Olga Guillot nació en Santiago de Cuba el 9 de octubre de 1922, fue una cantante cubana conocida como la “reina del bolero”.
Hija de inmigrantes catalanes-judíos que se trasladaron a Cuba, su padre era sastre y su madre era costurera. Su familia se mudó a La Habana, Cuba cuando ella tenía cinco años. Cuando era adolescente, ella y su hermana, Ana Luisa, actuaban como el “Dúo Hermanitas Guillot”.
No fue hasta 1945 que se descubrió su talento como bolerista, cuando Facundo Rivero, un hombre influyente en la escena musical cubana de la época, la escuchó cantar por primera vez y la ayudó a debutar como cantante profesional en un famoso Club nocturno de la Habana. Poco después, Guillot conoció a Miguelito Valdés, quien la llevó a la ciudad de Nueva York, donde Guillot pudo grabar su primer disco con el sello Decca.

CARRERA ARTÍSTICA
Consiguió fama internacional por primera vez en los Estados Unidos con su versión en español de “Stormy Weather” en 1946.
Guillot viajó a México en 1948. Allí se consagró como cantante y actriz internacional, apareciendo en varias películas y realizando su segundo álbum. En México, Guillot comenzó a gozar de mucha popularidad por primera vez en su carrera.
En 1954, grabó su canción “Miénteme” (“Lie to Me”) del compositor mexicano Chamaco Domínguez, que se convirtió en un gran éxito en América Latina y le valió tres premios consecutivos en Cuba como la mejor cantante de Cuba.
1958 resultó ser un año importante para Guillot, ya que realizó una gira por Europa por primera vez, actuando en Italia, Francia, España y Alemania. Cantó junto a la legendaria Édith Piaf en un concierto celebrado en Cannes.
Olga Guillot mantuvo una casa en Cuba mientras viajaba por el mundo, junto con su casa en México. Pero Guillot se opuso al régimen de Fidel Castro, y en 1962 decidió dejar Cuba para siempre y establecerse en Venezuela. Poco tiempo después, dejó Venezuela, convirtiendo a México en su único país de residencia permanente.

Mientras tanto, siguió viajando por todo el mundo, cantando en lugares como Israel, Japón y Hong Kong. En 1963, Guillot recibió el premio Golden Palm como “mejor cantante de bolero de América Latina”. Recibió el premio en Hollywood, California. Guillot cantó en 1964 en el famoso Carnegie Hall de Nueva York, convirtiéndose en el primer artista latino en cantar allí. Durante su carrera, actuó junto a superestrellas de la música como Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan y su amiga cercana y exiliada cubana, la gran Celia Cruz.
Guillot continuó de gira durante los siguientes cuarenta años, lanzando más de cincuenta álbumes y ganando numerosos premios por sus logros en el mundo de la música. Era muy amiga de Celia Cruz, a quien a menudo se refería como “(su) hermana”. Cuando Cruz murió de cáncer, Guillot estaba muy afligida por la pérdida de su amigo cercano y compatriota. Fue madrina del cantante José José. Guillot vivía principalmente en México y tenía otra casa en Miami Beach, Florida.
MUERTE
El 12 de julio de 2010 murió de un infarto a los 87 años en la ciudad de Miami Beach. Le sobreviven una hija, Olga Maria Touzet-Guillot, nacida de su relación con el pianista y compositor René Touzet.

Olga Guillot was born in Santiago de Cuba on October 9, 1922, was a Cuban singer who was known as the “queen of bolero.”
Daughter of Catalan-Jewish immigrants who moved to Cuba, her father was a tailor and her mother was a seamstress. Her family moved to Havana, Cuba when she was five years old. As a teenager, she and her sister, Ana Luisa, performed as the “Duo Hermanitas Guillot.”
It wasn’t until 1945 that her talent as a bolero singer was discovered, when Facundo Rivero, an influential man in the Cuban music scene of the era, heard her sing for the first time and helped her make her professional singing debut at a famous Havana night club. Soon after, Guillot met Miguelito Valdés, who took her to New York City, where Guillot was able to record her first album with the Decca label.
ARTISTIC CAREER
She first achieved international fame in the United States with her version in Spanish of “Stormy Weather” in 1946.
Guillot traveled to Mexico in 1948. There, she established herself as an international singer and actress, appearing in various films and making her second album. In Mexico, Guillot began to enjoy much popularity for the first time in her career.

In 1954, she recorded her song “Miénteme” (“Lie to Me”) by the Mexican composer Chamaco Domínguez, and which became a huge hit across Latin America and earned her three consecutive awards back home in Cuba as Cuba’s best female singer.
1958 proved to be an important year for Guillot, as she toured Europe for the first time, performing in Italy, France, Spain, and Germany. She sang alongside the legendary Édith Piaf at a concert held in Cannes.
Olga Guillot kept a house in Cuba as she traveled around the world, along with her house in Mexico. She was the godmother of singer José José. Guillot lived mainly in Mexico and had another home in Miami Beach, Florida.
DEATH
On July 12, 2010, she died of a heart attack at the age of 87 in the city of Miami Beach. She is survived by one daughter, Olga Maria Touzet-Guillot, born from her relationship with pianist and composer, René Touzet.
