Polo Montañez, fue un cantante y compositor cubano nacido en Sierra del Rosario, Pinar del Rio, en una finca conocida como El Brujito. Su nombre completo era Fernando Borrego Linares.
Desde temprana edad tuvo varios trabajos, entre ellos conducir un tractor, ordeñar vacas, hacer carbón, ayudar en la granja familiar y como leñador. En su tiempo libre, Montañez iba cantando de casa en casa. Comenzó a cantar y tocar en fiestas locales y reuniones familiares con su padre. En esas reuniones, comenzó a tocar la tumbadora y la guitarra a los 7 años.
Los hombres y mujeres del campo han padecido tradicionalmente las burlas de quienes viven en las ciudades y cabeceras de provincia. Se les ha descalificado públicamente por su ingenuidad, desconocimiento o su manera de vestir y hablar. Hasta el punto que llamar guajiro a alguien ha sido durante mucho tiempo uno insulto en la Isla.
Sin embargo, a principios de este siglo un fenómeno musical salido de los campos cubanos comenzó a llegar a todos los rincones de la Isla, incluso a las zonas urbanas. Era el músico Fernando Borrego Linares, que sin nunca haber estudiado en una escuela de arte, comenzaba a dejar una huella indeleble en la cultura cubana.
Autor de más de un centenar de canciones, este hombre había perdido hasta las esperanzas de poder actuar con su grupo en los municipios de Candelaria, San Cristóbal o Pinar del Río. Por el solo hecho de ser guajiro, Polo Montañez vio durante años como a muchos funcionarios y burócratas de la cultura no les importaba lo que él cantaba.
CAMBIA LA SUERTE PARA EL “GUAJIRO DE VERDAD”.
Sin embargo, la suerte cambió un buen día del año 1996. El presidente de la disquera francesa Lusáfrica, José da Silva, visitó la comunidad Las Terrazas en Pinar del Río. Allí el autor de Un montón de estrellas cantó frente al importante ejecutivo con una vieja guitarra rusa, a la que se le rompió una cuerda mientras tocaba.
Polo Montañez fue fiel a su raíz campesina: vivió y murió siendo guajiro. Siempre se mostró orgulloso de ser quien era y del campo sacaba su inspiración. A partir de ese momento su vida sería otra. Así, se fue a triunfar primero en Colombia para ganarse el cariño de aquel pueblo, antes de poder vencer los prejuicios de su país y de los funcionarios del Ministerio de Cultura.
En el país sudamericano, obtuvo un disco de platino y se mantuvo por años en los primeros lugares de las preferencias. Una de sus canciones más populares fue Un montón de estrellas, que llegó a ser interpretada por el popular salsero Gilberto Santa Rosa. Unos años después, Marc Anthony incluiría en su disco 3.0 el tema Flor pálida del eterno campesino de las cuerdas y la guitarra.
Con la fama de Polo Montañez, la gente se fue adaptando a escuchar la palabra guajiro dicha en términos más amables, cariñosos. Su música sencilla y hermosa caló en el corazón de los cubanos y en especial de la gente del campo, porque fue fiel a su identidad campesina. La fama no lo cambió, sino que siguió siendo una persona llana, alegre y cordial. Contribuyó a que en los pequeños pueblos perdidos en la geografía nacional, muchos recuperaran el orgullo de ser campesinos.
Varios intérpretes cubanos le han cantado a los guajiros y numerosos autores han creado temas inspirados en la gente que está más cerca de la tierra, pero la mayoría de las veces sin ser ellos mismos parte del campo. Silvio Rodríguez tiene una bella canción titulada Guajirito soy y el grupo Sexto Sentido cuenta en su repertorio con excelentes temas sobre los agricultores, pero ninguno ha calado en el pueblo como lo hizo el compositor de Si se enamora de mí.
MUERTE DE POLO MONTAÑEZ
Polo Montañez fue fiel a su raíz campesina: vivió y murió siendo guajiro. Siempre se mostró orgulloso de ser quien era y del campo sacaba su inspiración, su modestia y sencillez. Lamentablemente, murió en 2002 a los 47 años, tras sufrir graves lesiones en un accidente automovilístico. Estaba en la mejor etapa de su vida y con su muerte perdimos a un defensor de la dignidad de los campesinos cubanos.

Polo Montañez, was a Cuban singer and songwriter born in Sierra del Rosario, Pinar del Rio, on a farm known as El Brujito. His full name was Fernando Borrego Linares.
From an early age, he had various jobs, including driving a tractor, milking cows, making charcoal, helping on the family farm, and as a lumberjack. In his spare time, Montañez would sing from house to house. He began singing and playing at local parties and family gatherings with his father. In those meetings, he began to play the tumbadora and the guitar at the age of 7.
The men and women of the countryside have traditionally suffered the ridicule of those who live in the cities and provincial capitals. They have been publicly disqualified for their naivety, ignorance, or the way they dress and speak. To the point that calling someone, a guajiro has long been an insult on the island.
However, at the beginning of this century, a musical phenomenon that came from the Cuban countryside began to reach every corner of the island, including urban areas. It was the musician Fernando Borrego Linares, who without ever having studied at an art school, was beginning to leave an indelible mark on Cuban culture.
Author of more than a hundred songs, this man had lost even hope of being able to perform with his group in the municipalities of Candelaria, San Cristóbal, or Pinar del Río. By the mere fact of being a guajiro, Polo Montañez saw for years how many civil servants and bureaucrats of culture did not care what he sang.
LUCK CHANGES FOR THE “GUAJIRO DE VERDAD”
However, luck turned one fine day in 1996. The president of the French record company Lusfrica, José da Silva, visited the Las Terrazas community in Pinar del Río. There the author of A bunch of stars sang in front of the important executive with an old Russian guitar, which broke a string while he played.
Polo Montañez was faithful to his peasant roots: he lived and died as a peasant. He was always proud of who he was and from the field, he drew inspiration from him. From that moment on, his life would be different. Thus, he went to triumph first in Colombia to win the affection of that people, before being able to overcome the prejudices of his country and of the officials of the Ministry of Culture.
In the South American country, he obtained a platinum record and remained in the first places of the preferences for years. One of his most popular songs was A Lot of Stars, which was performed by the popular salsa singer Gilberto Santa Rosa. With the fame of Polo Montañez, people gradually adapted to hearing the word guajiro spoken in kinder, more loving terms. His simple and beautiful music penetrated the hearts of Cubans and especially the people of the countryside because he was faithful to his peasant identity. Fame did not change him, but he remained a plain, cheerful and cordial person. He contributed to the fact that in the small towns lost in the national geography, many recovered the pride of being peasants.
Several Cuban interpreters have sung to the Guajiros and numerous authors have created themes inspired by the people who are closest to the land, but most of the time without being part of the field themselves. DEATH OF POLO MONTAÑEZ
Polo Montañez was faithful to his peasant roots: he lived and died as a peasant. He was always proud of who he was and from the field, he drew inspiration from him, modesty, and simplicity from him. Sadly, he died in 2002 at age 47, after sustaining serious injuries in a car accident. He was in the best stage of his life and with his death, we lost a defender of the dignity of the Cuban peasants.
