en 1921.
5. EL MALECON DE LA HABANA ESTA RODEADO DE TESOROS ARQUITECTÓNICOS
A todo lo largo de la extensión del paseo del Malecón se pueden observar hermosos edificios construidos a principios del siglo XX. Además, se han edificado en la zona monumentos dedicados a exaltar la memoria de los próceres de las Guerras de Independencia de Cuba, como es el caso de Calixto García o el Titán de Bronce, Antonio Maceo.
6. ALGO MAS QUE UN LUGAR DE ENTRETENIMIENTO
Antes de la epidemia del COVID que ha atacado a Cuba con gran fuerza, y durante el día, se podia ver en el lugar a grupos de pescadores intentando ganarse la vida. También a jovencitos que se dedican a zambullirse en el mar. Por las noches el Malecón se llenaba de vida. Es un sitio donde los amantes se reúnian y los adolescentes pasaban tiempo, escuchando música. Mucha gente se sentaba en sus muros o caminaban a toda hora a lo largo del paseo. Lamentablemente en los últimos años, por la popularidad del lugar y la cantidad de turistas que atraian, también se habia convertido en un lugar donde se movia la prostitución que en Cuba es practacada por las llamadas “jineteras”.
