Nacida en La Habana, María Laria se la considera como la pionera de todos los shows de entrevistas hispanos, así como una personalidad televisiva abrumadoramente popular con audiencias superiores a los cien millones de televidentes en EE. UU., Europa y América Latina.
Laria es periodista y presentadora de noticias, así como una consumada pianista de conciertos, con una Maestría en Música del Conservatorio de Nueva Inglaterra. Se ha desempeñado por igual tanto en la radio como en la televisión (WWFE La Poderosa, América TeVé y Telemundo, en Miami; Super Canal 33, en Los Ángeles, California, y RTVE, en España, con audiencia desde Madrid y toda Europa hasta Oriente Medio, Norte de África, EE. UU. y Latinoamérica.
María Josefa Laria Hernandez llegó a los Estados Unidos con su familia cuando tenia cinco años. Su virtuosismo como pianista le llevó en sus contactos iniciales con la televisión donde había sido invitada a varios programas y entrevistada, por lo que decidió estudiar periodismo en UCLA ampliando su experiencia profesional en los ámbitos de actuación y modelaje.

Fue a principios de los 80 que apareció en su vida el hombre con el que se casaría, Carlos Enrique Ceballos, quien la impulsó a que siguiera una carrera en televisión y con quien estuvo casada hasta la muerte de este en 2018.
CARRERA EN TELEVISION
En 1983 se convierte en la primera presentadora de lengua española de televisión por cable con “El Mundo del Espectáculo”, un programa de presentación de informes sobre las últimas películas, conciertos y grabaciones, así como entrevistar a estrellas y celebridades manteniéndose en el aire durante cinco años.
Pasa para KVEA- TV de Los Ángeles, para ser la presentadora de dos noticieros diarios y produciendo reportajes especiales por cuatro años en que conceptualiza la idea de producir y organizar un programa de entrevistas en español, siguiendo el formato de “Donahue”, “Oprah”, y otros. Así nace el 17 de abril de 1989 “Cara a Cara con María Laria “emitido en Los Ángeles, y pasando a nivel nacional por la cadena Telemundo a finales del mismo año convirtiéndose en un éxito internacional. Por lo que es la pionera de este tipo de show en el mercado hispano allanando el camino a las nuevas tendencias en la televisión de habla española en este país llegando a ser “María Laria Show”.
Fue la única presentadora y reportera de Telemundo en realizar especiales en Europa, como un especial Prime-time con Pacco Rabbane, en 1994 en París y en el Vaticano, Italia, con el Papa Juan Pablo II, en 1993. En septiembre de 1994 se mudó a España para lograr el primer show grabado en vivo en diferentes lugares del mundo transmitido simultáneamente en cuatro continentes y llamado “Sin Fronteras con María Laria” co-producción entre Radio Televisión Española y la más exitosa red de cable internacional para la mujer “joyas de televisión” donde también fue la pionera del formato ‘talkshow’ en toda Europa y medio oriente, y los países escandinavos.

Allí tuvo su línea de trajes de baño e impartía consejos nutricionales para estar en forma, pero saludable y bella interiormente. Ha recibido muchos premios entre ellos cuatro “Emmy”; 18 nominaciones al Emmy; varios “Premios ACE” otorgados por la Asociación de Críticos de Nueva York.
CARRERA COMO ACTRIZ
Como actriz durante los primeros meses del año 2000, aceptó su primer papel como un médico en la serie “Los médicos jóvenes de Chicago”. Co-protagonizó una película con Sonia Infante, haciendo el papel de psiquiatra en ‘A Family Secret’, distribuida por WorldFilm Magic, con premios en Sundance Film Festival 2004. En el 2010 filmó ‘Neuralgia’, de Magdiel Aspillaga, una pequeña parte como reportera. En el 2006 dio inicio a otro exitoso programa de TV en vivo “Arrebatados” por América TV que se mantuvo en el aire por muchos meses para pasar mas tarde a la estacion de television America TV donde continuó con su Show.
Ha recibido varios premios en El Salvador, México, España, Puerto Rico (Paoli) y la República Dominicana (Premio Kassandra), y el resto de Latinoamérica. Además dedica su tiempo libre a diversas organizaciones benéficas y organizaciones comunitarias, como la UDLA (Unión de Discapacitados Latinoamericanos), S.A.N.E., un programa del Departamento del Sheriff de Los Ángeles para evitar que los niños consuman drogas o unirse a pandillas; “Ahora”, que recauda fondos para la investigación del SIDA y proporciona ayuda a las personas con el virus VIH.; Easter Seals, y muchos otros.
Actualmente, está iniciando un nuevo proyecto con América TeVé bajo el patrocinio de CanoHealth. Se trata de “Tarde o temprano”, programa informativo con invitados en el que compartirá pantalla con las cantantes cubanas Malena Burke y Marisela Verena. Temas sociales, humanos y sobre la mujer son los principalmente tratados en este show, que sale cada domingo a partir de las 8 PM.
Al mismo tiempo se informa que Maria Laria junto al director de cine Orlando Jiménez Leal han creado la organización sin ánimos de lucro Cinequanon, Inc. Con sede en Miami, Florida, Cinequanon, Inc. es una firma especializada en la producción de películas, documentales, programas de televisión y libros, enfocados todos en la defensa y concientización de los derechos humanos en todas partes.
