Con la salida del juvenil de Granma, suman seis abandonos en 45 días, varios de ellos vía República Dominicana. En 2020, medios oficiales destacaban a Rafael Álvarez como “una de las promesas en la Isla” luego de mantenerse como líder jonronero.
CUBA SE ESTA QUEDANDO SIN PELOTEROS. En 45 días seis atletas juveniles abandonaron la Isla en busca de una oportunidad en las Ligas Mayores de Béisbol de Estados Unidos (MLB). Este miércoles se confirmó la salida de Rafael Álvarez, quien ya se encuentra en República Dominicana.
El muchacho, de 16 años, “es uno de los talentos más avanzados de su categoría con el bate”, cuenta el periodista Francys Romero. En efecto, en 2020, medios oficiales lo destacaban como “una de las promesas en la Isla” luego de mantenerse como líder jonronero en el campeonato nacional en la categoría 15-16.
Álvarez, al igual que varios de los prospectos cubanos, ven limitada su continuidad en equipos de la Serie Nacional. “Fuera tienen mayores posibilidades y un mejor futuro como peloteros según su potencial”, dijo el agente cubano Carlos Pérez. “En Cuba siempre son los mismos, no hay crecimiento”.
El pelotero, originario de Granma, “posee velocidad, defensa y brazo, por lo que puede ser considerado un prospecto cercano a las cinco herramientas”, destacó Romero. “Entra en una etapa de preparación física antes de ser presentados ante scouts”.
Para el régimen, 2021 será el año de los abandonos. La salida de Rafael Álvarez se suma a la del prospecto Luis Jesús Quesada, quien con su huída, el pasado 19 de noviembre, apagó los festejos por el Día de la Cultura Física y el Deporte y el discurso oficial de “la esencia de una potencia deportiva mundial”, así como a Darlin Jiménez y Gustavo Urgellés. Los juveniles se encuentran en Colombia, donde se unieron al grupo de peloteros representados por el habanero Carlos Pérez y están a la espera de los evaluadores de talento.
La salida de Rafael Álvarez se suma a la del prospecto Luis Jesús Quesada, quien con su huída, el pasado 19 de noviembre, apagó los festejos por el Día de la Cultura Física y el Deporte.
La vía principal para la salida de los deportistas ha sido República Dominicana, y así lo hizo Luis Antonio Pérez Hemmings. Natural de Las Tunas, el jugador había sido incluido por la Comisión Nacional de Béisbol dentro del Programa de Desarrollo de Talentos, a pesar de los cual solo tuvo tres oportunidades dentro de la novena de los Leñadores.
“Con tan poco horizonte de oportunidad y reducidas posibilidades de remuneración económica, este talento de 19 años prefirió marcharse al municipio dominicano de Quisqueya”, comentó Romero.
Antes que Antonio Pérez, la salida de Cuba de Cristian de Jesús López, en octubre, cimbró aún más a la tropa del mánager Eriel Sánchez. El juvenil estaba dentro del listado de la preselección de los Primeros Juegos Panamericanos Junior que actualmente se desarrolla en Colombia. El bateador de 19 años realizó el proceso de alcanzar una residencia en tercer país, aplicar para ser agente libre y luego presentarse ante scouts y equipos de MLB.
La fuga masiva de los peloteros comenzó a finales de mayo, cuando el equipo que participaba en el Preolímpico de Béisbol en Florida registró tres bajas: el segunda base César Prieto, los lanzadores Lázaro Blanco y Andy Rodríguez, además del psicólogo del conjunto Jorge Sile Figueroa.
En septiembre, durante el Campeonato Mundial sub-23 el Gobierno cubano sufrió la mayor sangría en la historia del deporte con la fuga de 12 peloteros. Con estas deserciones quedan solo 12 atletas en la delegación de la Isla convocada para el evento.
Las autoridades insistieron en responsabilizar a EE UU del abandono de los peloteros. El Instituto Nacional de Deportes Educación Física y Recreación (Inder) acusó al bloqueo del acuerdo entre la Federación Cubana de Béisbol y la MLB, de estimular “el tráfico de atletas en defensa de intereses políticos”.
